Unfortunately, Rigondeaux does have a fight scheduled and it's against another non-top-10 guy. He's really not doing a good job of building up his "Nonito's ducking me" argument. I do think he'd destroy Mares though -- one of the most overrated guys around.
I understand Anselmo Moreno is at 118 right now, but I view Moreno as a legitimate threat to any of the guys mentioned.
I agree completely. I would rank them Donaire - Moreno - Rigondeaux - Mares. I wouldn't view any outcomes among the first three as a huge upset. I think Mares is a clear class below.
Right. There is a reason that Mares didn't mention Moreno as a possible opponent after he won his last fight, even though they share the same promoter, and the fight would be easy to make. However, I actually am a fan of Mares. On that list though, he ranks below the rest.
With regard to the above list, Nishioka is a wild card too and should be somewhere on that list. I haven't seen quite enough of him to predict an upset in this fight, but he looks very good from what I have seen.
Rantcatrat, I don't know how I (and you too, I guess) missed this, but it looks like Moreno is moving up to 122 and making his debut there against Mares on Showtime on the same night as HBO puts on the Donaire-Nishioka fight: Mares-Moreno, Abril-Bogere, Russell, Olympians eyed for Oct. 13-14 | RingTV and HBO, Showtime fall dates to clash | RingTV
Edit: never mind -- just saw your post on this - should be great. I'm wondering what the odds will be -- this could be a good one to put money on Moreno.

In preparation for the Donaire-Nishioka fight this weekend, here is the video (translated) of Nishioka versus R. Marquez:

re: Donaire vs. Nishioka ( Saturday night fight thread)
This weekend we have ourselves a good night of fights. I'm most looking forward to the unification fight between Nonito Donaire and Toshiaki Nishioka.
Nishioka is Donaire's first fight against a southpaw at 122. He's also Donaire's size, maybe even naturally bigger. He's agile and pretty cute defensively. Nishioka might also match Donaire in speed, at the least, he's fast too.
Clearly, Donaire is no louch. Yet, at 122, against Vasquez Jr. and Mathebula, Donaire didn't appear invincible. His record in big fights can't be denied though.
What I like most about this fight is that you get a sense that these two skilled warriors fight on Saturday for legacy. It's not about money or fame for them. They wanted to fight the best to see where they stand. Call it naievete, fine, but that's how I see it. In any event, this fight has all the ingredients for a terrific boxing match that I'm very enthusiastic about.
re: Donaire vs. Nishioka ( Saturday night fight thread)
Agreed. This is one of the best cards of the year, IMO. The co-feature (Alvarado-Rios) will be a great fight to watch too -- less skill, more aggression. Can't wait!
re: Donaire vs. Nishioka ( Saturday night fight thread)
Looking forward for this fight this weekend. Donaire is facing his great assignment to date against Japan's Speed King Nishioka.
Who's your bet fight fans?
re: Donaire vs. Nishioka ( Saturday night fight thread)
Donaire/Rios. Can't wait for these fights.
re: Donaire vs. Nishioka ( Saturday night fight thread)
Am gutted that this does not seem to be on boxnation or Sky. Donaire / Nishioka could be a real classic and hopefully Rios gets battered though I can't see Alvarado being the one to do it.

Agreed on both counts. Alvarado has rice paper instead of skin and may start to bleed on the ring walk.
re: Donaire vs. Nishioka ( Saturday night fight thread)
A great weekend of action! Friday card on Showtime as well, minus the J Taylor fight thankfully. Donaire has looked a bit soft to me and really getting ahead of himself, with the loading up and the multiple division talk. If he approaches Nishioka the way he did Vazquez I think he's kept off rythem and losses. Good to see Rios admit the obvious and finally move up vs a live Alvarado. Wouldn't suprise me if he's near 150 + when the bell rings and I would love to see Mike whip him but don't think he has the backfoot and one punch pop to do it but it'll be fun stuff trying.
Re: Donaire vs. Nishioka on HBO Saturday night
:action: Some great fights on Saturday, Donaire vs. Nishioka and Alvarado vs. Rios
Oct. 13
At Carson, Calif. (HBO): Nonito Donaire vs. Toshiaki Nishioka, 12 rounds, for Donaire's WBO/IBF junior featherweight title; Mike Alvarado vs. Brandon Rios, 10 rounds, junior welterweights; Jose Benavidez Jr. vs. Pavel Miranda, 8 rounds, junior welterweights.
Why don't we use this as the fight thread. :beerchug:

Looking forward to this card
Re: Donaire vs. Nishioka ( Saturday night fight thread)
Anyone know if Alvarado - Rios and Donaire - Nishioka is being shown in the UK?
Re: Donaire vs. Nishioka ( Saturday night fight thread)
@GAME - just on boxingguru from what I gather.
Is anyone predicting a Nishioka win?
