Floyd hasn't fought any I wanted since Mosely and hasn't fought anyone I wanted at the time he should have fought them since the Castillo rematch. Even now, his record breaking match isn't even against an a opponent who's at a disadvantages. (An Mma fighter who cant use his full arsenal, with pillow gloves, in a ring hes not used to.. some event;D) Ali fought Inoki in Tokyo (Scripted then unscripted and booed anyway), Mercer wore Boxing shoes into the octagon. If you want to fight an mma fighter in an exhibition, fine compromise the rules t fit both fighters. If you want to break a boxing record and it has to be in a boxing ring with boxing rules, choose a boxer. With all the talk from floyd that he could come back at 40 and beat Thurman's @$$... Now would be the perfect time to prove it... but who cares what happens to boxing, Floyd wants to get paid, take no risk and continue his glory on a technicality.
I won't watch this circus, the same as I haven't watched the berto fight... My time and money is reserved for actual fighters that have a warriors spirit, show heart, and chase greatness. And if you think that description fits Floyd.. to put things in perspective ... Consider that if Chavez Jr. had been able to finish off Martinez, he would have would have been 1 draw and 1 nc away from tying Marciano record by beating brian Vera almost 1.5 years before floyd... and been just as proud. ;)
I'm not saying that floyd hasn't accomplished anything in the ring... I'm just saying that him accomplishing something unequivocal maybe put his name in the record books, but it doesn't erase from peoples minds how he did it. If you want to be truly great, take no shorts. If money and technicalities are enough for you, then so be it but don't use boxing as a stage for your circus... as Spicoli said, Its a slap in the face to everyone whos doing this the right way. For every Kovalev willing to take no guaranteed money to regain former glory and avenge a rip off loss.. There's a group of money grubbing primadonnas who want to get paid to win and paid more to lose.. and people wonder why boxing isn't what it used to be.
People talk about the fight in here to make fun of it. Not exactly a ringing endorsement.
The U.S. elections generated a LOT of interest, and people can't stop talking about it either.
Does this translate into a big win for U.S. politics?
It's the Car Crash Syndrome. People will gather to ogle at anything and then move on. It's the sick aspect in many.
This is a good description of what normally describes the lopsidedness of match making, the fact that mismatches are heavy for favored fighters coming up or necessity and value of journeymen fighters. This however is simply a spectacle payout for two already established faces of their franchises that has no intention of leading anywhere. Show me any tilted scale of a bout where a boxer is brought in to lose and you will find in majority of cases at least 1,2 or a few times that b boxer side has pulled off the upset. Boxing has 1001 problems and is very much the black sheep of sports but this gimmick is essentially entering a supped up clown car in a car show. What will sell and promote this is not a few hardened overly cynical die hard fans calling crap crap but a mass media targeting casuals or status clingers who have no intention of watching the next boxing show on basic cable. I'm not a purist and do not begrudge a guy or gal making a buck but at the risk of sounding like a self righteous arse :-X, it's our house..our 3 legged adopted mutt of a sport and shouldn't just stand in line throwing our hands up waiting to eat at the trough of slop they shovel in for mass consumption.
I am not even sure I will watch it. It's not for any strap and is for all intents and purposes an exhibition bout. The casuals will lap it up and we will not give a monkeys, but I don't think it hurts boxing. Boxing is so much bigger than Floyd or UFC and it's not just about numbers. The fact that boxing goes on is the real legacy. It has to have room for stuff like this because it's got a lot of it in its DNA. I also like a laugh and there is plenty of room for entertainment in this. I get that the potential for an upset is miniscule but at this stage Floyd knocking anyone out is a bit of a change and the Irish fella just landing enough to make Floyd pause from admiring his own shorts is a small victory magnified.
Actually, I don't comment on the fight any longer and have no interest in the fight itself. It will likely be on TV free here. I won't watch it. I will likely stream the Cotto fight that won't be on TV instead. I'm not even joking. It's just a pointless fight. Only mugs will watch it.
