Who gives a shit whom invented a particular sport. If it was England we are grateful and not jealous, thank you mother England and we are sorry about that whole revolution thing. It got out of hand. I'm not doing a US vs Britain thing. The US has great talent across many sports. But don't run down Britain. To borrow from myself when comparing the UK to Canada...
Aside from Cricket, Rugby and Football as our 3 main sports Britain has....
Had more Formula One (the pinnacle of international motorsport) World Champions than any other nation in history. Current Champ too.
Dominate Cycling. Both on the track and, in recent years, on the road (won 3 of last 4 Tour De France).
Dominate Sailing - Top every Olympic Medal table for 3 or 4 Olympics in a row. And Ben Ainslie will be winning the Americas Cup in 2017.
Have dominated Triathlon.
3rd in last Olympic medal table. Behind the giants of US and China.
Had a couple of male Grand Slam Tennis wins in last couple of years.
Have a very good Athletics/Track & Field pedigree.
And that is just a few highlights from top of my head. And bear in mind the vast majority of our youngsters head towards Football, Cricket and Rugby. Football is a regular let-down and recurring national crisis, but in Cricket (despite us taking the piss out of ourselves) we have won 5 of the last 7 Ashes and for the last ten years have more often than not been ranked in the top 2 in the world. Rugby we are right up there. World Cup starts this month so we'll see.
So, I think it's fair to say that given our size, given our spread of sports, Great Britain does pretty damn well. In fact, you'd struggle to find a country that does as well across such a breadth of sports. I'd only think US really.
In the last few years alone Britain has had multiple golf major winners, tennis major winners, 3 TDF titles, 3rd in Olympic medal table, multiple F1 champs, multiple Ashes wins, Triathilon champs. Pretty much success in all of the major international sports. If only the damn football team could do something we'd finally be happy over here ;)
And this isn't anti U.S Lyle as you have many great athletes across multiple sports and fantastic systems in many, it's just pro-GB....and I just like to rant.

I thought it was an interesting post and would wonder what you think is the disadvantage of a lot of the non US fighters having to fight in different countries? I would say the majority of the time they fight away from home they are the "home fighter" in that they are the main attraction and the shows promoter fighter. For example all of GGGs fights in the US were run by his promoter. Pac v Mayweather Id have thought the majority of the crowd were cheering for Pac.

I think having a home base is much more advantageous to prepare for a fight than travelling all over the world.
Andre Ward would most likely beat Kessler, Froch and Abraham wherever they fought. But he's never been coerced out of his comfort zone.
Floyd-Pac - If that fight happened in the Philippines Pac would have probably won. Would it have been a robbery? Yeah. But Floyd has a loss. And again, he's never been in an other fighters backyard.

Well I will admit that Americans tend to be on the prideful and boastful side (which is one thing I hate about Americans and I am one). With that comes the idea that we don't have to go anywhere else because we are in THE PLACE for sports. We have our sports that we are good at and for those, you come here. It's like basketball. Everybody knows that the NBA is the best basketball league in the world by far. We are also big into American football which most other countries don't do.
With that said, most people aren't growing up thinking to themselves, "maybe one day I will get good enough at a sport and travel and live in England so that I can play there." But people from other countries say that about America. The world knows it so big events like boxing are held in America because most countries are connected to it.
