Ummm did anyone ever realize that getting punched in the face for maybe even 1 round might cause injuries? I'm pretty sure a case can be made to bring the 15 rounders back. All you have to do is sneak in the words "you'll make more money this way" and they'll bring it back faster than Tua showed the world the real john "the quiet man" ruiz.

Its the referee's job to stop a fight when it looks like its getting out of hand and again Some people drop dead during amateur fights and some retire after long pro careers without any long term injuries you can't know how each fighter is gonna react to the longer fights.

I am glad Howard Cosell left boxing to go to Football in 82 after being disgraced by the Holmes fight. He was all ego and just used boxiing to prove a point. I remember him saying he would not watch a boxing match again or commentate one and I thought, there is a guy using boxing to prove a point about his ego..

Could Buffer have just annouced the fight wrong. Nothing I've looked up shows this as a 15 rd fight, other then what Buffer said in the ring, we have all seen announcers annouce things wrong from weights and records to fighters nicknames. Seeing that he won the unified title in a 12 rounder with all sanctioning bodies involved I think Buffer said it wrong.

If the truth be known its all to do with TV schedules 12 rds fit in better. Theres been more accidends since the change than before percentage fight wise

Re: What ever happened to 15 round title fights?
Going sideways on this topic for a moment, i just wanna say that (Joe Cortez aside :-X) Referees are very keen to wave a fight of that there shouldn't really be any cause for concern.
Theres so many debatable 12 rounder decisions being given too.
Im sure a 15 rounder will allways produce one clear winner.

Exactly because there are an odd number of rounds. I'm telling you, bringing back 15 rounders would do wonders for the sport.

November 26, 1982 was the last 15 round Heavyweight Championship title fight. It was held at the Astrodome in Houston, Texas. The fight, between champion Larry Holmes and challenger Randall "Tex" Cobb was a mismatch from the beginning. While Cobb had fought Shavers, Dokes, Norton and other top ten fighters to reach this deserved shot at the title, he had no amateur career, and by the time he fought for the title, he had less than 80 ROUNDS of experience. That's right. Not 80 fights, but 80 rounds. Tex lost 15 out of 15 rounds, but was never knocked down during the fight. I wasn't a boxing fan at the time, but since I was in love with one of the fighters, I thought I should watch the match.
Boxing fans know Howard Cosell quit calling boxing because of this "brutal" fight, but what the fans didn't get to hear is Cosell riding in the elevator complaining about being away from his wife over the Thanksgiving Day holiday. Without missing a beat, Tex turned around and said to Cosell, "Yeah. Your wife phoned and thanked me."
In fairness to Cosell, the fight did appear to be unusually brutal, even for boxing. Tex was getting smashed left and right and was bloodied. It looked a lot worse than it was. Tex's first words after this fight were, "Let's party!" Even though it was the biggest lost in the history of championship fights, he considered it a win to have gone 15 rounds with Larry Holmes in his prime for the title.
The next morning, Larry Holmes came in the room and asked Tex to cut up his "eggies" for him because he thought he had broken his hands on Tex's head. Tex replied, "I can't help you Larry. I have to sip my eggies with a straw!"
Johnny Carson liked Tex's sense of humor, and invited Tex on the show. Tex would appear 8 times on the Carson show in subsequent years. On his first appearance, the producers of the film "Uncommon Valor" saw Tex on Carson, and wanted him immediately for the role of Sailor in their film. Tex went on to make many films, but is best remembered for his role in Raising Arizona as the evil biker/bounty hunter--the "Warthog from hell."
The smartest move he made, however, was marrying me. The stupidest move he ever made was leaving me for this chick named Janet who had purple hair with blue eyeshadow who played bass in her husband's band. I always hear from people how she totally runs and controls his life...a long way from the cowboy I met who stood up to Larry Holmes for 45 minutes without taking a step backwards. That's the Tex I try to remember. Happy anniversary baby. That day, you did good.

That was an awesome post. Did Tex Cobb beat Ernie Shavers then?

Re: What ever happened to 15 round title fights?
Also i think if fighters were more active they wouldn't have as many injuries. Think about it. If they fight more often, their body might actually adapt to the head trauma. If you take a long break then get in the ring your brain's not adjusted to take the trauma but if you take a shorter break it won't be such a shock for the brain. Now obviously if you've just got out of a war with someone a longer break would probably be better but im talking about after fights where you didn't really get hit much (or it ended in an early round). Then again i'm no brain doctor so i wouldn't know the details. I read a report where they said amateur boxers still had higher amounts of a fluid in their brain that denotes brain damage (or the breaking down of certain brain cells, im not exactly sure how they worded it) 3 months after a fights than a normal person. A glass of wine a day is good for the heart and brain. 20 beers once a month is hell on the liver and the previous two. Maybe they should do a study to see if fighting while having a higher than average (but not really high) amount of this chemical in your brain reduces the chances of getting a brain injury. I'm just saying its something to look into.

15 rounders are approximately 1hr and they would fit better if the station quit trying to make every bum in a ppv fight look like Rocky. "Oh he had a tough life filled with drugs and prison time". You think?! I thought he had a full scholarship from harvard but turned it down to get punched in the face for the rest of his life! ::**

Re: What ever happened to 15 round title fights?
Well what they should do is regulate the dosage for about... Hmm 20 Years to establish what the problem was (JOE CORTEZ!) then re- regulate the original dosage...
Or you could always bring back the 15 rounder ::**

It would do the sport alot of good if they brought it back. Less controversial draws and decisions, It would bring back the prestige of old school title fights, it could get some fans reinterested in the sport (in order to thoroughly do this some fights should be on basic cable), and like i said before if you fight thru 4 15 rounders or 5 12 rounders its the same amount of damage. In fact the 5 12 rounders would actually be worse because your opponent wouldn't be as tired while throwing the punches. Let's say (rough and probably generous estimate) that a heavyweight can throw his best hardest punches thru the first 5 rounds b4 fatigue starts to set in. Getting thru 60 rounds by way of the 15 rounders you have to go 20 rounds with a guys best punches. By way of going thru 60 rounds the 12 round way you'd have to go thru 25 rounds.

Re: What ever happened to 15 round title fights?
Also people fight alittle more aggressively in a 12 rounder as opposed to a 15 rounder. So eventho the fight is longer, the damage being done is less.

He was a famous boxing commentator for years - the voice of the sport in the US from the 60's onwards.
He was commentating on the Holmes v Tex Cobb 'fight', and was apparently sickened by the systematic and ruthless beating that Cobb absorbed for so long. he said it was barbaric and that he would never commentate a fight again, and he never has.
I suspect the truth of it is that he was aging and wanted more money, so the network told him to fuck off and terminated his contract. he then called the fight as if it was his choice to walk away to give himself a bit of dignity in leaving. Cobb himself was in the lift with him at a hotel the next day, and he said that all Cosell was doing was moaning about the travel and how he never saw his wife - he never mentioned this so-called life-changing fight to one of its chief protagonists.
That's what I heard, anyway. ???

Typical Bullshitter ::**
Actually, im suprised that Larry Merchant didnt walk out on Boxing after bieng "sickened" at the sight of the sytematic boxing clinic that Floyd exhibited. Citing that Boxing today was far too cute and pink.
Only to discuss with Floyd in the lift later that he had to leave boxing because after all the travelling, Larry was having trouble recalling were he lived and that also he was receiving complaints from HBO producers about him, claiming that he was smelling of wee. :-\ ;D
