Re: Gomez=Crazy! Accepts bout vs Cotto!
i love the title of the thread.. gomez CRAZY..
Every fighter wants to be the champ, why is he 'crazy' for taking this shot??
If someone fights someone who we feel is out of their league, they are "crazy".. otherwise they are just fighting "bums".
So far out of that season of the Contender, as far as the big names go, Sergio Mora is a fucking VAGINA.. look at the guys Manfredo has fought, Calzaghe/Lacy.. Gomez fought Gatti/Tackie/Cotto.. Mora backed down from a title fight from Taylor.. Granted these are money fights, but they are still stepping in the ring with solid opposition, and i know that Gatti/Tackie are not the toughest, but Gomez wants to fight the best and has constantly said it.. The guy has earned to be where he is, although i don't think he deserved this shot just yet.. by no means is he crazy though.

First off...when was the last time u seen floyd fight an elite guy in his natural weight or in his prime? Secondly...Cotto is not the one going around screaming that he's p4p #1.
He lets his fists do the talking.

Double standard anyone?

Of course it's a double standard. Fans will never admit their idol is taking the easy roads.
The fact is Cotto is a chump for taking a fight like this when there are bigger and more important f ights out there.
The fact is Mayweather is a chump for claiming to be retired on some "I wont let boxing retire me" good guy song and dance, but will only come back for a quick payday.
Fair enough?

Re: Gomez=Crazy! Accepts bout vs Cotto!
I like Cotto a lot. He's an awesome fighter and a nice, respectful, tough young man. However what would we all be saying if PBF decided to fight Gomez next? We are criticizing him for a return borefest with noneother than Oscar Delahoya, and yet THIS is okay? Fighting Alfonso Gomez is okay for Cotto? But Oscar is too easy for PBF? WTF?
-
Re: Gomez=Crazy! Accepts bout vs Cotto!
A few years ago I said "I like Cotto, he's an exciting guy but I doubt he'll ever really make it."
Since then I've been turned into a fully fledged fan as I've witnessed the Perto Rican not just beat, but actually damage and near mutilate every opponent that has been in the Ring with him.
What a fighter!
As for this Gomez fight, well I don't blame either guy for taking the fight....
However there is one point I'd like to raise.
Roy Keane once said that to a large Club like Manchester UNited sometime sthe small clubs are most dangerous. Playing against Man U is the biggest day of the year and they will show up and play like Rael MADRID.
gOMEZ HAS HIS TIME IN THE SUN AGAINST cOTTO AND i WOULDN'T BE SURPRISED TO SEE HIM SHOW UP IN EXCELLENT CONDITION AND MAKE A REAL GO AT BEATING cOTTTO.
nOW i CANNOT ENVISAGE AN UPSET IN ANY WAY APART FROM mIGUEL HAVING HEART FAILURE IN mID RING FROM THE DEMANDS ON HIS HEART DUE TO THE BEATING HE WILL PUT ON gOMEZ IN THE LATE ROUNDS, BUT i DO THINK gOMEZ WILL BE UP FOR IT, ENOUGH TO MAKE IT ENTERTAINING AND WELL WORTH THE WATCH.

Paulie - At the time Cotto fought him, Paulie hadn't beaten anybody really of note.
Quintana - Claim to fame was beating a prospect. Understandable that Cotto wanted to adjust to 147 tho
Urkal - Not impressed
Zab - After Baldi and Mayweather had already beaten him, Zab had the look of a beaten fighter.
Shane - Kudos....could argue that his best years are behind him but could argue that his win over Collazo proved he was close to being the fighter he once was. I actually picked Shane to win so repsect to Cotto for winning.
And now he's fighting a reality TV star.
I don't have a problem with his opposition.
Paulie has proven to be better than people gave him credit for at the time when the fight was signed.
Quintana was his first fight at 147, and was coming off an upset victory.
Urkal was a mandatory who Cotto had to fight to keep his belt.
Zab was a replacement. Remember, Cotto was ready to fight Margarito, but Margarito backed out and decided to fight Williams. Cotto needed a replacement, and Zab was a worthy choice.
Mosley certainly proved that while he's old, he's still a very good fighter.
Cotto is coming off two very physical and tough fights. I have no problem with him fighting Gomez. I don't see Gomez winning, but he's not a complete stiff either. I've seen guys choose much worse opponents for easy wins than Cotto is doing here with Gomez.
My post was a wind up :)
Well apart from the last part....i detest reality tv stars getting world title shots on the back of their appeal to the mainstream audience.

