Very true. Mayweather helped the fight this in the States for sure, but in Britain,I don't know many people that knew of him and had seen him before the fight. It was more,"It's Ricky's Toughest fight" etc rather than "It;s a chance to see P4P number Floyd". So all the talk of him helping Hatton was a bit premature, they BOTH helped each other!

CC for some rationale. One hand washes the other and all that!

That's 1 in 6 of the entire population. Now considering that half the population are women, a third are probably under 18, a couple million mentally disabled, a million gay, and around half the remaining figure completely uninterested in boxing then you are already left with not that many.
So of the remaining eligible potential buyers I guess the majority would have watched it with at least one other person bringing the total down still further.
1.2 million INDIVIDUAL buys? Sorry but I'm not buying that.
As someone stated above, its only 1 in 60 of uk citizens bought the fight based upon these figures. You might think this is unbelievable still but remember 1 billion people watched arsenal-man united in a normal english premier league game a few months back, thats 1 in 6 people in the world. We create the most exciting sports events in the world and people tune in and thats a fact. Maybe thats because our sports dont just beat everyone in america alone and then consider themselves world champions...but maybe im digressing...
Honestly I really take most of these numbers with a HUGE grain of salt. There is no way in hell 1 billion people sat down and watched the Arsenal Man Utd game no matter what the figures say.
I live in the UK and I didn't watch the game. I also know for certain that my brother, mum, dad, gran, niece, 3 nephews, my brothers girlfriend etc didn't watch it either.
Who the hell invents these stupid figures I have no idea but they are just dumb. 1 in 6 of EVERY person in the world watched the Arsenal Man Utd game ::**
Come on let's be serious for a minute. Probably 3 out 6 people in the world don't even have access to a television set so they have to be discounted.
A third will be children and at least 80% of them can be discounted. Factor in all the elderly, females, people working, not interested in football etc there is no way possible that a sixth of the world's population watched that match.
We could quite easily do a test here.
As this is an all male sporting based forum for people in the Western world with internet and tv access for these figures to be correct I would guess about 90% of our forum members must have watched this match.
Well let's see how many actually watched it? I would bet no more than 1 in 20 of all the people who are registered members here watched the Man Utd Aresnal game and yet the people here are those MOST likely to watch it.
The viewing figures are just plain made up imo.

Re: PH MY GOSH-HATTON DID 1.2MILLION IN THE UK?!?!?!
Hatton is loved by his fans and he will have a following to the end of his career no matter what happens.
I think if it wasn't already going to happen this pretty much set Hatton-DLH in stone. Not a good match up by any means, but the cash draw is will be amazing.
I bet for every 1 ppv mayweather sold hatton was responsible for 50 of them

In the UK but not in America. Hatton on his own can't generate much of a PPV as Floyd can. I may be wrong but I believe Floyd's fight with Carlos Baldomir drew bigger PPV numbers than any of Ricky's previous fights.
And let's be absolutely clear on one thing. In future after his last performance Hatton won't sell squat in the US whilst Floyd is now a top PPV draw no question.

Sal made an awesome point about the cost too,£15 compared to what,$50 which is like £35 right? Quite a significant difference.

I'm having trouble with your logic here.
Floyd did 365K -ish average over three pay per views pre-Oscar. Hatton did zero average PPV's pre-Floyd. Yet, you attribute the big numbers to Hatton.
Please explain this apparent logic gap.

I remember Ricky Boxing early in his career at Wembley and bringing around 100 with him. Hes come a long way to think he could sell a Venue in Vegas out all by himself.

How can you gauge Hatton's appeal if he'd never been part of a PPV?
Floyd did 300,000 odd pre-Oscar
Floyd did 850,000 post-Oscar
Floyd more than doubled his audience. That's either a phenomenal rise in popularity OR the other guy was a major force in selling the fight.. as in bigger than Baldomir and Judah
Hope this helps.

Well, HBO and Hatton's promoter have essentially done the gauging for us. If they felt that Hatton-Castillo was a viable PPV, they would have put it on PPV. After all, they are in the business of maximizing their revenues and profits......right? HBO doesn't like to give away what they can sell.
Hatton has a tremendous UK following. Unbelievable. But the reality is that he had zero US PPV buys and had not sold out any of his US fights prior to 'Undefeated'. It will be interesting to see how many U.S. buys that each fighter generates in their next fights.
There is NO QUESTION that 'The World Awaits' was the vehicle that made Floyd take a step-function increase in popularity/notoriety and name recognition.
I don't attribute it to Oscar, per se. It is attributable to the brilliance of the promotion - of which both fighters played a key part. A 24/7 series wasn't really feasible for any other opponents. So both fighters brought some promotional muscle to the table. For Oscar, it was his legendary name. For Floyd, it was the mantle of "p4p king", along with the cult of personality.

To be fair Bilbo, given the fact that you live in Torquay (i think) most people you're likely to know are far too old be staying up until 4am to watch the fight....and far too senile to understand the importance of Arsenal vs Man Utd ;D
Am just pulling ya leg mate, i agree the viewing figures for most sporting events seem a little bit on the made up high side.
