I agree with you, De La Hoya was a great fighter but it cannot be ignored that of all the elite fighters he fought who were in their prime he either lost, or should have lost.
Hopkins,
Mosely twice,
Trinidad,
Quartey
Whittaker
Sturm.
So his best performances were against Vargas, Gatti and Chavez who could all be summed up in three words, shot, shit and shot ;)

Winky Wright, I told you earlier.
Thats all :)
And that was for the post maker to answer but cc anyway
Well he never fought Forrest either and as I said above, the great ones that he did fight he either lost to, or deserved to have lost to.
I don't think De La Hoya is all that great to be honest. The original poster is correct in saying that the Goldenboy is to at least some degree a product of hype and marketing, just in the same way Tyson was, although the projected image is different.
Oh and cc returned :P

Jesus Christ!!! I mean, I will spell it out again for you again. I NEVER SAID OSCAR HAS NEVER FOUGHT ANYONE!!! I said that Oscar has never really beat anyone. There's a difference.

Re: I'm sorry but ODLH is garbage!!!
if Vargas was shot why was he favored to give Oscar the roughest toughest fight of his career? Why was Chavez considered a "significant step up" And Gatti considered a "dangerous threat" At the current Oscar was fighting them they weren't seen that way, only in hindsight are they called that ;)

He beat Shane in the rematch IMO.....and if you're just looking at the actual record then he beat Sturm and Quartey and Whittaker.
De la Hoya is a Great fighter....you don't have to WIN against all of the greats you just have to at least fight them

VS Mosley in the rematch he got jobbed, vs Trinidad he got jobbed but it was his fault for staying on the bike in the later rounds instead of going for the stoppage.
If Oscar sucks, Mayweather is lower than Whale S***!
I'm not worried about sad clicks. How does Mayweather suck? The guy is a true boxer and the best fighter in the world. Nobody could ever say that about De La Hoya. De La Hoya was never the best boxer of his time. You even said that he ran like a wuss in the Trinidad fight. Come on, I don't think anyone took Vargas seriously after he got owned by Trinidad. And Mayorga is third on your list? HAHAHAHAHA!!! You've got to be kidding. Let's be honest, De La Hoya shouldn't be in the same sentence as PBF, because PBF is just in a much better league. De La Hoya used his overwhelming size advantage in the earlier stages of his career, but as he moved up, he becamse ordinary.
PBF is two weight classes out of his natural weight class and he's still dominating. U can't be serious.
Oscar started at 135 pound and he is argueably the best at 154 today do the math mate ::**
From what you have seen of Mayweather at 140 (Corely, Brussles, Gatti) and 147 (Mitchell, Judah, Baldomir) you honestly think Mayweather could of beat Chavez, Whitaker, Quartey, Trinidad and Mosley all at
147 pound?
Get off the grass man ;D
Ummm, I think you were too busy sad clicking me to read what I was writing. I don't think anyone will agree with you here. ODLH was a MASSIVE 135 and 140, when he moved up to 147 and above, where he didn't have as much physical advantages, he was ordinary. PBF doesn't belong at 147 and is barely a true 140 pounder and he has dominated every fighter he's face from both weight classes. You can talk about Judah,
but let's not forget Judah was the undisputed unified Welterweight champion at the beginning of this year and viciously knocked out a boxing master who fights at 154 (Spinks) to get those belts. And didn't ODLH fight Gatti too? Does that fight not count for ODLH?
I don't click period. Whether someone is big for their weight or not is irrelevent. Fact is ODH has belts at 6 weights PBF has belts at 4 plain and simple. Lets also not forget that Judah was nearly stopped by the feather fisted Baldomir right before he fought PBF and didn't deserve the fight anyway!!
Mayweather hasn't fought anyone listed on a p4p list since Featherweight, Oscar has fought half a dozen. At least we know how good Oscar is, you are just ASSUMING Floyd is as good as you say!! there simply is not enough proof.
It was Oscar that destroyed a 29 year old Gatti!! go and get yourself a tape of Gatti v Robinson and tell me it was the same Gatti Floyd fought?
A 29 year old Gatti was an unfocused brawler who thought he could outslug a physically much bigger fighter in ODLH. Lol, you said 29 year old Gatti like that's supposed to mean something.
Are you suggesting that gatti should have tried to outbox delahoya. please he would have been totally humiliated at least fighting like a warrior he went out on his shield

For exactly the same reasons as Baldimor was supposed to steamroller Floyd, that Margarito is supposed to be truly the best welterweight out there and that Tyson was always going to come back and be great.
Vargas has lost EVERY time he's stepped up in class, so has Gatti. Chavez was old and actually gave De La Hoya some tough times. I cant remember anyone saying that Chazev was the favourite to win prior to those fights with Oscar though.

