Re: Why Do People Think Tyson Is Unbeatable ??
Tyson could not stop Ali.. He would have a hard time landing a punch on him. Tyson when he was young would make it hard for Ali because of his energy, but later Mike slowed down more and more and he became easier to hit for guys.
-
Re: Why Do People Think Tyson Is Unbeatable ??
....people who blame Tyson's downfall on just losing D'Mato and Jacobs are dillusional!
He was always a thug, he had mental instability, and he just couldn't handle authority....those make for a tough out of the ring experience.
Joe Frazier was only stopped by George Foreman (twice) and Muhammed Ali (once) and both times he took unbelieveable punishment....Smokin Joe's high volume of punches would really help him vs Tyson
-
Re: Why Do People Think Tyson Is Unbeatable ??
Answer to the thread:becuase when he was mentally stable, whe he had a stable life in and out of the ring,he was just that, unstoppable. Never has a HW been combined with such a combination of power, speed, skills and just sheer ferocity. His defence was deceptively good and he was just a monster, To survive 12 rounds with a prime Tyson was viewed as a success for his opponent and a failure for Mike. Hell, fighters would go into the ring with the mentality that surviving was
"winning" in an essence! Few HW have had that impact before.
The only legendary HWs that would give him problems would be the boxers, the Ali's etc and may be the feeaks of nature like Foreman although Mike would have the upper hand on the inside,Foreman had possibly the longest loopiest punches I have ver seen! Mike would decimate the rest.
Go and watch some Tyson fights of him in his prime then watch the older HW and spot the differences. And Mikes uppercuts were possibly the most brutal punches in the histyory of boxing. His hooks were astonishing, short, compact yet ridiculously powerful,he had a jab,he had it all dammit. Een head movement!
Tyons beat all the HW around at this time. Who he did he not beat whom he could have beaten? Lewis etc clearly didn't want to fight him! Who can blame them? Lennox waited for Tyson to get old then fight him ;)
And to say Tyson couldn't handle authority are correct..but only after Cus passed. Under Cus,he was learning and achieving.

Fair enough man,and honestly,I don't think he was an ATG or anything like that but when he was on top form and mentally stable,he was a force of destruction. If you don't see that then you are missing something. Whos' your fave HW Marciano>?

Gamo , about your Lennox waiting for Tyson to get old comment, it is a pretty well known fact I think that Tysons camp paid Lennox alot of step aside money so Tyson didn;t have to fight him when they were both in their primes (well , when lennox was "prime" could be debated , but prime mike anyway)

Well, that was one of the biggest upset in boxing history.
That was also the beginning of Tyson's downfall.
It was the first time he fought somebody who could take a serious punch, who had reach
Tyson's whole career up to them had been carefully massaged.Theres a reason he didnt fight Witherspoon
This is a fine point Mr Smith spoiled it for us by a freak result beating Tim he was the only guy during the unification series who had a chance with Tyson :(

Re: Why Do People Think Tyson Is Unbeatable ??
Basically i believe King ruined Tyson Tyson was to young when champ mentally to look after himself he needed Jacobs and D'mato to look after him King moved in as soon as Jacobs had died and just ruined him

Prime Tyson has a very good chance of beating all of them. Styles wise Foreman is the one that worries me the most though....

I'd like to believe it's Sonny Liston who would be his match.

Louis beat A TON of fighters....25 title defenses vs anyone and everyone, Tyson's division was almost as weak and he couldn't even come close to that!
Marciano's style was awkward and despite of his lackluster technical skills he could land what he wanted to when he wanted to do it
Also just a clarification I said they would have a good chance vs Tyson....those guys were GREATS they'd have a good chance vs pretty much anyone
Yes Holmes made mistakes everyone does but he was fantastic boxer in his prime Ali had better speed and footwork than Holmes but stamina chin and power is about the same imo but i believe Holmes would have better chance than Rocky and Dempsey and even Louis because Louis was to flatfooted Rocky and Dempsey were to easy to hit and are also flatfooted i just don't see them beating Tyson in all honesty Lyle.
Its just a shame Holmes didn't have Ali's competition would of been great to have seen him in early 70s against the greats.
Well IMO Norton beat Ali 2-1 and well, Holmes beat Norton with one arm ;)
It took Holyfield 12 rounds to deal with Holmes yet he dispatched Tyson inside the distance. That means something to me.
It means Holmes was a wiley, cagey mofo when he wanted to be. In his pirme, sharp n powerfull he would of ruined Tyson over 12 rounds.
'Just ask Buster Douglas' ;D
I like Tyson against alot of these fighters mentioned. Especially the older generation (Pre '65). Size issues n all that.
For me, to be a Tyson beater you have to be big. You have to be 1st and you have to be able to spoil.
Lewis & Holmes defo
Bowe & Ali probably
Foreman maybe
The rest. Phh! No way mate ;)

