Re: It's On!!! Pavlik Vs Taylor(September 29, 2007)Poll
Finally, a true Middleweight will show Jermaine Taylor what it means to actually fight like a champion!!! I thought his style was too straight up for Miranda, but his agression and size overcame all else. Please remember NO ONE ELSE jt has faced is as big as Pavlik. Also, I will have to check this, but didn't Pavlik already beat him in the amateurs?
Either way, I can't wait to see this fight!

If the fight goes the distance Taylor on account of having bought two of the judges has already won on two card 115-113. The independent judge who hasn't been bought will score the fight fairly and it will read something like 120 -109 Pavlik so a split decision win for Taylor then.........
Bilbo's got it right on time! For those who say that Taylor ducks no one, please remember that he won all FOUR belts from Hopkins, but then REFUSED to fight Abraham (who Miranda fought) and Sturm (who many think beat DLH). He gave up those two belts, then went from 'hungry' to 'biggest payday.' The Winky fight was not a mandatory, but it would have been since Winky was the #1 for BOTH of his belts. Personally, I like all three of them over Taylor in a fight.
For those who are in the UK, please know that DiBella (promoter) and HBO have a 'kissin' cousins' relationship (via Trinidad/Hopkins days), and the rest was outlined by Bilbo. Clearly, it's more complex than that, but you have to think it odd that Bernard was a small Mwt who fought real guys, and Jermaine is a full Mwt who only now is fighting someone his size.

Re: It's On!!! Pavlik Vs Taylor(September 29, 2007)Poll
JT beat Pavlik in the Olympic trials by points. Kelly will be the first to admit that he lost but had the chance to win if he would have fought like he was trained. Kelly was 17 and JT was 21 at the time. That made a big difference then. Now Kelly has developed his power a lot and his skills a little more. I personally can't wait for the fight and IMO Pavlik win by KO by round 8.

Thx Dibbs... I like the prediction, because he's gonna have to KO Taylor. It will be a cold day in hell before
1. Taylor loses a decision in a DiBella promotion, or
2. Taylor fights outside of DiBella promotion, which is why he wouldn't go to Germany.

Abraham said he needed more time before he faced Taylor. And Strum turned down $750,000 to fight Taylor. So Taylor fought Wright instead. Who's a better fighter than both Abraham and Strum. Taylor has ducked no one.

That may be the fact, and if so, then I stand corrected (I hope you didn't get that price from DiBella), but you don't lose your belt because the other guy is not ready.

The IBF stripped Taylor of the title cause he rematched Bernard Hopkins instead of facing his mandatory which was Sam Soliman. The IBF sets up Sam Soliman-Kingsley Ikeke for the title. But Soliman opts out of the fight to take a bigger money fight against Winky Wright. So the IBF made Abraham-Ikeke. Which is how Abraham became champion.

Violent Demise- I gotta stand down on this one. You really got the history, while I thought the stripping took place after the rematch. You got it straight, so I stand corrected.
But Taylor's still gonna get KTFO!
Peace!

Re: It's On!!! Pavlik Vs Taylor(September 29, 2007)Poll
I love Pavlik, straight punches and he has a wide arsenal. If you look at the flaws and advantages, it's hard not to pick Pavlik.
Pavlik's biggest asset is his pinpoint punching, stalking style and his tremendous power.
Taylor's biggest flaws are his inability to control the ring and his inactivity levels on the backfoot and walking forward versus Spinks.
But it's more then that, don't think we've seen the best Jermain Taylor. I mean he was such an explosive fighter. At least I think he was, then he hung with Hopkins. Wright let him off the hook a bit by getting flatfooted to often in that fight and Taylor got a shady draw.
Now Taylor has been challenged by Steward. Steward has done this before. He absolutely ripped Lennox Lewis to pieces after the McCall loss, saying that even before the loss, nobody was excited for Lewis and that he was destined to be a waste of talent. I'm guessing he did it because he knew Lewis would respond. Now he's gone on the assault against Taylor. Maybe he knows Taylor can rise to the occasion.
It was hard to find many people not excited about Taylor before he faced Hopkins, now people are waiting for him to be knocked off his stool. But the fact remains, he's still the champ and still has 36 rounds with 2 of the 10 best fighters on the planet. And no official losses to show for it. That has to say something.
But I don't think he has enough to keep Pavlik off him for this one. Pavlik is absolutely relentless and he is relentless from the outside which makes him hard to control with a jab, especially with a jab that hasn't been rendered effective for quite some time. I think Pavlik wins a decision in a good fight.
I'm going to go back and forth on this one a lot.
-
Re: It's On!!! Pavlik Vs Taylor(September 29, 2007)Poll
Also, Taylor has got to be given credit. Hate him for what he's done in the ring, but Miranda didn't deserve a shot at Taylor anymore then Mora did and I said that before the Pavlik bout too.
Taylor REALLY impressed me when he went against what his manager wanted for him and took a fight with Winky. As much as that fight made me lose sleep, that was a cool thing for Taylor to do and outside the ring I absolutely love the guy. And I think this could be SUCH a big fight if it was marketed correctly and on network TV, it just makes me sad that it will end up an HBO footnote like Taylor - Wright.
The whiteboy from Youngstown, Ohio who does nothing but get in the ring and fight like a throwback fighter would versus the Arkansas born Olympian who rides ATVs and enters to Lynyrd Skynyrd. I mean it's just such a compelling matchup in the ring and out, yet most won't know about it.
Pavlik could be a legitimate great white hope, but he won't be because the fight will probably be stuck on HBO. If there was one fight I could put on ABC out of all the fights this year, it would be this.
-
Re: It's On!!! Pavlik Vs Taylor(September 29, 2007)Poll
never thought about it like this, but it is that kind of throwback classic bout.