The same reason that Corrales was supposed to beat Floyd, the same reason that Gatti was considered a dangerous threat for Floyd. IT'S HYPE!!! You can't say that one thing applies for ODLH, but the same doesn't apply for Floyd. That's called being a hypocrite. I remember there were a ton of people from this board that promised Gatti would knock Floyd out and Floyd has never dealt with that type of power. Yeah, sure. BTW, the Vargas fight was very tough until around round 8 when Oscar figured out he should just jab until he lands something big.

well if we are going in that territory then Floyd has lost to Castillo who is probably the best name on his resume, and people who Oscar lost to would eat castillo for breakfast. you have to remember Oscar was considered supernatural just like floyd until he stepped up to fight whitaker who was still better than most people think at the time. Its just that floyd hasn't fought anyone on that level so his bubble is still intact. Castillo and Corrales are names today, years later after floyd fought them. Not many gave castillo a shot against floyd and he was considered a stepping stone for floyd. The only risk floyd ever took was fighting corrales and after that win he truly deserved to be the hottest rising fighter but after he never fought a fighter who was on his level or close to his level. At 140 ricky hatton was the riskiest and richest fight in terms of accolades, sure PBF would be favored to win that fight but at least we would have the satisfaction that he took the risk to mandate the P4P king status. to be great talent alone isn't enough, you need that great opponent to propel you to greatness. So if anything Floyd and Oscar are equals, oscar faired well against some of the greats of his era and floyd looked spectacular beating overmatched opponents, if anything oscar has that edge coz he truly tested himself but floyd would be a case of "what might have been"

I'm tired of people confusing ODLH's mass fan appeal with his actual boxing prowess. I think even he is a little delusional. Well, I paid for the fight and while I thought the last half of the PBF-Baldy fight was uneventful, I thought the fight was worth the money. Isn't ODLH the same guy that made a fight with Yory Boy Campas a pay-per-view. He's a fucking hypocrite. Now he's saying that he doesn't want the PBF fight anymore. What the fuck is that? He's afraid of getting thrown in the garbage like Baldomir did. If he doesn't wanna to get embarrassed in his swan song, that's fine, but he shouldn't patronize the public by telling us all that he wants to fight the best. Yeah right, ODLH isn't the best, and he has proven throughout his career that when it's time to step up his game, he fails. He lost against Sugar Shane twice, he lost against Trinidad because he ran like a baby (he even said he regrets it), he got put out by B-Hop, he got a gift decision against Sturm, Quartey, and Whitaker, and he beat a Trinidad-shot Vargas, and a washed up JCC. Who has this guy ever beat? I'm sorry if this seemed like an unfocused rant, but it was, I just had to say something about this fag.
Stopped reading it seriously after the bold
I agree he's gotten gift decisions but the fact he did enough to even get those fights even if he didn't deserve them was impressive to me.

Re: I'm sorry but ODLH is garbage!!!
Say what you want about him you are entitled to your opinion but Oscar
may have gotten a nod or two and may have losses to a few of the other big names of his era but no one and I put my reputation as a writer on this NO ONE activly sought out the big names like he has....Have they mentioned fighting the other big names yes have one or two big names come together to fight yes but DLH made sure he fought the best out there...He believed that the best should fight only the best and that is what he did look at his resume win or lose.....
Gatti Vargas
Carr Chavez
Hopkins Whitiker
Trinidad Ruelas
Mosley Quartey
Camacho Mayorga
Sturm Campas
Castillejo Leija
Hernandez ( at the time he was undefeated and someone)
Paez Molina
Some great some just good but all top names when they fought all title holders at one time or another.........
That my friend is not garbage...That is what makes HOF fighters and legends
-
Re: I'm sorry but ODLH is garbage!!!
oscar isnt garbage he is a legend on and off the ring... and floyd too will be a legend IMO. why do we have to hate on fighters who had contributed a lot in present boxing? we should appreciate both of them and stop comparing them cuz this will be an endless debate... goodness gracious this has been an issue since mike tyson's era when people were comparing him to ali..
-
Re: I'm sorry but ODLH is garbage!!!

Re: I'm sorry but ODLH is garbage!!!
Oscar fought the best, whether he lost or not is not the question. He had the guts to get in the ring and take the chances and he is a great fighter now. Floyd is lacking guts. He could make these fights if he just takes less money. If he has the confidence he will beat these guys he will dictate the money in future fights if he beats Oscar or Wright. But he lacks confidence so he puts alot of money into it, just to be sure if he loses he still got alot. he lacks something. He needs to fight the best and he has not yet.
-
Re: I'm sorry but ODLH is garbage!!!
He's definitely not garbage. Come on now. I know he has done some pretty gay shit and not everyone might like him, but DLH has fought good opposition, he has won ten titles in six divisions and was an olympic gold medalist. You can't say he's garbage unless you think everyone else out there in pro boxing is garbage because he has accomplished more than 98% of them. Give credit where credit is due. He is a great boxer and a hall of fame bound champion. Dont be a hater cuz he has a prettier latin pop voice than you do LOL.

