Was just about to post the same thing... there's probably a reason why this 'lost art' is gone and forgoten!... ???
Leather might be harder to 'cut and tear' than flesh... but we're talking about skin that has ruptured and cracked from swelling/blunt impacts... not been torn like paper of slashed with a knife.