Re: It's On!!! Pavlik Vs Taylor(September 29, 2007)Poll
Another excellent match up made for what has been an awesome year for boxing fans imo. I favour Kelly in this BUT JT has not really been motivated for a fight for a while, possibly since the Winky fight. Against Spinks,he was fighting a slick mover and v Ouma,he gassed and underestimated Kassim.
Kelly is going to be a standing target so this will give JT more options. The most important punch in this fight is JT's jab. He NEEDS it to be firing on all cylinders, something which it has not done since before the first B Hop fight. JT needs to use some slight lateral movement too. Pavlik is a monster,a power punching wrecking machine BUT he has feet really really firmly entrenched in the canvas. I think the jab and lots of lateral movement will prevent him from being able to settle.
Having said that,if JT does not use the jab,and if he gets gassed, which as we all know,he is prone to doing,Pavlike could catch up to him in the middle to late rounds. I cannot envisage JT standing toe to toe for the entirety of this bout because I don't think he puts his punches together as well as Kelly, nor does he have the stamina or power to match Pavlik.
JT has a alot more to do then Pavlik,so I'll go for Pavlik but I think people will be suprised that the fight will be alot closer than they imagined.

european dates are confusing eventho they are actually increasing units of time (Day/Month/Year as opposed to the american and always backwards like with everything else Month/day/year).
Anyway as i've said before, september is becoming a few good month for the sport. You really can't say taylor has ducked anybody and this promises to be a decent fight.

I still hope Pavlik puts the whuppin' on him.

His right hand is a flashy "wow" punch but is it really that hard of a punch? Who has Taylor actually knocked out? A lot of his stoppages are like the Bunema/Marquez stoppages, the other guy was getting beat up but they weren't out on their feet or anything. I can't think of many fights where he showed big time power, maybe against Daniel Edouard and that Colombian journeyman he fought on his HBO debut.
Its no shame to not stop or even not hurt Winky or Bernard, but he couldn't even bother two tiny jr. middles who've been hurt badly before. His power has got to be questioned.

Re: It's On!!! Pavlik Vs Taylor(September 29, 2007)Poll
When I watch JT I see a good fighter that often wins due to being a huge middleweight and a phenomenal athletic specimen not a great fighter...Pavlik has yet to show he is a great fighter either, but I think he will either bring out a great fighter in JT or show us that Taylor is not in that league. My money is that he KOs JT somwhere between the 7th and 10th round.
-
Re: It's On!!! Pavlik Vs Taylor(September 29, 2007)Poll
Even tho pavlik seems rougher around the edges I just think pavlik wants this more than taylor, taylor's heart just doesn't seem to be in boxing. I mean he went 1-1-1 imo with 2 great fighters in winky and b hop, but then he couldn't get rid of ouma, nor clearly beat spinks...maybe pavlik will bring the best out of taylor and we'll have a great fight, but I think it'll be more likely pavlik pushing taylor back, getting hit while doing so but absorbing the punches, and then somewhere later in the fight he'll ko taylor.
-
Re: It's On!!! Pavlik Vs Taylor(September 29, 2007)Poll
I think what makes this fight so compelling to me is that Pavlik will be the first guy to come forward at Jermain Taylor not named Winky Wright, who is pretty much impossible to impress against.
We know Pavlik can take punches, Miranda had a lot of success with that telegraphed right hand even in the seventh round that Pavlik finished him in. I know Taylor doesn't have great power, but he is a Manny Steward fighter, he has to know a thing or two about timing even if he hasn't showed it.
Just a fascinating fight really, I have to agree with everyone who says that Pavlik will bring out the best in Taylor yet I still feel compelled to pick Pavlik. Either way, huge fight for both guys as it will be a huge win for either. Pavlik, obviously, he becomes middleweight champion of the world. Taylor hasn't faced this type of opposition and his reign as champion has been slandered constantly, fairly and unfairly.
Can't wait for this one.

Taylor's stock is dropping........ Pavlik's stock is rising. It's a question of whether the two trajectories have crossed, and by how much.

Another thing is Taylor isnt really as smart of a boxer as everyone thinks. When dose he ever fake a punch to draw a smaller opponet into commiting. He didnt with Spinks and he didnt with Ouma. People but more generally the judges give hium more credit than he deserves. He is the worst 160 champ since Tiger years ago.

Pavlik. Let's write letters to the Canton, Akron, Pittsburgh and
Cleveland Newspapers so that this great local story is covered every

Jermain Taylor is a rare and historic champion in that he beat a
champion (Bernard Hopkins) that collected all 4 of the major world
titles. Jermain Taylor has not been beaten since. Therefor he is
considered the undisputed middleweight champion of the world and now
Kelly Pavlik is scheduled to fight for his crown.