Re: I'm sorry but ODLH is garbage!!!
You are really an idiot making stupid ass crazy comments like this...
Oscar is among the elite in boxing.. among the vintage crop of fighters that truely became ppv worthy and made the real money in this sport...
and your insane claims about his ability and that he hasnt fought anyone of relevence makes me laugh..
he is a great textbook boxer and an olympic gold medalist... with the most incredible amatuer record i have ever seen...
it is somewhere along the lines of 220 wins 200 knockouts 8 losses and a gold medal.... he was a star before he was even professional!
and he fought some of the greatest fighters of this last generation and those who werent in the greatest catagory were true contenders not like these false contenders that you find top ten ranked today..
he beat the likes of julio cesar chavez, pernell whittaker( close fight but its on the rec.)
hector camacho, ike qaurtey, oba carr, arturo gatti , vargas , campas , mayorga...
on top of all those fights which were wins... he has still been in with and either truely or alledgedly lost , but none the less fought such great and good fighters as trinidad mosely and hopkins..
and is a 6 wieght world champion....
And you claim he is garbage?
there is no other way but to describe your remarks as utterly insane!!
if his career is garbage ... then how in the world do you as a person compare to his profession?
you just cannot.. oscar probably has three times the amounts of accomplishments for each year of your life!!
which just makes you in significant and make you the garbage
enjoy this ;)

Gatti was dangerous because he had more power at a bigger weight class and was a blood and guts fighter......Corrales was just undefeated...simple as that

Re: I'm sorry but ODLH is garbage!!!
Sorry Albsur,I respect your posts usually but this is the most absurd thing I have heard! I'm not even a big Oscar fan but look at his resume!?! Look at who he has fought,I think it is far far superior to PBF's! Secondly you make out as if Oscar NEEDS PBF!?! Hell nooooooo! Oscar does not need anyone! PBF needs him! Oscar calls the shots,he has worked much much harder than anyone else to put himself in that position,so i don't really see what the point of this thread was. You may not like him but I think as a boxing fan,I have to repsect the guy.

LEt me tell you man this ODLH is as smart as it is first he inks Winky so he doesn't have to fight him then after what PBF did to Baldo he knows he also will have a hard time with PBF and the thing is i'm not a fan of PBF funny huh.

Re: I'm sorry but ODLH is garbage!!!
Look I'm done arguing my point, I can't respond to every post by myself, THAT WOULD TAKE FOREVER!!! God, I didn't know there were this many people in love with Oscar De La Hoya in this community. Yall win, ODLH is the ruler and master of the universe, ODLH is the best P4P boxer of all-time. Jesus, I'm poking legitimate holes in the guy's record and people are acting like I'm saying ODLH has never fought anyone. For the last time, listen up, I NEVER SAID THAT!!! I'm basically saying that whenever ODLH stepped up his competition he barely skated by on a gift wrapped Christmas present or he lost. Are you people gonna have the nerve to deny this fact and come up with more nonsense? Some of yall like Lyle, Majesty, and a couple others have decent points and I can agree to disagree, but some of yall aren't adding anything, yall are just attacking me personally like I'm the judge that scored the Trinidad fight. Shit. Some of you babies on this thread believe in De La Hoya like you're six and the mother fucker is Santa Claus. Lord, I just had an opinion about the guy. I had fun debating but then people were just attacking my intelligence and didn't even manage to give an opinion on the topic. Fuck that.

Hey guy, does that quote say that he hasn't fought anybody? I said the people that I BELIEVE he truly beat or looked impressive against, were either mid-level talent or washed up. Does that quote say "He hasn't ever fought anyone?" No, it doesn't, back to the drawing board son.

