I do actually encourage eye contact when I teach presentation classes, but never with 12 year olds. Youngsters cannot help but look at my face when I talk to them anyway. This kid would be alright with me.

You need to teach him self esteem. Good eye contact is important for job interviews. Teach him right make him look you in the eyes.
