Goood post but i disagree with you on your comments about the Americans being outraged , plenty of times British fighters have got the shit end of the stick Stateside and nobody has bothered their arse !!
American fans are much much more fickle British fans will support shit fighters to the bitter end in huge numbers whilst good British fighters couldnt sell out the front room .
Ricky Hatton being a good fighter is hugely popular but he was selling out the MEC way before he was world champion or had proved himself at anything near European Level .
I think we like the boy next door its often said that Brits prefer a plucky loser rather than a bad winner i think thats to a certain extent true but i think british fans like their sportsman to have a strain of humanity and humbleness we like the cheeky chappy a little too much .
I had my doubts on the way up about Hatton i thought he was hyped but i still liked him still watched all his fights compare him to Scott Harrison who won a world title in good style but never caught on with the Scottish public because everybody knew he was an absoloute arsehole and a nasty bit of work .
British fans though as you stated can be really embarrasing to be around their iggnorance and loyalty to their boy really pisses me off .
Case in point, Richard Williams on the way up turning heads looking good gets his shot at the Commenwealth title in my hometown against Tony Badea .
On the night its a pretty poor turnout but the fans who do turn out are Mainly Micheal Alldiss supporters ( Crawley Boy ) they make alot of noise get behind their boy fair enough he wins a routine 8 rounder .
I turned up to see the main event Richard Williams i go to the toilet come back and the arena is all but empty except for a a few die hards and 50 of Richards supporters .
Richard ends up putting on a clinic destroys his man and wins in 3 whilst Micheal Alldiss fans are getting pissed in the bar and fighting .
That about sums it up.
Brit fans will back their boy but sometimes i think they have no idea what their watching .

We'll never nail this for gospel will we? ;D
Zale was of Polish extraction and i belive fought out of the Steel city of Pitsburg and delivered the best KO possibly i have ever seen against Rocky Graziano (got it on tape) Right to the body then a killer left hook to the head.
Love that KO.

Excuse me pay attention to what ? Im feeling alittle lost what did i repeat ?
I made points about the British in general that Ryamman didnt make so perhaps you could elaborate on what i twisted and should pay attention to!!
The whole post was for the most part dedicated to our approach to sport i didnt comment on the negativity of British fight fans towards opponents as a whole what i was trying to say is that British fight fans are sometimes blinded by their love for their own fighter !!
I didnt mention anything about spitting or screaming , i mentioned once about about iggnorance towards opponents which can be a variety of things !!!
It can mean a lack of knowlage about a good fighter or it can be outright hostility
I also came up with a perfectly good anecdote that i thought emphasised my point well !!!
I dont see any reason for you to start with the Irony and name calling unless
A , You are a dickhead
B , You fancy me and crave my attention .
Make a point Daxx there's a good widdle boy .

It's nothing to do with ignorance, its just that as one of the richest nations in the world we are obviously only interested in other first world nations, ones that actually matter on a world stage.
If you had oil or nuclear weapons we would join the Americans in invading you but until then you are kind of irrelevent to global society as a whole.
No offense

we have their money, we have their laws we just haven't become a state as of yet!!
Class dismissed ;D

Well, if the Falkland Islands had about 4 million people a vast majority of whom are bilingual.... if they were one of the premier global pharmaceutical manufacturing centers in the world.... if they boasted more boxing world champions in their history per capita than any other nation in the world... if they had one of the better baseball teams in the international scene.... if they were the rum-producing capital of the world and boasted some of the best "salsa" bands around.... and if they had one of the more renowned engineering schools, from which entities such as NASA among others recruit every single year......
Yeah, I guess the Falklands would be to England what Puerto Rico is to the U.S.
;)

Re: Who are the best boxing fans in the world?
Hey - you forget the Danes, there are even a few on this site who are big fans of their boy Kessler. If you ignore Royal, the rest of them seem OK?
-
Re: Who are the best boxing fans in the world?
I think Germany could do with a mention here, the atmosphere at fights might be a lot more civilized and polite than a drunken british crowd but they really love their fighting, the viewing figures Klitschko's get are massive, and even shit fighters like Sven Ottke got massive audiences. Thats what I call dedication.
-
Re: Who are the best boxing fans in the world?
The best fans are those who want 20 Ringside tickets
-
The best fight fans are
Not Americans thats for sure. (Im American) . Man how about those Brits cheering and singing for Hatton this weekend. That was awesome. Im jealous. The fact that it was in the states really made it something . (Hattons trunks were cool)
I work at a company of over 100 people and not one person can talk about boxing with me. I only know 2 paople at all that are into it enough to talk about it with me. Most Americans have never heard of Shane Mosley, Bernard Hopkins or Winky Wright. Much less Joe C. and Ricky Hatton. I dont get it.?? Thank God for this Board !!
A lot of Americans know the older guys or at least have heard of ,Rocky Marciano , Sugar Ray Lenard, Thomas Herns and Duran.
What happened in the last 20 or 30 years to the American boxing fan ? Is it the fact that you never hear about it on the regular sports portion of the news or read about it in the paper? Or is it the lack of an American Heavy weight that has the skill ,chin and power to thrill? Dont tell me its the MMA or Ultimate fighting or any of that because this started way before that.

Re: The best fight fans are
yep its sad but true, you could ask the average person on the street here in the UK to name a current Champ of the World and you would be lucky to get more than Hatton and Calzaghe's name...
-
Re: The best fight fans are
Depends on the region really,Detroit,Philly, here in WV are all rabid for it

Thats good to know. I would imagine Philly would, its a fight town ,but I live near Richmond VA and its all Nascar . I can hear the cars going around the track from my house but I have no real intrest in it.
Boxing is really the only sport Im into.

Cant stand NASCAR,2 hours of watching guys make a left turn does nothing for me.Oh well to each their own
Interesting thought,is an area a good fight area because of having produced big names,or does it produce good fighters because its a good fight area?
-
Re: The best fight fans are
Im from the UK and I have problems talking to people about the sport. The UK isnt great for boxing, trust me
and Goood fight areas make good fighters with a few acceptions
-
Re: The best fight fans are
I know what you Sugar....I don't think that Britain probably has many more good fight fans than any other country, but Manchester is a proper fight city, and guys like Hatton who've kept their feeton the ground and still mix with the regular fans promote a loyalty that you wouldn't get with guys who live in their flash houses and leave their old neighbourhoods.
-
Re: The best fight fans are
Manchester is a true boxing city and the boxers which they produce are all down to earth kids ;D
