Based on what?
Cotto COULD eventually prove to be the better fighter. I don't see how anyone could say he's clearly better yet.
I think that he's far more dynamic than Tito ever was.
Based on performances against Judah & Mosley to only name a couple of players.
More dynamic than Tito's performances at 147, his fight with Vargas at 154, and his destruction of Joppy at 160?
As I said before...I think that Cotto's far more superior at this moment...& Cotto's still improving & far from his peak.
Cotto has only just arrived at 147...so as I stated...at this moment...I consider him to be the better boxer based on what he's already done. Yes.
Haven't see him at either one of those weights...unless you factor in what he undiciplinly weighed against Corley.
I honestly don't believe that Cotto would be really effective at 160lbs...but neither was Tito.
I just think that Cotto's a hell of a lot more well rounded & if he get's in with a skilled boxer, like he did with Mosley, he won't get pressed like a pair of cotton slacks as Trinidad did against Wright...who owned him with a jab & the same 1-2 combo all night long. Nor do I feel that he will buckled under the pressure like a belt as he did against Hopkins.
Cotto has been thrown in with some speedy skilled boxers & has surprised even his most debdicated fans...as I am proud to admit.
While it may be hard for you to see what I am trying to get at...it's just under the surface...one that Cotto has yet to even scratch...but it's there. Plain to see.
Cotto can, has, & will be great.
OK, it's probably best that we agree to disagree. Because while I'll agree that Cotto has the potential to get better (and be better than Tito), I just do not see how he can, at his point in his career, already be considered a better fighter than someone (Tito) who will be a first-ballot Hall of Famer.
He doesn't mean he has accomplished more than Tito he means,
he think's Cotto has more arrange of skills than Tito had, And he is less 1 dimensional.
And that's a highly debateable a point.
Regardless, in his original post, he said Cotto was "better." When you say someone is better, then you're talking about accomplishment, in one way or another.
Do you think Zab Judah and a 36 year old Mosley would have fared better against a prime 147 pound Tito than they did against a prime 147 pound Cotto? I don't.
Regardless, in his original post, he said Cotto was "better." When you say someone is better, then you're talking about accomplishment, in one way or another.
He wasn't though, he never said he thought Cotto has achieved more than Tito. He was basically saying Cotto has more of a arrange of skills than Tito has.
Well then I would be interested to see his answer to the question I posed before:
Do you think Zab Judah and a 36 year old Mosley would have fared better against a prime 147 pound Tito than they did against a prime 147 pound Cotto?
Because if Cotto is better and has a wider array of skills, then the answer should be Yes. I say no.
I agree with u mate. Prime Trinidad would destroy judah within 5, and beat a 36 yr old mosely much easier than Cotto. Not very often Wacko is wrong, but in his own words i think he is looking thru rose coloured glasses at Cotto.
Prime trinidad at 147 would ko Cotto imo.
Re: Can Cotto Be As Good As Felix Trinidad Was ??
Had you asked me a year or so ago my answer would have been straight forward and simple...No.
However in the past year the cotto machine has impressed me to the extent that i have become completely enthralled by him...
His handling of Zab was only equalled by Mayweathers dominace of Judah.
His beating of Mosely was the equivalnet of the Wright fights....
And his fight against Torres will, linger in memory forever...I thought he was vulnerable then and ripe for the taking!!!
Yet he advances and improves, he got 11 rounds expierience from Judah and 12 from Mosely...I feel that the Cotto we se now is not the finished article and in actuality he will be better than Trinidad in the future.

Totally disagree Wright beat Mosley quite comfortably both times by atleast 4 rounds. In many peoples eyes Cotto vs Mosley was a draw or no more than 1 point in it either way.

Had you asked me to elaborate I would have explained that I felt Cotto's win was similar to the wright fights in the context that Cotto appeared untroubled by Shanes power and speed and walked in to connect with his own more telling blows.

Wright was much too big for Mosley and backed him up all night it was the opposite in the Cotto fight.
Re: Can Cotto Be As Good As Felix Trinidad Was ??
He could be better and he has the potential to be bigger.
He has a bit of a personality problem but so did Tito at first. At least Cotto is working on it. He is learning english and getting a bit bolder on his interviews.
Like Tito, he is coming up in a great era for the 147lb division. Unlike Tito, there is no big name heavyweight stealing all the limelight like Tyson was doing to pretty much everyone under 200lbs.
He might be the best fighter in the best division of his time. Time will tell if this is true or not.
He has a bit more to go, he is not there just yet. I say this for two reasons. One, he has yet to be The Champ in any one division. Tito was The Champ at 147 and 154. Two, believe it or not, Cotto has yet to beat a defending champion. Both of his titles were vacant at the time he won them. This means he has yet to fight a champion. This might mean a lot to some and it might mean little to others but I think it is significant.
All that said, in a one to one, prime for prime welterweight fight, I don't think he could ever beat Tito. You could argue that he is an all around better boxer, he is more dynamic, he has not yet reached his prime, etc., etc. Bottom line, put these two guys in the ring together and I can only see one outcome and that is Tito by brutal KO in the mid to late rounds.

