The posters arguing Cotto has fought the best are completely right. Why does Cotto get crap for not taking any fight? He has fought more top 10 guys in their respective divisions than almost anyone in the sport.
This is a spot on post.
Martinez deserves a big fight. Cotto doesn't need to fight Martinez. That said, a win over Martinez would thrust Cotto into the HOF if he wasn't already going there. Martinez tweeted that he hoped Margarito wins because that fight is possible to make.
Re: Miguel Cotto on Sergio Martinez
This is an interesting triangle and a promoter's dream. two fighters regardless of what money is offered want a piece of the same fighter, Margarito. It's implied that he cheated after he was caught by Mosley's people and Cotto getting the worst of the deal deserves his chance at revenge. Enough about the money because he deserves it and so does Martinez if he fights Cotto after Cotto wins the fight with Margarito. That Is if things go the way they should. Margarito took a few beatings and Cotto got some licks in before those wraps got to him. This fight has two damaged fighters. Margarito has height and reach and that would make things difficult for Miguel. Cotto is a fighter and he knows the risks involved. Since that brutal KO his comeback has been spotty but remember his courage and how he became the champ and then think about how Margarito slipped after he was discovered as a cheat. If nothing else and Cotto makes this realization and anger takes it's form in a hunger to win, it may well be an interesting night for fans everywhere. Cotto has fought good, tough fighters and now deserves a payday and there's nothing wrong with that. I'd pay for that fight. Martinez is next in line if Margarito wins and like it or not, Cotto is a big threat still.
Re: Miguel Cotto on Sergio Martinez
I saw a close fight, before it ended, no matter how damaged Cotto's face looked. I believe the wraps were loaded. Cotto will knock Margarito out.

Part of me wants to see Marg finish what he started but then again I wouldnt mind seeing Cotto get revenge after the Mexican cheated in the 1st fight. Either way neither of these guys are going to go on and win any big fights.
They're all in it for the money. Name one figher who isn't.
Cotto has consistently fought elite competition, his resume is outstanding.
Ofcourse everyone is in it for the money but there are still afew old school fighters who want to fight the best. Martinez is the best. Cotto shouldnt make money his excuse.

That's true although I haven't been overly impressed with his selection of opponents as a junior middleweight considering how deep of a division it is.

Indeed. If you fight Manny Pacquiao then your not afraid of fighting any one.
I would like to see Martinez clean up the devision by fighting Felix Sterm and then leave the reasonably weak middleweight devision and move either up or down depending on who he wants to fight.
Go up a devision and fight Ward or Bute.
Go down a devision and fight Cotto, Angulo or Alvarez.
He could go down a devision and Mayweather of Pac go up a devision and meet half way if he really wants a challange.
Dont know if pac can go up any more devisions though. You can only put on so much weight before you start slowing down.
Re: Miguel Cotto on Sergio Martinez
He's smart in what he's doing. I don't see him beating Martinez. History and revenge sells with Maragrito and he and Martinez are going in different directions weight wise. Cotto vs Alvarez would be a nice scrap but Alvarez is not learning a whole lot in last couple I believe.

Well in his defense his first fight back after the Pacquiao loss and his first fight at 154 was against Foreman who was undefeated at the time and was coming off of his best performance against Santos, although he was a pillow puncher he had plenty of skill and many on here were picking him over Cotto. After the death of his father and the shoulder surgery well he took the rest of the year off and took on a gimme in Mayorga, but he did what he was supposed to which was hand out a one sided ass whooping and well finished him off in the 12th.
Now he's up against Margarito in the rematch, but yea i agree after he beats Margarito in the rematch (and i'm pretty damn sure he will break Margo's eye), he needs to step it up and fight Angulo and the rest of the big names at 154. IMO a Cotto/Alvarez fight would be huge and like i said in another thread he easily outboxes the kid even possibly stops him in the mid to late rounds.

We cant blame Martinez for doing so. He's not getting any younger, and his career is nearing retirement. He must have been planning to get 2 big money fights out there to secure his legacy and his pocket prior to retirement. He's the lineal champion now, but his fights barely sell. Unless he beats someone who can draw big crowds, he wont get any better than 5million.
I would admire him even more if he tries to fight Bute. =)
Re: Miguel Cotto on Sergio Martinez
There is NOOOOOO way Bob Arum would EVER feed Cotto to Martinez.
Re: Miguel Cotto on Sergio Martinez
I can't believe Cotto is getting flak from some people. The guy has fought everyone i can think of who was a top guy at the time. He deserves to cash out his last couple fights and head off into the sunset. I would like to see him fight Martinez, but more because there is no big fight for Martinez. I wouldn't mind seeing them fight after, that's if he beats Margs, this but won't be mad if it doesnt happen.

Why not? This could be one of the 2 best fights for Mayweather right now since we all can assume that JMM lose and Bradley is next for Pacman. Fighting Cotto, at 150, for a title and not to mention, at least 30million. Besides, MM can possible show how good his boxing skills compared to Pacman against Cotto. BTW, the other big fight for MM is against Khan. Can anyone else bring in that kind of money? Not Martinez!!! Although a Martinez fight will silence a lot of haters. A lot, NOT ALL!!!
