What's the deal with tipping in the US?

I object to paying these peoples wages twice when you the employers supposed to be paying them, my bill pays for that and I'm supposed to pay again? how do they get round the minimum wage?

...seeing how we don't have or condone socialism in it's truest form here Missy we expect some generosity every now and then.

I remember when I went into the Military back in 93' and the military was was facing the Clinton disembowelment....The old timers talked about the paradise they had for 12 straight years and in a flash it was gone....they missed the unlimited money poured into the military....it was like watching addicts in recovery....Republicans spend boatloads for the military and give money back to the top 1% mony makers in the US...never seem to go out of their way for the 99% below...

...well the Democrats (The Kennedy's, Boxer, Pelosi) don't speak for me and the Bush-bot Republicans like Frist, Allen, and DeLay don't speak for me either!

When I said the Republicans were conservative I mean they don't spend a lot...now yes they took money from other places and funded the military but that's different that what Clinton did.

If waitstaff and bartenders didn't have the gratuity than there would be alot of single mothers and college students in the poor house. Not to mention if employers had to pay a decent wage for good service personnel the prices for food and beverages would skyrocket. Being able to earn 150-300 dollars 2-5 times a week at my bar allowed me to go to school full time, pay rent and bills, save a little and actually have enough to do the things I enjoy.

Yeah, but that's wrong. I've no problems tipping for good serive but I shouldn't be expected to subsidise greedy employers...

People should only recieve tips if they earn them.... ;)
i.e. a nice helpful taxi driver or stunning waitress who gives you a cheeky wink and unbuttons the 'top few' just enough so as to gain a sly eyefull of her ample titties. 8)

Well missy it is your option to tip or not and how much, but if someone gives you good service and you don't tip them a decent amount I wouldn't suggest coming back. Although it is not always the case, gratuity motivates the employee to give better service rather than just a flat wage. And in the end whats the difference between paying 25-45% more across the board for food and beverages or giving a good tip for good service? Everyone should have to work for tips at some point in their life so they no what its like. I can't lie I used to hate it when the Europeans from the fire school would be in town and come to the bar. They'd drink all night and keep me very busy, and run up a huge tab and then tip maybe a dollar. When in Rome do as the Romans.

I'll say it again ..your NOT paying twice...If service personel were payed a wage comensurate to their work then the food/beer/etc would cost quite a bit more and your service would be worse. And in the end if you want to be a cheap piece of sh!t than you don't have to tip for at least adequate service(at your own peril of course). It is a system that allows for what is basically a rather menial job to pay well and what is a very dog eat dog business to lower its overhead and still provide quality service. Do you have any idea how many busniesses would have to close if all the sudden they had to pay top notch waitstaff what they were worth?

You get paid to do a job. There shouldnt be no extra's.

waitstaff/bartenders in the US make 2-3 dollars an hour and sometimes none at all the gratuity that they EARN with good service is their wage. And in the US no taxpayers money goes to pay any employees other than federal employees...I don't understand why this is such a big deal or hard concept to grasp. Tip earning jobs are essential to a large part of young people b/c of the ability to be flexible with their schedules and the ability to make decent money while going to school, caring for their children etc. If yall don't like the plan than vacation somewhere else. I don't complain about the higher prices or poor service when I travel to Europe b/c thats just the way it is.

I think everyone grasps that these people deserve to earn decent money. No one begrudges other people making a lving. The point is that we (as consumers) are paying for the service when we go into a restaurant/bar etc etc. The employer factors staff wages into thier overheads, so why therefore should we have to pay again to offset the modest wage?

why does it make a difference if you pay 30 dollars for a dinner for 2 plus 5-10 dollars in tip or pay 50-75 dollars for a dinner for two with no tip. As a one time bartender and manager I can assure you that there would be a huge increase in prices. On a typical night I would have 8-12 waitresses, 3-6 bartenders and 1-3 barbacks. These employees nights wages comes from their own personal sales not there hours worked. Now if I had to pay these employees an hourly wage regardless of the nights sales comensurate with their worth I'd have to charge alot to make up for slow and off nights. When you go to a rest./bar you pay for the meal/drinks and you tip for the service. If its good give a good tip if its lousy don't tip and speak to the manager. This system really works out better for the consumer and the business by providing a cheaper product and motivating a service person to work harder for a tip that is not guaranteed.

u dont have to tip alot ...try to tip people that handle your food

and nobody is ever upset really when they only get like 1$ atleast its 1$ so carry some 1$'s for short taxi rides and only tip door people and luggage people ON THE WAY IN not out ....however you do notice things like SUPER clean cabs that look like they never been riidden in and a guide/ host / entertainer attitude from the cab driver almost really make you want to tip!

Looking at UK/European customer service ....... then looking at US customer service.

Maybe there is something in the tipping culture after all?
