Re: MUHAMMAD ALI WAS NOT THE GREATEST
Just my 2 cents, Ali is the greatest!!! Followed by Louis in 2nd & Johnson in 3rd.
-
Re: MUHAMMAD ALI WAS NOT THE GREATEST
I also don't think he was the greatest... He the physical skills much of the time, but alot of his fights he just didn't show up... I've seen at like 5-6 fights of his against lower level opponents where he should have lost on points or gets out boxed and wins by KO ala Leonard vs. Mayweather Sr. or Hearns.

Re: MUHAMMAD ALI WAS NOT THE GREATEST
Was he the greatest P4P boxer ever NO!!!!...That will IMO always be Ray Robinson....An arguement that no one could ever change my mind on...Was he the greatest Heavyweight ever YES!!!!!....Again an arguement no one could ever change my mind on.....
Gold Medal winner....First 3 time HW champion ever....His speed was something to be marveled...To see a man that big throw punches so fast...He floated ( almost literaly) his footwork is almost un matched....He had a chin that was like granite....He fought Liston, Patterson, Quarry, Bunger, Frazier, Ellis, Bonevena, Foreman, Norton, Cooper, Folley...I could go on for hours. His rope a dope makes you wince at the shots he takes yet scream at his ability to withstand them. He was a money maker. He predicted and came through on his KO's.....
When he lost he came back better than before. He never looked for the easy fight. He hit harder than most give credit for..........
Perhaps what made him the GREATEST of them all is he stood by his convictions...Never was backed down by the public or goverment....
And to think we missed some of his prime during exile!!!!!!!
To talk about him as anything but great is ignorance...The man is an Icon and American Culture Symbol.....Point mader case closed....Name one fighter....Make that Athlete to even compare to him all around...Not in one aspect but the whole package!!!!!!........Someone BOOT THIS CLOWN.....He stinks up tha place....This is not opinion...This was something just to get us going....Probably the same guy who posted a while back Ali died.....

Re: MUHAMMAD ALI WAS NOT THE GREATEST

Re: MUHAMMAD ALI WAS NOT THE GREATEST
ali was the greatest-he could beat all the rest of the greats--made good fighters look bad, just 2 good --the perfect boxer if there ever was 1
there was however 1 boxer he could not beat convincinly---ken norton

Robinson was the greatest ever, but for heavyweight it was Ali. As for Ken Norton every fighter has that one guy who gives him grief... for Ali it was Norton.

Norton says he won all 3. And Jake LaMotta says he won 3 out of 6 with Robinson.
Every "perfect" boxer has that thorn of a fighter that makes them look human.
Some are lucky and avoid them or never have the chance to fight them. IMO.

I agree with you, he is definitely the athlete/personality of the 20th century. The only person who I think can come close in terms of recognition and supremacy within their sport is Pele - but he did not become the social symbol that Ali (maybe not wholly intentionally) became.

Yeah, Larry Holmes was a great fighter, but I think the guy who comes first gets much more credit (maybe as Holmes stylistically had some things in common with a mid-career Ali, he was written off unfairly as a clone or carbon-copy). Ali broke the mold for a heavyweight fighter, in the way he fought as well as the way he conducted himself. Also, I suppose, many of Homes' defences were for alphabet belts while Ali defended the WORLD title. Not entirely Holmes' fault, but it is still the way that it is?

Re: MUHAMMAD ALI WAS NOT THE GREATEST
Ali would have whooped Tyson so bad that Tyson would have lost his lisp, so you're just rambling on about retarded shit, ok buddy ;)

I think you're right - Holmes has been almost criminally underrated. His crime was following a dominant all time great. He is Ezzard Charles and Gene Tunney all over again (they were underrated, and still are, having followed Louis and Dempsey)
Holmes would have given any heavyweight in history a damn good fight in his prime, and not at long odds either.

Re: MUHAMMAD ALI WAS NOT THE GREATEST
Ali is the Greatest heavyweight ever IN the ring because he was suposedly suposed to have no chance to win against liston ...and TEN whole years later against Foreman who also was suposedly unbeatable...then held the titles for 4 years ...and he did what he did against joe frazier and every other top 10 heavyweight in the 15 years he fought ....
also hes the "Greatest " because before those "un-winnable" fights when experts expected him to get destroyed he told them hed win Because he the greatest ...he never had a loss that was not revenged twice untill he was 39 and had parkinsons
Also he was 1st to win the titles 3 times and was the best in the division at any given time between 1963-1977
-
Re: MUHAMMAD ALI WAS NOT THE GREATEST
Ali was one of the most elegant ive ever watched....
but all the fighters of that era didnt hardly even lift weights or anything, they look like average joes.
put a body building regimin on ali and bring him from the past till now, it would be murderous!!!!!!! O0
-
Re: MUHAMMAD ALI WAS NOT THE GREATEST
I still am not convinvced that weight lifting improves a fighter that much. Basically, only the heavyweights can do it as everyone else is battling the scales.
I still think that a bulked up, muscley Holyfield was less strong than Sonny Liston for example, despite all the woeightlifting