Hey guy, does that quote say that he hasn't fought anybody? I said the people that I BELIEVE he truly beat or looked impressive against, were either mid-level talent or washed up. Does that quote say "He hasn't ever fought anyone?" No, it doesn't, back to the drawing board son.
ok ok sweetcheeks.. keep your hair on....

couldnt think of a come back.. fact is even if you didnt say he fought noone...
you said the only ones he beat or looked impressive against were mid level or washed up...
and thats not true is it?... exactly... go argue your say on a topic that isnt wrong. period

Re: I'm sorry but ODLH is garbage!!!
My take on ODLH record since 1996:
Ricardo Mayorga 153½ 28-5-1 (Let's not go here please, Mayorga was nothing but a club fighter who Forrest thought he could go toe to toe with)
Bernard Hopkins 156 44-2-1 (He showed up flabby, out of shape, and lost)
Felix Sturm 160 20-0-0 (Christmas came early)
Shane Mosley 154 38-2-0 (Christmas came early for Mosley, but ODLH still couldn't use his physical size advantage to dominate Mosley?)
Yory Boy Campas 153½ 80-5-0 (Come on, and this shit was on PPV, Campas was served up for ODLH on a platter)
Fernando Vargas 154 22-1-0 (Vargas was just like DeLaHoya but worse, fought good fighters well, but came up short against the best of his era)
Javier Castillejo 154 51-4-0 (Quality win over a good fighter)
Arturo Gatti 146 33-4-0 (Just like Vargas but worse)
Shane Mosley 147 34-0-0 (He got outhustled and lost to the smaller man)
Derrell Coley 147 34-1-2 (Who?)
Felix Trinidad 147 35-0-0 (He mysteriously turned into Carl Lewis and paid for it)
Oba Carr 147 48-2-1 (Good quality win)
Ike Quartey 146½ 34-0-1 (Even though I had Quartey winning by one point along with several other people who watched the fight, I will say that this is probably ODLH best win)
Julio Cesar Chavez 144½ 101-2-2 (I don't care what his record says, for god sakes, by this time the wars had caught up with JCC)
Patrick Charpentier 146 27-4-1 (OK?)
Wilfredo Rivera 147 27-2-1 (Decent win)
Hector Camacho 147 63-3-1 (Whoever took Camacho seriously as a fighter, the guy padded his record on the east coast with fighters who belong in a nearby dumpster)
David Kamau 146¾ 28-1-0 (Good win)
Pernell Whitaker 146 40-1-1 (Yeah, he barely won this fight against a little cracked out washed up Whitaker, BTW Whitaker lost or no contested his next three fights)
Miguel Angel Gonzalez 140 41-0-0 (Great win at this stage in his career)
Julio Cesar Chavez 139 97-1-1 (Maybe best win of his career)
Darryl Tyson 139 47-8-1 (Filler win)

so what was the point in putting in the lesser heard guys and putting who or filler...
i'll tell you why you did it... to fill up your post so that it looks like you have an arguement...
and just the fact that you ridicule people like whitaker camacho and make comments about oscars performance against tito... doesnt make them fights that he didnt win or look good in.. and plus the guys which werent filler guys in that post were all good fighters so you have just spelled out your wrong .. but tried to claim they were bums etc, you cannot win, simply because.. you are not right..
just admit it

Sure beating Mayorga was cool, but I don't think anyone really cared afterwards. If he truly is talking about fighting the best for his retirement then he should only be fighting either Floyd Mayweather or Winky Wright. I'm tired of people confusing ODLH's mass fan appeal with his actual boxing prowess. I think even he is a little delusional. This guy has the nerve to say that he didn't think that the entire PBF card was worth the money. I'm sorry if this seemed like an unfocused rant, but it was, I just had to say something about this fag.
you're contradicting yourself, you complain that Oscar got gift decisions against Sturm and quartey but make no mention that Tito and Mosley got a gift decision against Oscar.
ODh is a great fighter, his performances and record speaks for itself

He seriously lost two (Mosley I, Hopkins) times and he got 2 maybe 3 (Sturm, Whittaker, Quartey) decisions he didn't deserve.
You know...I got halfway through the stupidity & decided to stop reading on both your posts.
Oscar & Floyd are two of the most gifted fighters to grace the square circle in the past decade.
Honestly...I just don't get any of you people anymore. You say the most ignorant things & you make the most ridiculous points to support your ham handed arguements.
Often in the past...I've agreed with some of the things that the two of you have said...now I'm just fwockin ashamed that I did.

Oh give me a break. Sometimes we all reach when trying to make a point. You're acting like you've never badmouthed a fighter or questioned a fighter's record before. We've all said that different fighters are overrated or underrated before. If I started a post saying that I think Allan Green is the future of super middleweight, I'd get a million posts saying blah blah blah. That's the point of posting opinions. To get a consensus. It seems that the consensus is that I'm wrong. OK, I'll take the loss, I'll still believe ODLH was and is extremely overrated. I tried to prove it with logic but apparently the consensus says that my evidence is unfounded. Fine. But give me a break with that holier than thou stuff. No one is perfect and everyone believes different things.

Re: I'm sorry but ODLH is garbage!!!
I really dont care if you favour PFB over ODLH. However, saying ODLH is 'garbage' is probably the most fucked up thing I have ever read on any boxing website/forum.