Not only will he stop him, he will stop him early and brutally.
I haven't been the biggest cotto fan, because i still feel that i haven't seen the most from cotto. This last fight with Mosley made me a believer.
If you look at the way cotto is whoopin on his opponents i can't see Alfonso Gomez going far from his own stool without tasting the canvas. I mean, he nuetralized the speed of pual mag, he put a beat down on zab, and most impressive to me was beating Mosley who i believe is one of the most intelligent fighters right now. He may of lost some of his spice, due to age, but he is very very smart.
I WILL give alfonso credit where credit is due. He aint scared. He aint PBF, he aint Sergio Mora, this boy wants to throw down. And "thrown down" he will get

Gomez is not a heavy hitter.
He is way out of his league here just like Manfredo was to Calzaghe and Mora would have been to Taylor.
Cotto is not a fast finisher so I think the fight will go about 4 rounds.
;)

Re: Gomez=Crazy! Accepts bout vs Cotto!
My only issue with this fight is if Cotto takes Gomez too lightly and doesn't get up for this fight. After fighting Judah and Mosley, you can hardly blame Cotto for not being motivated for this fight as he's definetely fighting lower skilled fighter then he's use to. Cotto should would handedly but Gomez is quite durable. I just hope that Cotto doesn't slack in his preperation...
On a side note...ODH vs PBF? >:mad It should be Cotto vs PBF! This fight MUST HAPPEN!

it could be intresting, gomez is pretty good, and i think cotto wants to stay active and have decent`ish fights instead of waiting around for ages for the big fights.

Cotto did not ask for it. But look at it this way Mayweather wont even cosider fighting him so and other top contenders already have a fight coming up, he has stay active. Yes it will be murder but thank god that will teach the reality tv fighters a lesson not to bite more than they can chew. amen
I should preface this post by saying that I am by no means a huge fan of "the contender", nor am I fan fan of the majority of the fighter who compete under the contender banner.
I don't understand the resentment that seems to permeate people's opinions of fighters who appeared on that show. They fight, risking their health and lives, by climbing into a ring and trading punches with other fighters, just the same as every other fighter does. I suppose I can sort of understand the sentiment that they are taking a short-cut in respect to their popularity, but in a sport that has been pushed to the periphery in the way that boxing has I can understand any fighter trying to get ahead in any way they can.
Its not like Don King, or Bob Arum, or Dibella, or any of those equally slimy bastards have never pulled strings, or done much more corrupt things in order to secure big fights (and big paydays for their fighters and themselves). UFC fans don't seem to have the same problem with competitors who enter their ranks via TUF, in fact these guys seems to be applauded and encouraged, with their victory in that "reality show" often securing them major fights, long contracts, and big title fights. I just don't understand the virtol directed at the contender fighters; if you don't like the show, then don't fucking watch it, but don't deride the people who are risking their lives for your entertainment. If in 10 years boxing is in the mainstream consciousness again, we might all be looking back talking about what a great services shows like the contender provided.

