Re: BOXING trying the patience of its fans
Two bad PPV's in a row doesn't ruin boxing for me, or for most of you guys im assuming. It ruins it for the casual fan, and new fans that boxing is trying to gain. It gives the casual fans and the MMA fans something to poke fun at. We as hardcore fans know we always seem to see great fights on FNF, SHobox, and BAD etc. How many great fights did we see on FNF that no one outside the true boxing fans seen? For every bad PPV, there always seems to be great fights on the networks, but they don't get the recognition because the names are not there.

No prob, JT... point well taken. ;D
But look at last night's fight between Donaire and Narvaez, for instance. Through no fault of Donaire's, last night's fight was a major snoozefest. Narvaez showed up for one reason and one reason only.... to survive and to prove he could last 12 rounds with Donaire. Then he crawls back to the lighter division he came from, and keeps fighting in his native Argentina. But where does that leave the fans who were hoping for a good, entertaining fight? True to their nature (which I love), the New York fans started chanting in the last couple of rounds... "This is bullshit."
My only point is that this type of fight, along with the controversial endings of both the Mayweather-Ortiz and Hopkins-Dawson fights, do nothing to increase the fanbase of boxing. That's my only point. And as a longtime boxing fan myself, it makes me kind of sad.
Re: BOXING trying the patience of its fans
Floyd Mayweather - sucker punch
Hopkins - body slammed by a bum
Donaire - booed out of New York
Pacquiao - ???????

I would watch the repeats a week later. PPV is taking the piss in the US, the greed is killing the game, no other sport is treated like this.

Certainly, a lot of the blame goes to Narvaez. He was there to last 12 rounds and get a career-high paycheck. That's his right to fight conservatively and not try to win, but it's also the paying customers' right to boo the shit out of him.
However, it's also HBO's fault. When you agree to broadcast a fight where one guy is a 20-1 favorite, you can't act surprised when the fight sucks.
I think the NY crowd was relatively kind to him, TBH. I would've been a bit meaner.

I've seen almost all of them in the last few years, $$$$ spent = 0.00, anyone foolish enough to pay for these fights are part of the problem with boxing and mma.
No offense if this applies to anyone here
Re: BOXING trying the patience of its fans
Boxing has been around for a few thousand years as I may have mentioned in another thread and there was always something happening to give it a lift. The Greeks loved and so did the Romans so don't get your underpants in a knot it will survive this onslaught of pretenders and there are always real fighters in the ranks unless some promoters are trying to hold on to their lofty positions, the phony ones.
Re: BOXING trying the patience of its fans
The problem in boxing is that the fans who follow the sport are very passive when it comes to bad fights. Yes they can complain, but thats just it, we cant get anything -- any promise or assurance that the next fight will be thrilling and satisfying one. In MMA, its different, any moment people can see action -- and that keeps MMA alive. In boxing, if one wants to play defense and run along and survive the 12 rounds, he can ruin the entire fight. No action and just pure dancing. We can see this last time on Donaire-Narvaez fight, Clottey-pacman, many others.
Actually I cannot think of anything to solve that. A fighter can come on fight night, just try to survive and get his paycheck. We need fights that matters, compelling fights, the fight that will really tell who's the real deal in boxing. Let Donaire fight Arce, Pacman vs Floyd, Amir vs Bradley, Bute vs Ward, Pirog vs Martinez, Juanma vs Gamboa... Thats it. Stop doing garbage fights! Stop supporting them too. Dont watch the fight the doesnt really bring the real action we all deserve. Just read the news the next day and suit yourself on youtube replays than be fooled by Bob and Golden boy..
Re: BOXING trying the patience of its fans
Ive gotta put my 2c worth in here.
1... Floyd Mayweather just acted like the prima donna street punk we all know he is. Ref Joe Cortez should have been put out to grass years ago too
2... The WBC & Ring did the only honorable thing they could do and return the belts to Bernard Hopkins. Dawson BLATENTLY fouled Hopkins and really should have been DQ'd
Referee Pat Russell TOTALLY mishandled the situation.
1... He proclaimes there was no foul..... Bullcrap
2... He accuses Hopkins of faking injury.... Hopkins has a separated shoulder proven by MRI
3... He never ever asked Hopkins if he could continue. He just awarded a diabolical TKO win to Dawson.
Is Russell crooked or was he incompetant??? Who knows but by his actions he needs to be put out to grass along with Cortez, Richard Steele & Marlon B Wright. As an ex US Marine I would have thought Russell would have the decency to admit his faux pas & apologise to Bernard Hopkins
Ive been in and around boxing for 35 yrs & we always heard how corrupt boxing was in the 50's with the mob etc. If anything its just as corrupt today with extremely suspect officiating Ref's & judges, The alphabet org's. Plus certain boxing commissions are crooked as a corkscrew. BUT I still love the sport & will support it till I die;D

I was with you until you said Pirog vs Martinez;D Let's see Pirog face some stiffer competion before we throw him in with Martinez. Otherwise i agree, we need the fights that we have all been wanting to see.
