Re: larry holmes--what do u think about him
Foreman didn't want to fight him during his comeback because who would want to see 2 old guys fighting?
Earnie Shavers might be one of the most overrated fighters of all time...Foreman would have whipped his ass too, take a look at his record vs power punchers
People just didn't want to fight Foreman, same thing happened with Tyson only Tyson fought cruiserweights that weren't any good.
Foreman would beat Holmes and that's my final stance...Holmes is an all-time great but George would destroy him
For a guy who's defense was "just as good as Ali's" he was on the canvas an awful lot more

Re: larry holmes--what do u think about him
foreman had hes fair share at hitting the canvas ;)

Only three fights... he was only stopped once, and the last time he hit the deck was 29 years ago ;)

Foreman was past his best post Ali IMO (71 to 74), so that makes it only one knockdown...
Holmes as well only went down once in his prime (ShaversII), as he too was past his best post Ali IMO (77 to 80)

That's RON Lyle and no one said Foreman's defense was good! I'm just saying if Holmes was a defensive guru then why did he get rocked all the time? We all know George just swung for the fences and sometimes got countered...so he went down vs Ron Lyle, he's a harder puncher than Renaldo Snipes AND shortly there after Big George put him to sleep.
As for Cooney he was trying to make a comeback...it was in 1990 and Holmes didn't fight that year, he laid off from 88 to 91

Re: larry holmes--what do u think about him
One of the more exciting heavyweight fights I have ever seen...Foreman-Norton wasn't half bad either

I liked that one to....but they just showed the Foreman-Lyle fight last month on Classic ESPN...so it is really fresh in my warped mind...:) that is one of my favorite fights ever!!

Re: larry holmes--what do u think about him
I like it when they show Foreman's greatest hits...he was such a beast!!!
Poor Joe Frazier...beats Ali then gets knocked senseless in 2 fights with Big George
Same with Kenny Norton!

LOL, I always enjoyed the knockdown when Frazier was clean lifted off the floor by Foreman's punch.
I always thought that, that was the most embarrassing moment in Frazier's career.... then I heard him sing... and last week I caught an old clip of him drowning swimming in the American version of Superstars ;)

He was undoubtedly motivated for that fight, and I am sure he rightly takes a lot of pride from that fight. But it was one last hurrah of prime Black Cloud, as IMO it does not hide the fact that he was slipping slowly post 1980, and often lacked motivation in fights, particularly 1983 onwards.

Long, long time since I saw that match...
From what I remember Whitherspoon was unlucky and the 12th was like a poor mans Holmes/Norton 15th...
And also remember after watching it (in late 85), big time wanting Tubbs to beat Whitherspoon, as i felt (with hindsight rightly) ol' Bomber Bruno would of had a better chance against TNT Tubbs rather than Terrible Tim.

Re: larry holmes--what do u think about him
i had holmes just about winning but close fight
-

But as you quite rightly put it, that fight, even defeat, was the making of Tim.
Which is rather ironic for the King of 'The Lost Generation'... ;)

Re: larry holmes--what do u think about him
yea i was very impressed with hes slickness what happened to him britkid because he looked great in that fight

In no particular order...
Drugs
Don King
Lack of motivation ;)

Re: larry holmes--what do u think about him
shame what a waste of talent
-
Re: larry holmes--what do u think about him
Hopefully Chazz can have the career success Tim never did (when compaired to what people expected from him)
-
Re: larry holmes--what do u think about him
Like everyone he had his faults, but I feel he was under appreciated as Champion, He was a sound boxer , with lots of heart and determination , Holmes defended his title for many years . I thought he wooped Spinks’s running ass. ;D
-
Re: larry holmes--what do u think about him
yes me too i think first fight with spinks was very close to hard to judge but 2nd fight larry definetly won without a doubt. and another thing i like about holmes is that when he wasnt in wars i liked hes tactical fighting like fight with witherspoon i watched that today and i really enjoyed it.

Cooney was looking for a pay day nothing more...if he were planning a comback why would he take on Foreman after a 3 year layoff? That fight was a joke...
Rocked all the time by who??? Snipes did knock Holmes down and then got TKO'd in the 11th...Larry was also knocked down by Shavers and TKO'd Ernie in the 11th....Larry was knock down by a no name Kevin Isaac and then KO'd him in the next round...How many times was Larry holmes KO'd in his prime years after facing hitters like Shavers, Smith, Witherspoon and Norton? Answer: none
If you want to keep bringing up Renaldo Snipes you have to accept the fact that George was dropped by the far lighter hitting Jimmy Young...And if you compare the two you have to look at the competition they faced while Holmes faced something like 11 undefeated fighters in his first career going 48-1 Foreman only faced 3 undefeated foes and except for Frazier the other two names are unrecognizable...

Re: larry holmes--what do u think about him
To be honest I dont like holmes but.. you hold the title that long and well your up there with the best, also had he fought tyson at his best he may have... may have beaten mike by decsion he had a great jab and it frustrated tyson slightly, in his prime you can increase reflexes speed accuracy, whether or not he could keep mike off all night I dont know but it would be a pic em fight. He was a great fighter just not miy type
-
Re: larry holmes--what do u think about him
I gotta give Holmes his props for the amount of time he held the title. Holmes was a brillant fighter with one of the best jabs ever. I feel if he had of fought in another era amoung other greats in their prime he would have held a much hiher standing today. It is not Holmes' fault he fought in a weak era but it does make it hard to compare his best wins with others because there was no one really syellar on Holmes' record.
The thing that makes me dislike Holmes these days is he always whines about being under-appreciated. He should just shut that sh*t up, we all know he was a great fighter, he just never had a dance partner to prove it!
