Necessary? From a tradition that strictly forbids the making of idols? Who does the Pope look more like, the humble son of a carpenter whose disciples were simple fishermen or the pompous Pharasees and Money lenders he threw out of the temple?
The vatican's popes, cardinals look like they belong in a fucking circus, and seem to miss Christ's message don't they. It's more about worshipping/adoring them then it is god or Jesus.
They placed themselves in between man and God, taught that God is external instead of internal, they stole the founding movement went with a self made apostle Paul/saul (who never met Yeshua personally) and then they went out and killed all who practiced the older ways (so they thought).they killed so many innocents trying to wipe love out and replacing it with fear of God.
Assholes rewrote and omitted so much from the original texts over a long period during the council of Nicosia and decided that they are host to all on Earth, also what would be in and out of the NT.
That church is the Harlot draped in jewels and sin in the last book, worshiping the false image of god. Gold on the alter, pedophilia and other abuse against children, the most vulnerable of all.
I could go on with a list of what evil their leaders have done in the name of God but wont bore you.
Some Catholics are lovely people though and they do good things for others and will be safe from 2d.
Bankers' best guesses about the Vatican's wealth put it at $10 billion to $15 billion, but noone really knows for sure. Most of Vatican City's income, aside from donations from it's idiotic "flock", are "tax free" Italian stock-holdings that alone run to $1.6 billion. The Vatican also has big investments in banking, insurance, chemicals, steel, construction, real estate.
@Andre - I like the last sentence in this Quote by Mark Twain:
"A God who could make good children as easily a bad, yet preferred to make bad ones; who could have made every one of them happy, yet never made a single happy one; who made them prize their bitter life, yet stingily cut it short; who gave his angels eternal happiness unearned, yet required his other children to earn it; who gave is angels painless lives, yet cursed his other children with biting miseries and maladies of mind and body; who mouths justice, and invented hell -- mouths mercy, and invented hell -- mouths Golden Rules and forgiveness multiplied by seventy times seven, and invented hell; who mouths morals to other people, and has none himself; who frowns upon crimes, yet commits them all; who created man without invitation, then tries to shuffle the responsibility for man's acts upon man, instead of honorably placing it where it belongs, upon himself; and finally, with altogether divine obtuseness, invites his poor abused slave to worship him!"

Well Im not so keen on that verse he is somewhat misled by religion himself.
If he knew the real order of events and that the energies that formed us were not all by definitive design but were made in the balance (in a duality) with the total right to evolve into whatever you wish to via your free will, within the parameters of some certain lower dimensions where electrons form into dense matter, so that we (if we choose to decend our energies and warp ourselves into that material life further and become more denser and less enlightened at our own expense and that of our children and childrens children (because we in spirit demanded that right and got it). Then Mark Twain wouldnt of written that.

Actually this was an excerpt from one of Twain's books = The Mysterious Stranger, rather then a straight-up quote. It's just intended to a part of the story he wrote, if you get a chance read the whole book you might like it.
cheers

The prophecy of the Popes was the first thing that came to mind when I heard the Pope was stepping down. Not that I believe it...just thought it was interesting. I watched a show about Edgar Cayce on the History channel a while back. They mentioned St Malachy during the show.
Here's the show. At about 7:15
