Re: CALZAGHES OPPONENT REVEALED
This fight is complete and utter bollocks. What is the point of risking a hand injury fighting a complete nobody.
He lost to Sam Soliman ???
For fucks sake, Calzaghe and Hatton have both soiled their reputations with these fights.
Why the hell would you fight a guy who lost to Sam Soliman, he's the 160 lb version of Maussa.
a big :sadclick: to Joe, Frank and Ricky.

Re: CALZAGHES OPPONENT REVEALED
I am almost certainly in a minority of one, but I would like to see Calzaghe have this one last fight and retire.
A dodgy hand, bad back and personal problems...
Calzaghe needs to retire before he loses to someone who should not be able to beat him.

The mandatories and the belts should be a non-issue. Everyone knows JC is the man at SMW--and at this late stage in his career, he's fighting for legacy, not for alphabet straps. I'm sure you agree (and that history will too) that a fight against the Kessler/Beyer winner for no belts/alphabet title would be far more important and meaningful than a "title fight" against a no-name bum like Stieglitz.

so you consider his end is coming right away Mr Britkid ? I don't think so, he trained so hard these last years, I think he can still do it, but only for big fights. I think he wants, you know, to retire but with big names on his resume :)
you're by far too pesimist my friend O0

I know his hand is bad but a bad back?
And personal problems ???
What personal problems does he have now that stop him from fighting effectively.
Kassim Ouma has personal problems, Calzaghe has a life that most of us would love to experience

Calzaghe has had pull out of fights because of his back...
His hand can 'go' at any time
He is going though marital trouble
He is 34 years old... It is time to quit on top IMO. ;)

I had a bad back once, I got over it.
His divorce is over, he's shacked up with a fucking hottie now, anyways why does that stop him boxing? I don't imagine he's the type to cry into a beer glass.
His hands are fucked I agree, but then Cory Spinks' hands are almost useless and yet he still fights ok. :P

Agreed!!!!!!! get out while you are intact and still have something left..No shame in it....Joe has had a good career....He will be a future HOF fighter due to his longevity at 168 at solid grasp of the WBO belt for so long
he has money why stick around

Re: CALZAGHES OPPONENT REVEALED
Nah I disagree entirely and I would have thought that you of all people Britkid would hate it when a champion leaves undefeated.
I mean what happens to the linear championship?
All the greats have to lose, pass the torch onto a younger, fresher fighter who then runs with it for a brief moment until he in turn is vanquished and the a new King crowned.
Retiring with all the belts is like playing pass the parcel and when it stops on you, you just take it and leave, unsporting in the extreme.
Personally I have far more respect for aging warhorses who carry on and fall in battle to a young pretender.
Go out on your shield man!!!!
Retirement is for pussies.

Re: CALZAGHES OPPONENT REVEALED
I would have perferred Joey Spina over this bum. Calzaghe looks like he's just gonna sit on that Lacy win for the rest of his career. Easy fight for him when the style is Jeff Lacy's. But the hype of the fight is enough to hold him dowwn for his career, I'll doubt he'll take another risk again.

It's a square shaped canvas with Turnbuckles in the corners surrounded by ropes.
You enter it and fight you're opponent under the Queensberry rules.
Hope this helps.

So you're saying the ref and the judges are irrelevant ;)
-
Re: CALZAGHES OPPONENT REVEALED
They're supposably impartial... no matter what country.
That's not my point though... Daxx is saying that after watching Ricky Hatton coming to America and being out boxed and receiving a win from what should of been a draw that Calzaghe won't come to America...
Coming to America had nothing to do with Hatton's performance, fact is his camp did a bad job of brining him up in weight and his strategist did an even worse job in thinking he could out maul some one naturally 2 stones heavier than him.
Who cares where the ring was?

because they think the impartialness of the judges and the ref are going to effect performance and in ways it does.
But if Hatton got a decision that was supposed to be a draw here, he would have got a unanimous decision in England, or at least thats the thought.
But if it doesn't matter where the ring is, why won't Joe give it a try?
-
Re: CALZAGHES OPPONENT REVEALED
Who says he won't? Who is available in October?
The date was set before they found an opponent, no one said this was a super fight, I'll just glad to have seen him take a break, get active and ready to go into a big fight.

