In retrospect, there's no arguing with that line of thinking. At the time, we all marveled at Big George, and what he was able to accomplish at that age and after such a long layoff. But you're right... it opened the barn doors for all the HW retirees and their unfortunate comebacks.
It worked for George, and as much of a circus as it was its a testament to his game and preparation that he went as far as he did the second time around. The man totally reworked his approach physically and mentally. Unlike other bloaters hoping for the quick grab..George did it right..and smart. It wasn't just limited to hvys as we know. There's was no sadder sight that a great like Arguello coming back at that time and losing to a guy in pink satin trunks with a Fonzie hairdo.

George was just a physical freak, who somehow carried his immense strength until he was nearly 50. He was still built like an ox and could still take a true HW punch. Guys like him and Hopkins are just freaks of nature.
It's like every now and then you hear the story of someone successful who says "I had a great job, then one day I told my boss to fuck off, sold everything I owned and moved to New York/LA to try to be an actor/musician/artist/ect and now here I am a successful multi-millionaire and one of the top in my field." It's a great story and it gives people ridiculous hope, but you don't hear about the thousands and thousands of other people who did the same thing and ended up ruining their lives.

I remember reading in Lennox's book that Ruddock was a diva in the gym and he tried to remind Lennox that he use to beat him in sparring when they faced each other in the ring.