They fight was only one division up against a guy not reknowned for strength, power or even attritional punching.
Just because Cotto moved backward doesn't mean he was at all affected by Mosely's punches.

The size difference was major Winky was naturally much stronger and bigger than Mosley and backed him up all night.
I just think there two completely different fight's plus Winky was much more dominant against Mosley.

Totally disagree ICE. I was at the Cotto-Mosley fight and everyone around me, even the Shane fans were pretty convinced it was unanimous for Cotto. I didn't think there was any doubt. Mosley got outboxed.

Cotto was landing his jab with consistancy while Mosley didn't have one!
Totally agree

Have you rewatched it on TV ??

Don't agree that the size differential was that major. And as everyone knows Winky is not a power puncher by any means.
As far as dominance goes, Cotto did what he had to do, he knew he was beating Mosely and didn exert himself in case Mosely rallied late. He did what he had to do and impressively.
Re: Can Cotto Be As Good As Felix Trinidad Was ??

He doesn't have to be power puncher, the size was still a major factor it was natural Lightweight vs Natural Lightmiddleweight who had been at Lightmiddleweight for his entire career it makes a difference.

A fighter climbs weight he anticipates a different level of power. He prepares for this level of power and going into the fight he is expected to be able to deal with this change.
In this situation the hike in power was not all that dramatic as it was Winky Wright who is a boxer famed for slicknes rathger than strength and sports a record of 56 fights with only 25 by stoppage.
power didn bother him in the fight preceeding that when he fought a much more formidable puncher in Oscar De la Hoya

Sorry to butt in, but what the hell are you guys arguing about again. I'm lost....
Re: Can Cotto Be As Good As Felix Trinidad Was ??
Can he be as good-hell yes. Is he as good now? Hell no. He has a LONG way to go before he can be compared to Felix. I don't care about multiple weight titles etc,its who you fight in those weights. Tito fought the best of the best and annihilated most of them. Cotto's getting there, but not there yet,no way.
As for skills,I don't see where all this "Tito is 1dimensional talk" comes from. He only lost 2 2 guys naturally bigger than him and beat good boxers like Oba Carr and David Reid. From a pure offence perspective,Tito was the COMPLETE package, that's not 1 dimensional. His jabs, hooks, straight right hands, shorts, accurate punches, that's not 1 dimensional. Cotto can box alot better but Tito was more complete offensively.
Re: Can Cotto Be As Good As Felix Trinidad Was ??
Better! The last four fights Cotto had, he grew up! He did his homework! He's new and improved! He is full of surprises and I did not pick a winner between him and Shane because I liked both subjectively I would have liked a draw. Miguel is going to improve with the attitude he has. This is a man that loves boxing and that is what we the fans want.

Another question: Do we all agree that Cotto killed himself to make 140?
I do think so

Did you read any of my posts ?? this is a quote from me earlier in the thread.
agree Cotto has changed his gameplan, plenty of times in fights with Mosley, Judah, Abdulaev, he has shown he can fight off the backfoot and Counter. Switching Southpaw, using his Jab, patient, body and head shots etc. Tito in fights with Oscar De La Hoya, Bernard Hopkins, Winky Wright never changed his gameplan. In the Wright fight Tito kept getting caught with the same basic combo from Wright and never once tried to change his gameplan in the fights i mentioned.

Tito has no plan B, yes he has good arrange of offensive skills no one doubted that. But he could never change his game plan, or adjust, being the complete package means being able to adjust and not keep doing the same thing, over and over when your losing a fight and getting caught with the same punches all the time like Tito did. Really and truthfully yes he was above his natural weight class when he fought Wright, Hopkins, but it doesn't really matter where it would of took place. because Wright, Hopkins, are much better fighters and they proved that Tito is 1 dimensional, i actually think few other fighters in the past proved Tito was 1 dimensional but they couldn't sustain it. If you notice in the Wright fight Tito was getting caught with the same basic Combo all the time jab, jab, straight left, And Tito could not change his game plan nor could he avoid the same basic combinations from Wright, Imo thats what you call a 1 dimensional fighter.