Stop talking nonsense idiot.Didn't you choose Judah and Mosley to beat Cotto>?And still you don't respect him?!Guarantee my ass..A slight wind, you really are a prat aren't you?At least we won't see Miguel quit on his stool or get KTFO by Vince Phillips anytime soon? ;)

Sorry Snakey but that is a ridiculous comment, Cotto was badly weight drained at Jr Welterweight and his punch resistance was nowhere what it is now at Welterweight. And even At Jr Welterweight Cotto was only rocked by good punchers like Ricardo Torres who almost had 100 percent KO record, and is now a Jr Welterweight World champion. And DeMarcus Corley who even rocked Floyd Mayweather Jr, Cotto at Welterweight took flush punches off good punchers like Judah, Mosley, very well and comeback strong that is the most important thing and he has shown his punch resistance is much better at Welterweight plus he is much stronger. Cotto has only ever been on the canvas once and that was from a push, Cotto has the kind of the chin that can be dented but its hard to crack it completely. I agree he can be hurt but he also has amazing recovery power's, and the most important thing in a boxer is if they can comeback from being badly hurt which Cotto has and has passed with flying colors, i think your being way too harsh on him or you don't know the full history on him one of the two.

It's not the same thing because Cotto wanted to fight Mayweather first and de la Hoya second, but they instead decided to fight each other. Second, Williams is tied up in a fight with Quintana, Margarito will be fighting Judah around the same time, and Clottey is probably waiting for his mandatory against Cintron (I guess Cintron was available, however). Thus, who can Cotto fight at the time. Plus, this is a set up for a fight with Margarito, thus you can't compare the two because Cotto does not seem to be ducking ANYBODY.

As Rican said, firstly it's a set up for a Margarito fight and secondly,Cotto is coming off wins over Judah and Mosley, and Gomez isn't exactly a bum is he? And secondly,Floyd has fought Mitchell,Gatti and Brussles before his admittedly impressive 07.So how can you question Gomez as a gimme opponent in the build up to a Tony fight?Stupid thinking.

you guys point out Its a travesty the way Floyds career has unfolded with his comp, but if you were comparing careers up to this point Floyd is by far superior has achieved more and earned his titles and has beather a few top flite fighters in their prime... Agreed...and I don't know why I keep repeating this but Gomez is not a gimme....Cotto is going to beat him yes but Gomez is not going to lay down....The guy does not consider himself an opponent in anyway...I can name worse opp to choose from

2 things:
1.) Mayweather was an ATG at 130-135.However,from jlc the second time to Oscar last year,he fought Gatti,Mitchell,Brusseles,Corley etc.I think you'll find the majority of his legacy was built at the lower weights,so compare careers in between JLC the second time and Oscar.
2.) Who fought better fighters at 140 and 147,Cotto or Floyd?I have no doubt in my mind it was/is Cotto and the longer Floyd fights part time fighters/guys moving up,whereas Cotto fights guys like Clottey,Marg,Williams etc,Cotto will further distance himself from Mayweather in terms of opp at 147.

Cotto hasnt faced guys like that, so from your standpoint its pure and utter speculation
How can you say he had fought the better comp when barring Mosely, which was the 1st superstar fighter he faced and Mosely is 37 and not at his best... Again lets not get off subject here..
Cotto is a bit overrrated from the sense that he is yet to fight a prime superstar or legitamately win a title but yet is vaunted as a world beater ;)

Can u imagine the S*** u guys would fling at PBF if he decided to fight Gomez?
First off...when was the last time u seen floyd fight an elite guy in his natural weight or in his prime? Secondly...Cotto is not the one going around screaming that he's p4p #1.
He lets his fists do the talking.
When was the last time Cotto fought an elite guy in his natural weight or in his prime.
Lets see, the only elite fighter Cotto has fought is SSM and he was 36.
Double standard anyone?
You are too blinded to see the truth. You have to open your eyes to see.
floyd says he's #1 and doesn't act like it. He decides to retire as soon as he realizes that there are no more easy fights for him. Oscar comes back and boom, he becomes a fighter again.
Just because he can fool you doesn't mean he can fool us all. :stupid:
If Cotto had the choice of fighting either Mayweather or Delahoya, who do you think he would pick?
My guess would be Delahoya, for obvious reasons ($$$)
cc...youre probably right about that but floyd already beat oscar so this is a mute point

Come on now, Cotto and Judah just fought each other and Judah(the loser) is now getting Margarito?
What the heck was stopping Cotto from calling out Margarito?
Judah should be fighting Gomez on the undercard with Cotto vs Margarito in the main event.
