I agree. Beating Maskaev would mean what? Maskaev is a worse champion that John Ruiz, who Roy Jones beat.
It would mean Hopkins would be a three weight world champion, would be the only the second man ever to hold the middleweight, light heavywieght and heavyweight titles, it would elevate his legacy above that of Hagler, Leonard, Roy Jones and maybe even Ray Robinson and he would retire a legend.
I think he would also be the second oldest heavyweight champ of all time behind Foreman, not sure how old Woolcott was.
Oh and he would proabably make about $20,000,000 dollars.
If I was Hopkins, I take this fight ;)
Exactly where would this $20,000,000 come from ???
What do you mean if B Hop came back and challenged for a heavyweight title it would HUGE!!!!!!!!
If Mayweather who isn't a big PPV star can get $8 million to fight Baldomir, B-Hop would easily make double that and probably a lot more to fight for the heavyweight championship of the world.
Furthermore, considering the state of the American heavyweight scene he would be hyped as the American saviour, there would be such an unbelievable hoo-ha over this fight that I don't think you are capable of understanding.
Trust me it would be HUGE. He'd probably enter the ring to a 12 gun salute, they would all sing the good ole Land of the Free and the Brave, he'd might wear his executioner's mask again, hell they'd probably even have him carrying an axe with one of his entorage holding a fake Maskaev head on a spike, it would be fucking tremendous.
If this fight ever happens it will be MASSIVE!

Sorry man, but that's completely warped. Roy Jones at the height of his career made $10 mil against Ruiz, in a ppv that didn't come close to an average DLH fight. Maskaev might be even less famous than Ruiz. There is no money in this fight.

Yeah thats way off
Hopkins just isn't that big...He "only" got around $8 million against De La Hoya...and wasn't even part of the highest selling De La Hoya PPV - Trinidad.
Hopkins-Tarver PPV had around 350,000 buys...same as Mayweather-Judah
Plus WBC champ or not, no ones shelling out too much with Maskaev involved... Maskaev-Rahman had about 10 PPV buys and lost a shit load of dough ;D

The circumstances here are far removed from when Roy Jones fought John Ruiz though.
Firstly Jones had been at light heavy for for the better part of his career, so the move up was not so drastic. Secondly he was fighting probably the least popular heavyweight world champion in the history of the sport.
Hopkins has retired having already made history, with his win over Tarver achieving what his hero Suger Ray Robinson failed to do. Hopkins popularity right now has probably never been higher.
Maskaev may not be very well known in the US but his appearances on HBO have been dramatic. Punching Rahman clean out of the ring 6 years and knocking him in the final round of their rematch last month have left the impression with the American public that Maskaev can punch.
Add this to the fact that the American heavyweight scene is in disarray right now with the title's going to Eastern European born fighters an attempt by Hopkins to win back a heavyweight belt for America would create a considerable sense of patriotic sentiment, the American's being after all probably the most patriotic nation in the world.
If Hopkins did come back out of retirement it would create a huge buzz in the sport and people would definitely want to see it.
I could see it being one of the biggest fights of 2007.

There would be absolutely no buzz outside of hardcore fans. No one knows, nor cares, who Makaev is. He's simply a heavyweight trinket holder, Wlad is the true champ, and Hopkins would get no where near $20 mil for even fighting Wlad, let alone a no name. Smaller man moving up to fight a heavyweight is old news now (Roy, Toney).

maybe its old news technicly ..BUT hopkins is 41 yrs old ...41!! ...that adds a whole new spin on things he may be lining himself up to be considered "best ever" i mean seriously even though he lost to JT ,JT did anything but TAKE the titles from him ...i always have felt that you should TAKE the titles from a champ ...JT got a concussion in the 1st fight and seriously should have lost ....anyway w/e... i think it will be a huge deal for hopkins to win a heavyweight title

I think the Russians are conquering the heavywieght division because large American athletes are playing sports....that don't give decisions to Vernon Forest.

yea besides the fact that all 4 current champions are still garbage, Taylor can't really handle punches at 160, he'd get demolished at 175, so no way he'd make it to 200

Re: hopkins to fight maskaev for heavyweight title
Problem is Hopkins does not have the frame to be a heavyweight. James Toney can barely pull it of, and Roy couldnt against anyone else buy Ruiz

you cuntts!!.. skill wise hopkins beats all the heavyweights out there ... and if he manages to make wieght and muscle like he did upto light heavy, and he proves his chin can hold out, then he is unstoppable at heavywieght!!
and with mackie shilstone its not a long shot
point TWOavich....
why do i get the feeeling hottest fighter... and the former saddo faschist ronnie are the same person and ronnie just made an account so that he could have at least one person agree with his posts??

:coolclick: brother Poom. I agree...Hopkins Toney would be the poop. I'd love it. Hopkins has fared better down the stretch as far as the weight gain goes.
Hopkins by decision...& it would be a beaut.

Cunts? Easy big guy.
While I agree with some of what you say...it's got to be a fight against someone that's not that accomplished.
I know that that sounds bad...but there is only so much that one man can do. While I didn't support the Nard's move to 175lbs...while I won't support the move to 200lbs...I will watch...& I will be thrilled if he wins...I'll just be afraid of him losing...don't see him getting KO'd...just don't want him to lose.
He's had a beaut of a career...& this would make it even more than what it is...but I just don't want to see him lose painfully. Look at his losses...he wasn't hurt...& IWO...he clearly was not outboxed...even by Jones in his prime. That was a much closer fight than it was called. He lost...but wasn't dominated like most think.

Neither was Ruiz but when Jones did it you would have thought he walked on water...Hopkins only has 1 fight out of the middleweight division and he is 40 i give him more props than Jones if he pulled it off....It's all just talk though
