I don't see how Usher is a bad pick at all. Chances are there won't be much focus on Sugar Ray as a human character in the film, they just needed someone who looked close enough and can move well. His background is basically dancing/performing, I'd imagine he will be perfect for fight scenes.
De Niro plays the part of BHOF trainer Ray Arcel, for those of you who don't know much about Arcel, he was one of the greatest boxing trainers ever.