Unfortunately your last quote is bit to close to the knuckle to be even ironic...
I have never have slagged off a fighter who has retired.
This sport is barbaric; I love it; but I can see why some people want it banned.
So when a fighter retires, even if it ruins a lineage or is before a fighter fulfills his destiny IMO; who am I to criticize? I am not taking the punches or doing the sacrifices required to be a world class fighter.
Surely you do not want to see Calzaghe ultimately become another Ali or Holyfield and delude himself that he still has what it takes? It is much less painful to be a Marciano or Ricardo Lopez. ;)

Re: CALZAGHES OPPONENT REVEALED
I think most people are missing the point here. Yeah the guy hes fighting is shit, but with all the big fights not possible at this time hes just going for the easy victory which he can get through without injury or any other problems so he'll be well prepared for Woods, Johnson ect... when the time comes. The opponent is shit, thats the point!
As for people who say he should fight one of the better known and more worthy contenders, whats the point? Hes beaten any contender who's challenged his title for nearly 9 years. If he wins its expected - hes still got to fight the big names, whereas if he inconcievably loses thats royally fucked everything up. On top of that he could get injured again which would also mess up his plans.
This is simply a fight to win easily and get out of the way while maintaining his health and waiting for the big fights to come available early next year.

If he wanted an easy fight he could have fought Spina or Green, hell even the guy who knocked out Yusef Macke would have been "easy" but this is a 1 cent hooker if we're talking about easy that Joe's fighting!!!

Agreed. What I was really concerned about was that there was/is a behind closed doors deal with Stieglitz's people for him to get a shot down the line. Which is complete and utter b/s if it happens, cause no one's gonna look back in 20 years and say. 'Look, he's got Stieglitz on his record, he must be a great'.

Yes adam but the ref didnt let hatton fight his usual fight. Hatton usually gets in close, holds and wrestles quite a bit. The ref didnt allow this. But anyway back to calzaghe. If calzaghe were to retire then the only thing he could say is that he beat an old eubank and one good fighter in lacy. Hmm not many big fights in his career, played it pretty safe and now hes fighting bika...i will be cheering on bika but we all know this is well beyond a joke.

Shutting up Froch!?! Hmmm.... I'd be able to forgive Calzaghe (or anybody) for a lot of things if he could do that. I'm just not sure anything short of murder will solve the problem.
Probably if Froch was treated in the same way as Lacy was against Calzaghe, he'd still come out saying that he won the fight and that he's the greatest fighter of all time.

I don't think we will ever see Joe in a super fight.. :'( he will get injured again before he meets Kessler, Beyer, Taylor or Wright. What a watse of talent >:mad

I think over the years Joe has put too much trust in FW to select his opponents. But has he done a bad job? :-\

I'll wait and see, and this fight is not the be all and end all of everything for Calzaghe, and probably will be better for him considering he's returning from an injury which has kept him out for four months, but I am a doubting Thomas, and want to see those massive superfights being made, and the key for me is that he has stated he only has three fights left. After this, will two super-fights, however exciting, e enough to cement his legacy as a legend? time will tell....

Re: CALZAGHES OPPONENT REVEALED
Was there ever any doubt that Calzaghe was going to fight a near no namer? Afterall thats mostly what he's been doin his entire career. Aside from an OLD Eubank, OLD Charles Brewer, OLD Byron Mitchell, and Jeff Lacy. Who has he beaten? Mostly unknown European competition, and he hasn't always dominated them either. It's not like he will never fight another super fight, I'm sure he will. One of my favorite fighters, Bernard Hopkins, did the same thing after destroying Tito Trinidad. He came back and fought a soft mandatory. So Calzaghes behavior is excusable but still disapointing. :-\ I say he's hopin Woods will beat Glen Johnson, because Johnson will pound Calzaghe's ass IMO.

Yeah; isn't it a great move by F. Warren to have Joe fight Bika on the same day when Kessler is fighting Beyer. Bika hammered Beyer into the floor and got only robbed by a corrupt German refs, docs, judges, blitzkrieg fritzes and sausage cooks who saved a technical draw for Beyer when Beyer was just about to pass out, lose his virginity, bleed to death, and disappear alltogether from the face of this earth.
So noone will be interested in this pussy Kessler fighting the corps of Beyer when Joe fights Beyer's conqueror, the great Bika. Face it: Joe Calzaghe is having the true unification fight on October 14, not Kessler. And anyway, who is Kessler. No opponent is big enough for Joe, but if any comes remotely close to it it's Bika
