I have about 110 amatuer fights a few regional titles and runner up national title and worked as a sparring partner....Never a pro career though

good points but i believe announcers, judges and refs. should have at least some experience because those who lack a close empathy with the sport maybe more easily manipulated to cheat a fighter for a quick buck.Quote:

Boxed from 8-16... Im 24 now. Was never that good. Got great training but would always go back to brawling when I got in trouble... Was cut out to be a spectator I guess :'(
Me too mate, I've got a great boxing brain, it's just the body and the balls that I lack.Quote:

I try to explain how nasty a body punch can be, but I think it is something you really need to experiance.
I've never boxed but I have punched in the stomach. I couldnt get up for about 10 minutes.Quote:

Anyway, some people draw the blueprints while other people build the project.  You can mentally know how to do something from step one to fin but not have the physical skills to accomplish the task.  That doesn't make you less aware than the person who has both.

it's hard to get fights when you're in the big boy division...might go months....or have to fight in open class....either way if your in shape you could dominate...providing you can take a good shot to the head....Quote:

I always assumed that most of the people on in this forum competed at some level...just as important as competing is being a student of the game and being able to break down a fight...I still have some active amature and pro friends that are not very good at breaking down a fight....or at least picking the right opponents ;) and their records show it....
I agree with the poster that is frustrated with most announcers that have never had a boxing lesson let alone been in the ring with anyone hitting back...I often wonder how LL, Manny, George or Roy kept from telling Merchant and Lampley to Shut the eff up!
I'm not sure how much in the ring experience Al Bernstein has but he seems to do a pretty good job...imo
Only jesting mate, I wouldn't even climb into the ring for sparring session, I'm a bit gay really.Quote:

Good Post!!!! It gives you a better understanding of those shots that don't look bad but are!!!....EG when Foreman KO'd Moorer it looked like a slow glancing blow from one point but it was a Hell of a shot...One guy said to me after the fight " That was a bunch of B$%%S$#% look how slow that was"...Plus you really do appreciate things more...Like defensive fightersQuote:

My father taught me how to box. He was an accomplished writer (i.e., novelist and journalist), and fought professionally in the 20s. I started at the Panther Boys Club in Ft. Worth, Texas, but the Golden Gloves was extremely competitive, and I did not box again until college, and that was intramurals at the University of Washington. There has aways been a fascination with the sport; I was better in football, baseball and field events in track though. Lastly, I was never shot five times, and I served in the Army for three years in a combat unit! I have three grown children and ten grandchildren. They thinlk, not fight (my son is a major in the Army, a Ranger however).
Well come on then tell us. Do they not have draws in amatuer fight or something?Quote:
