In November 1982, I watched him sparring at Resorts International in Atlantic City, New Jersey -
just before he went away to New Jersey Camp for 'misguided people'.
He was 'small'. He was shorter than his Manager/Trainer - Lou Duva.
'El Torito' was no real Light-Middleweight. He was a 'pudgy' kid who looked like he needed to
lose about 12 lbs. of 'baby fat'.
Damn, older brother Sammy Ayala was a better talent, but he too had a bad streak with 'Mr. Brownstone'.
Never saw him live but on trade tapes some old fan wiser than I insisted on sending ;D Fierce as all hell but honestly didn't see some next coming that would hang with the top tier. He did well to get a second chance but seemed the same Ayala. He made his bed..now he sleeps.

You are forgetting about the Heroin addiction problem.
Sammy was the one that everyone talked about in San Antonio. The kid was a 'Star' as
an Amateur.
And Sammy was 'the one' who sparred with 'Pipino' Cuevas in 1977, and gave
a good account of himself.
