Re: Who is the greatest in your opinion??
I'd have to say Roy Jones. Seriously, used to hate him for several reasons and none of them had to do with his abilitly. I love the man now (in a totally straight way).
My number 2? George Foreman. Bring it. lol

Ali was too. I never get tired of watching The Thrilla.., or Rumble.. Ever. Add what the man has done away from the ring that reflects well on the sport and my mind is made up.
Cool Click for you sir. :coolclick: Excellent point about the sport needing Ambassadors.

I'll say this, I was in an elevator at work the other day, kind of in a shitty mood. Some guys who you could tell were casual fans and nothing more were talking about Ali and how no other boxer in the history of the sport could touch him blah blah blah, without thinking I snickered in the most rude and smart ass way I knew how. Least to say they quit talking and I felt like a dick afterward. The thing is, if you're talking strictly abilities in the ring and not achievements outside of it IMO (and quite a few others) Ali doesn't come close to many of the fighters I've seen. No doubt he's the biggest name boxing has ever seen, simply because of the time period he was in. The use of draft dodging combined with the whole muslim religion front made him the huge icon he is. He was just a normal guy who was just as much a sinner as everyone else on here, and was nothing more than excited about the idea of being a muslim - but the people took it one step further and built him up to be this living god. Do you really believe that if Ali had fought in this era he would be beloved in the same way? No, the second he said he was a muslim we'd all say ok, you wanna fly a plane into my house?
one of the greatest heavyweights of all time easily, but heavyweight is the keyword
just an opinion tho, could easily be wrong :-\

agreed my friend.
Ali was good, ali was great but not the greatest, his reputation is built on the era, his awesome personallity i mean he was cocky no doubt he had charisma but was he undefeated ..no did he have titles in different wieght classes ..no
i think its cos yeh he knocks out liston in the round he predicted he did alot for boxing and the whole muslim thing.. and yes he was one of the greatest if not the greatest heavywieghts but certainly not the greatest boxer and it bewilders me that the casual fan or even the boxing fanatic will say well roy has lost 3 fights and hes no longer great but ali is thought of as you said nearly in god like proportions and should have damaged his legacy for staying in the business far longer than he should have! but is stil thought of as the greatest, far from it.. i'd like to see the tough assed lighter boxing warriors get some recognition liek chavez, duran (mainstream, he is a legend to most fanatics) and others like them.

See if you can order the fight on e-bay, after you see the clinic put on by Whitaker you will be surprised at the draw result.

Yeah bro, Whitaker won easy. You could argue Whitaker was unbeaten until the Trinidad fight.

I myself may not call him the "greatest" but many people simply don't understand why he was called the greatest. He was, and sometimes is still, called the greatest because he was the first heavyweight boxer who had the ability to "box." Heavyweights are notorious for their inability to box, in a technical sense, mainly because of their slowness. Most of them can be classified as "slow sluggers" if there is such a classification. Just watch Ali's early fights and try to analyse them without prejudice. You'll be amazed at his footworks, his stamina, his stinging jabs, which by themselves sometimes caused the early downfall of his opponents - that jab that's almost like a straight, and his "dance," yes he dances away gracefully from most of his opponents attack, evading their punches with a continuous dancelike movements and footworks - and what's more amazing is that he did that sometimes for the entire 15 rounds! No other heavyweight boxer before (and even up to now) comes close to him when it comes to the way he boxes technically, even though he may not be the biggest puncher. That's why he was considered, and many still do consider him, "the Greatest." And adding to that, his flamboyance - his controversial character outside the ring - did help him somewhat to gain that title.

joe frazier--2 for 3
ken norton--2 for 3
earnie shavers--old
no other boxer could have done this especially after a 4 yr retirement.

Yeah bro, the original Sugar Ray was flawless. Robinson also fought & beat some of the greatest fighters ever: Lamotta, Armstrong, Gavilan, Graziano, Basilio. As well as the best fighters at welter & middle.

Lets see Robinson at one stage stood at a career record of 140-1, Ali finished on 56-5.
Robinson met and beat the following fighters who were, had or would become World Champions
Sammy Angott (three times)
Fritzie Zivic
Jake LaMotta (five times)
Henry Armstrong
Tommy Bell (twice)
Kid Gavilan (twice)
Carl 'Bobo' Olson (four times)
Rocky Graziano
Randy Turpin
Gene Fullmer (one win and a draw)
Carmen Basilio
Ali beat
Archie Moore
Sonny Liston (twice)
Floyd Patterson (twice)
Joe Frazier (twice)
Bob Foster
Ken Norton (twice)
George Foreman
Leon Spinks
I make that 22 wins for Robinson against 12 to Ali
And all of Robinson's victories were against fighters who were THE World Champion in their time, not just an alphabet title holder...
No one in Queensberry Rules Boxing history has the Great to Excellent names, Robinson had on his record.
And like Ali, Robinson cameback and won World Championships after an initial retirement.

I have The Brockton Blockbuster at #56....
Greb(b) was Greater IMO because:
Only 8 defeats in 299 fights in only 13 years, Harry died in 1926 aged only 32 (Died under anaesthetic in surgery)
Only man to beat Gene Tunney as a pro
Three year reign as Middleweight Champion beating Mickey Walker during his reign.
Beat a Tommy Gibbons, who went into the fight unbeaten (76-0-1-1)
Beat Tommy Loughran and a 45-1 Jimmy Slattery
Also claimed 'Newspaper Decisions' over Gibbons, Tunney, Tiger Flowers, Maxie Rosenbloom, Kid Norfolk, Gunboat Smith, Mike McTigue and Battling Levinsky.
And on top of all this, he fought his entire pro career with only sight in one eye!

It's based on the fact that Chavez was past his prime when he fought Whitaker - it's all about opinions afterall ;)

Very true, I love to debate. But the only way you can say a fighter is beyond his prime is if he has either loss or has showed signs of slowing down, at the time of the fight Chavez had done niether. He had a brilliant performance before and after the Whitaker fights so how can you say he was out of his prime.

I dont't think any fighter has ever been in their prime after 13 years and 88 fights as a pro, just the way I see it.

Very funny. Fighters such as Mosley, Lacy, Maywheather, Taylor, Ried had tons of fights (some in the hundreds) far before they ever even turned pro, what does that mean? That means if you are fighting part time boxers (boxers who cant live off of their wages so they have to work other jobs) it's very easy to build a record like that, and it would not take 13 years I tell you that much. Add the fact that Chavez is only a year and a half older than Whitaker you dont have much. I won't take anything from Chavez because he was a great fighter but prime or no prime Pernell Whitaker was better, he proved it time and time again.

Re: Who is the greatest in your opinion??
I wonder about the number one spot.
Was the welterweight and middle division from 1940 to 1965 quality?
The 1970s Heavyweight division was the best ever.
Sugar Ray Robinson won in round 10 alot. I wonder if he had a wearing down,
tactic then take them out in 10 thing going?
For the number one spot...
1. Robinson & Ali.