Yea agreed Jim people seem to forget that Holmes had bad bicep or tricep injury can't quite remember which it was but anyway he beat Norton with one arm more convincing than Ali ever did forgetting the bullshit close sd if people watch the fight Norton took the first round Holmes then won next 7 or 8 easy as pie then Norton come back winning about 5 on the trot if i remember then he for certain lost 13th or 14th round without question and 15th round was too close to call but Holmes won by atleast 2 rounds with one arm yet Ali even when he beat Norton in 2nd fight which is only one i think he won he done it by no more than 1 round and other fights Norton won imo and alot of people think so aswell really Ali could of had about 8 losses on his record and Holmes would of beat Tyson aswell glad im not alone on this one :coolclick: jim.

yea thanks mate to be honest i didn't really know much about Holmes until i ordered my Holmes career set in early 2006 and now im his biggest fan i like fighters from all different eras and believe it or not even though Tyson isn't my favorite fighter i still like putting some Tyson fights on sometimes to watch some exciting kos because even though i don't like him much still don't mean i don't enjoy his awesome kos.

Re: Why Do People Think Tyson Is Unbeatable ??
Im a fan of Holmes for two-fold reasons
First off,I loved watching him as a boxer, the Cooney fight is one of my faves all time
Secondly
I grew up very near Larry's home town of Easton PA
In the 70s when his career first started taking off,Easton was a freaking wasteland
Today, its actually quaint and kind of touristy
Because Larry Holmes poured tons of cash in to it,trying to make life better for the people where he grew up.

The reason a lot of people think Tyson was unbeatable was in short coz he hit so hard.
A lot of peolpe think that all boxing is ,is hit the opponent as hard as you can. They dont realise the skill involved.

Re: Why Do People Think Tyson Is Unbeatable ??
let's not get things all twisted here, Mike Tyson was a very good boxer, youngest heavyweight champ in the history of the sport and he broke Marciano's KO record.
Mike Tyson had a very good offense and a very good defense
HOWEVER
The STYLE in which Mike Tyson fought was very beatable....look at Cus D'Amato's other fighters, same style, and they get beat in similar fashion.
The style was HORRIBLE vs the same people it was supposed to work against. It worked very well against SOME tall lanky fighters and vs others it didn't work at all. Also pressure fighters like Holyfield did well vs that style.
Mike Tyson was a very good fighter and he beat a lot of decent competition but not alot of GREAT competition. I think his style, his heart, and his psyche would make him vulnerable vs the greatest heavyweight of all-time no matter what their size
-
Re: Why Do People Think Tyson Is Unbeatable ??
i agree with every thing EL-GAMO said ;)
like him or not, tyson is an ATG and future HOFer.
leaving aside events away from the ring, in his prime, tyson must be viewed as a truly exceptional champion, A colosous who dominated his era in devastating fashion. i believe if tyson's agression and power could have been properly harnessed and controlled, he would have been the greatest off them all 8)

Re: Why Do People Think Tyson Is Unbeatable ??
I haven't read all of this thread, but just to say ICECOLD you weren't even born when Tyson was in his prime, you may have caught some fights on tape, but you weren't there and you cannot possible appreciate him fully
Hardly ever has there been a really great Heavyweight division!! Tyson's division was better than your idol Holmes' I mean those 7 yeras 1978 - 1985 were fooking awful, the likes of John Tate, Mike Weaver and Gerry Coetzer being champions. The only really great eras were early seventies and early nineties. Johndon, Dempsey, Liston Marciano & Holmes did not fight in any better company than Tyson in his prime!!
If he was so ordinary why did he have more interest then any fighter since Ali and no fighter since himself?? And it wasn't coz of his life out of the ring, becuase up to 88-89 his fame was for boxing not raping!
He was a complete wreck against Douglas and many many people claim he was on drugs, after that he went to prison for what 3 or 4 years, how could he ever come vack from that. So pretty much after Spinks Tyson was a fading force. But mark my words if he retired after the Spinks fight everybody who follows boxing including all boxing writers in the world would have Tyson top 5 atleast of all time, most would have him 1 or 2. If you ask the same people now most wouldn't have him top 10. This is due to all of our short terms memories being of his demise, but primes are about primes, however short thoser primes may be, and 1986 -1988 Mike Tyson is one of the greatest heavyweights in history, no doubt in my mind!!! And anybody who thinks he was just a puncher should watch some of the footage of him watching the old greats and adapting their styles, he had virtually every tool in the box!!
End of
How was that Miles old son
