Shit happens. Sturm's had a bad run of late but I aint bailing out on him just for that. Plenty of fighters have issues through out their careers. Win, lose, or draw Sturm's a great boxer & that's all that counts to me.
You don't have to remain undefeated for me to be a fan.
Re: JohnnyKickAss Rd. by Rd. of the Sturm vs. Griffin fight
FightNews made it sound like a pretty exciting fight. Nothing wrong with that.
I don't have a huge problem with him pulling out a draw if it was legit & the fighter was up for the bout...I aint gonna lie & say that I'm totally satisfied with a draw because I would much rather have seen him win.
Sturm retains WBA middleweight title with draw against Griffin!

WBA middleweight champion Felix Sturm (28-2-1, 12 KOs) retained his world title with a twelve round draw with mandatory challenger Randy Griffin (24-1-3, 12 KOs) in a very tough fight on Saturday night at the Gerry Weber Stadion in Halle/Westfalen, Germany. Sturm had a good first round, landing sharp jabs and a nice uppercut. Griffin was aggressive, but had problems getting past Sturm's peek-a-boo defense. Griffin upped the pressure in round two and both fighters landed good punches, Sturm landing a big right near the end of the round. The bout continued at a very high level in round three, with Sturm landing the cleaner punches. Good two-way action in rounds four and five. Griffin amped up the attack in the sixth, forcing Sturm to the ropes several times. Another strong round for Griffin in the seventh. What had been somewhat of a slugfest turned into a boxing match in rounds eight through ten with Sturm and Griffin staying in the middle of the ring demonstrating their technical skills. Griffin was busier in round eleven, while Sturm landed the cleaner punches. Both fighters needed round twelfth and dug down deep with a tired Sturm ending with a late flurry. Scores were 114-114, 117-114 Griffin, 115-114 Sturm.
Just because he pulled out a draw doesn't automatically equate to Sturm being a lost cause as a fighter or a champion.
I think that he's still got some good rounds left in him & he has proven that he's worthy of his place in the middleweight division.
Re: JohnnyKickAss Rd. by Rd. of the Sturm vs. Griffin fight
Wacko is right...the only thing one could say is that Sturm should have beaten someone with
Griffins record, but Griffin was tough taking what Sturm gave, while having a very high punch
output himself, pressuring Sturm throughout the whole fight...Sturm was the far more effective
boxer and Griffin was busier...
Sturm hid behind his defense trying to counter while Griffin should punch himself out...
The plan didn't work, cause Griffin didn't really tire and Sturm didn't do enough...it was
enough for a draw... I had Sturm winning, but close...
Sturm had a bad night nothing more... ;)

I guess cause I just expected more from him then a draw.
I was hoping to see him finish this one off with a TKO.
Re: JohnnyKickAss Rd. by Rd. of the Sturm vs. Griffin fight
Maybe Randy Griffin is a lot better then people give him credit?
Remember when Joshua Clottey had that real tough fight not too long ago and people wrote him off(it was against a guy who was low blowing him) but it turns out that guy was better then credit was given and is a good prospect too?
Re: JohnnyKickAss Rd. by Rd. of the Sturm vs. Griffin fight
CC for the RBR my man. I've never been too keen on Sturm and don't think I ever will be. He looked good v Oscar but that's all. A decent fighter at best.

I agree Gamo.
I remember when BCD was fighting as a Middleweight I couldn't wait for the day that he and Sturm fought. Wacks and I used to go back and forth about that potential fight. Wacks, guess now we know how it would have gone. :D
Re: JohnnyKickAss Rd. by Rd. of the Sturm vs. Griffin fight
I was certain that Sturm was gonna win a UD, my joker pick. >:mad
I'm not a fan, I'm not trying to shit on the guy either but you have to start to wonder about a guy who got TKO'd by Castilliejo and takes a draw against Griffin. Doesn't mean he's a bum but elite fighters should be getting better results than that.
Re: JohnnyKickAss Rd. by Rd. of the Sturm vs. Griffin fight
I still think the guy can raise his game, at the minute it seems life is too easy for him, you can't make yourself afraid, he needs to go out of his comfort zone and fight in the US again, Oscar brought the best outta him, he needs to come and fight Mora or something for a payday.

Thanks for your thoughts... :coolclick: all of you...
And I think Sturm had just a little conditioning problem in that fight...

Both sides are talking rematch after the entertaining and dramatic twelve round draw between WBA middleweight champion Felix Sturm and mandatory challenger Randy Griffin. Here's what they had to say at the post fight press conference...
Felix Sturm: That was a great fight from both of us. We gave everything and showed our technical skills. I have seen myself with two rounds ahead on the scorecards as I had the clearer and better punches. This was a thrillig and emotional fight. We have to have a rematch. That would be very important for the boxing business. I'm ready for a rematch wherever it can be realized. Randy deserves it, he is a great boxer.
Randy Griffin: It was a great fight and I'm not disappointed, although I thought I had won. I would really like to come back for a rematch to Germany.
Sturm's Promoter Klaus-Peter Kohl: I haven't seen such a dramatic fight in a long time, it was great. I'm happy about the ending although it was a draw. Felix is still the champion. The last two rounds were the best ones I have ever seen of him. There are fights when the call for a rematch is very high. This is a case here.
Sturm's trainer Michael Timm: What a fight! We had to wait until the final bell. An incredible performace of Felix, the way he came back in the last rounds.

You beat me to it. I started a thread about this earlier.
What hits me is that people are so eager to write Sturm off. I suppose that if you don't have anything invested in a fighter as a fan then it's easy not to stick with him. I for one think that Sturm is as good for boxing as he is a fighter.
It's very rare that you have a champ that calls for a rematch...that's a odd thing there.
I'd love for Sturm to come out & blast Griffin out of the ring...but apparently he's no walk in the park.
Win, lose, or draw...I will continue to believe in Sturm to the day that he either retires or get's retired.

Re: JohnnyKickAss Rd. by Rd. of the Sturm vs. Griffin fight
Whilst I applaud the fact Sturm said there should be a rematch, still does not change the fact that he should be beating B lever fighters if he is serious about being an elite fighter. I'm just not impressed but he's young,he has time. Let's not forget though, didnt he turn down fights with Abraham and Taylor? Those kinds of oppertunities seldom come around twice.
Re: JohnnyKickAss Rd. by Rd. of the Sturm vs. Griffin fight
Alright...a job well done once againt babe.
Gonna take the sticky off & toss up the DRBR for a week of debating.
Cheers & :coolclick: for the effort.
