At Carson, Calif. (Showtime): Antonio Tarver vs. Lateef Kayode, 12 rounds, cruiserweights; Winky Wright vs. Peter Quillin, 10 rounds, middleweights; Austin Trout vs. Delvin Rodriguez, 12 rounds, for Trout's WBA "regular" junior middleweight title; Leo Santa Cruz vs. Vusi Malinga, 12 rounds, for vacant IBF bantamweight title.
It will be interesting to see if Tarver can handle the much younger and hard hitting Kayode.
Who you kats got?
.
Tarver my friend. Tarver could look unbelievably old overnight. He should be able to get by kayode if he has anything left.
1-Kayode's power: not what you think. 14 kos out of 18 wins. He had UD in his first fight, then 14 KOs, and then 3 UDs against his 3 best opponents.
That says to me his power was against nobodies and journeymen. As soon as he started facing decent fighters (Iannuzi, Godfrey, and Cora Jr.) he didn't KO anyone.
2-Kayode can be outboxed. Iannuzi lost on all 3 scorecards. The scorecard that was 95-94 Kayode tells the story. Kayode was outboxed by a guy who is ok at best. Iannuzi used a jab and Kayode just followed him around alot. Didn't cut off the ring that well.
3-Tarver should just box at distance. If he keeps the jab coming and enough straight lefts, he'll have time to move (without running) and he can turn Kayode all night.
Kayode has to get to the body early and slow Tarver down. If he doesn't Tarver wins going away.
All this being said, I may end up looking like a dipshit, but that is why they fight the fights!!!! Look forward to it.
As for Winky vs Quillin. This is Winky's 3rd fight in 5 yrs. 5 yrs!! First fight in over 3 yrs. And he hasn't won a fight since December 2006. December 2006 was a lifetime ago.
Have to favor pretty heavily Quillin.
Have to give Trout the slight edge over Rodriguez.

No, sorry for the confusion. I was just sayin its as good or better than some PPV cards and its free on Showtime.
Showtime is doing a great thing this year. They are showing some fights that don't make the main program on Showtime Extreme.
So even an event on Showtime that has 2 fights, you will get a couple extra fights on Showtime Extreme.
Isn't that what fans want? More fights!!!! My biggest gripes as a fan: 1-Need more fights, 2-more evently matched fights (sick of guys who are top 3-5 in a division facing a guy who isn't a legit top 15 guy), 3-trinkets obsession- I could care less about the trinkets. For every time there is a unification fight where fans get to see 2 legit top 5 or so guys (if you look at unbiased rankings for the division), we have to sit through 10 mandatories (with most of them against guys who aren't that good-perfect opponents who have a decent enough record but we know are there to come, try hard, and then lose comfortably).

Yep Capt, Tarver 'should' be able to get by Kayode on experience alone, but Lateef is a young, strong kid who Freddie will have ready. I'm going with Kayode to outwork, out-muscle and put some hurt on Tarver on his way to a UD. ;)
I mean when you think about it, who the fuck is Tarver, he's 43 years old, and hasn't won a really meaningful fight in years.
As for the other 2 fights, i'd like to see Delvin get the nod over Trout. Quillin will likely outpoint Winky, but it won't be easy, getting by Wright is never easy. I'd love to see Winky school Quillin, who's a bit too cocky for his own good, it's one thing to talk the talk, but when you can't walk the walk, you look like a fool.
cheers

Dyah Davis ?
I like Bika a lot.
Maybe I'm off on the name, but he's the son of a what's his name, the famous Olympian boxer.
Yeah Howard Davis Jr.'s son. I believe his first name is Dyah tho I probably spelled it wrong. He's a nice kid and a pretty good boxer especially considering how late in life he picked up boxing.
He's gonna have his hands full with Bika. Wasn't too long ago Sakio took on Ward and really didn't do too bad considering the talent and tactics he was up against.

Re: Tarver vs. Lateef Kayode Saturday night fight thread
:action: This card starts @9:00 PM ET tonight, around 1:00 AM across the pond, a little earlier then usual because of all the fights. I just noticed that Tarver vs Kayode will be for the IBO cruiseweight trinket, wooohooo!

I'm guessing the undercard will start around 1:00 AM in the UK, but the main event likely won't begin until around 3:00 AM or after. If you're around closer to fight time, I'll try hooking you up with a stream.
cheers

Tam, Box Nation will repeat it for the next 3 years. You will get to see it. :)

Re: Tarver vs. Lateef Kayode Saturday night fight thread
Here we go, tonight's fights just starting on Showtime, a 4 fight card, Al Bernstein, and blithering idiot Gus Johnson calling the action, 1st up Leo Santa Cruz vs. Vusi Malinga, 12 rounds, for the vacant IBF bantamweight title.
Re: Tarver vs. Lateef Kayode Saturday night fight thread
Wright was pure quality but you know...I hope he gets whipped on here. He is-was just too damn good to waste so much of his later career. Just strolling in off 3 yrs layoff, preceded by 2 yr layoff. Its a shame man.
Bika really gave Davis a lesson in reality there!
