Re: Wilder-Ortiz set for March 3
Ignoring that Ortiz is an ancient, inactive drug cheat... technically/experience wise he's much better than anyone Wilder has faced.
He looked fine on his latest outing, nothing has changed, same southpaw jab/left hook, straight left hand/looping body shot. It all looks a bit repetitive, however, nobody looks good against spoilers like Allen and Scott, unless you blast them out, and Ortiz has typical Cuban syndrome, just fights to the level of his comp. He's floored/stopped everyone he's been in with.
Wilder can sparko anyone, for sure. But apart from an early punchers chance I don't see a lot more going for him. He needs to use his terrific athleticism to stop the geriatric from setting a comfortable plodding pace, however, that will leave his own mettle to be tested.
Re: Wilder-Ortiz set for March 3
We haven't seen Wilders chin tested yet. Maybe Ortiz is that man.
Re: Wilder-Ortiz set for March 3
Ortiz fits the mold for Wilder. He's a sitting duck shuffling in the middle of the ring looking for something to counter while Wilder circles on the outside dropping long one twos. The straight right is natural weapon against southpaws and noone has more range with it than wilder. Oritiz doesn't have fast feet, has bad head movement. In the past couple of fights, he hasn't really worked any angles that would allow him to close in on wilder, get within range and land his shots without being pulled in, smothered and leaned on. He's also not the big george type that will cross block his way through a firestorm and club you to death. Ortiz will probably look to parry the jab and loop one over the top and counter as an approach but will (like stiverne arreola and others) find himself about 4-6 inches short of the mark.
There is the odd chance ortiz lands at mid-range and maybe too his favor, Wilder has been filming too much reality tv and has slacked off, but I don't think so at this point. There's too many ways for wilder to win this cleanly and in the same sloppy fashion we've seen before. I see wilder windmilling and flailing his way through a walmart parking lot scrap in less than 6, maybe getting buzzed along the way....
Re: Wilder-Ortiz set for March 3
Ortiz was supposedly born in 1971.
Is this really the best opponent of today's heavyweights?!
Wilder is dreaming if he thinks he could take Tyson in his prime..
I expect Wilder to win within 4 rounds.

47? He looks old but not that old surely.
I can see why wilder is on odds on, he's faster, in his prime and has great power. He "should" be able to win this comfortably on points if he uses his jab and moves. We saw ortiz struggles to cut the ring off when he fought Malik Scott.
Despite this I'm actually going to put a few quid on Ortiz. The odds are tempting. He's the better schooled fighter in a toss up fight. Wilder hasn't perfected his technique and he leaves himself wide open but his level of comp haven't been able to exploit this. Ortiz can. He's a natural counterpuncher who has the longer reach and fight ending power. Jennings wasn't hurt by wvladimir but was regularly hurt by Ortiz before getting knocked out so that tells me Ortiz can hurt deontaywhen he catches him.
if luis Ortiz was in his prime he defo wins IMO only concern now is his age.

Being born in 1971 does not make you old :-\ ...well maybe if you are boxing ;D
Re: Wilder-Ortiz set for March 3
I was watching fox business news today and wilder was being interviewed by Stuart Varney. I didn't expect that one. Part of the interview was about reviving the heavyweight division and having these guys become household names again. Varney mentioned Wilder was getting 50 million for the fight, anyone know if that is the right figure? It sounds very high. Wilder stumbled over a few big words he tried to use but he seemed very pleasant. Say what you will Wilder is fun to watch. I'm going to miss the fight live as I'm working, this could be to quick of a fight to justify the night off. It is very good to see some movement in the HW division, hats off to Wlad but damn I was sick of him
Re: Wilder-Ortiz set for March 3
Is Ortiz still with Matchroom?
Re: Wilder-Ortiz set for March 3
I'm at the point with Wilder where I just want to see him hit hard square on the chin and shake it off. It's insane that for a heavyweight near 40 fights the question is still unanswered. Closest I think was Eric Molina causing him a stagger and Harold Sconiers dropping him a lifetime ago. Yesterday Ortiz was using "if I preform...." ??? but today he's trying to muster the tough talk. Fact is he will have to stand in and trade, punch between the windmill of Wilder to land his own lumber very early on and not sold that he's willing to do that.
Re: Wilder-Ortiz set for March 3
I can't stand Wilders big mouth antics, or his terrible form inside the ring. I'm hoping Ortiz' medication can pull him through this big time.
Re: Wilder-Ortiz set for March 3
The way Wilder acts he does come off as a little bit 'touched'. And who names themselves after a Bronze medal ;D:-X.
Derevyanchenko on undercard really being fed a no hoper. Wonder if they are prepping for a Monroe Jr fight.
Re: Wilder-Ortiz set for March 3
Joshua should avoid the pair of them, he is squeaky clean, no shit history like these two, why should he give them a payday? Besides that Wilder is absolute hyped up shite and there are probably 3 or 4 European heavyweights who would do him.

Bronze is more PC than Brown I suppose :-X
I think they're just keeping Derevyanchenko busy after Andrade pulled out of a December fight I think and then out of the negotiations entirely.
This is the annoying part, you have Derevyanchenko, Jacobs, Charlo, Saunders and Murata all fighting roughly a month apart of each other but none are fighting each other. This tip toeing through the tulips stuff needs to stop.

Very true ;D. Wilder would be laughed out of the ring naming himself after a legend. Disappointed in Jacobs just considering Sulecki is coming up again. He killed his momentum off Golovkin in a fight where he proved he belonged and arguably won, just keeping his seat warm here though. I honestly don't see Andrade doing much at 160 but is proving he is very good at pulling out of big fights.
and now have Tiny Tim stuck in my head. Thanks bud ;D.

Lol sorry boss but it seemed appropriate to describe the delicacy with which these elite middleweights are dancing around each other.
