Cotto Vs Margarito Who Wins????

Actually this is very interesting.

Has any fighter really pressured Cotto and when pressured did Cotto look good.

If I remember right Cotto loses most of his effectiveness when he is going backwards.

Lovemore pressured him and he didn't look good. Against Mosley he looked good but when he was on his backfoot he didn't.

Cotto looks best when he is dictating the pace and walking someone down. Maybe the worse thing to do is to give Cotto ground and wait for him to do something before you do its sort of like the mistake people made against Kostya Tszyu, they would give him ground and wait, but when he was pushed back he wasn't as effective and Hatton pushed him back the entire match and won.


However I don't think Margarito applies that kind of pressure, his pressure is winged shots in an off balance and straight up way.

So he wouldn't be as effective pressuring Cotto as the others because it will be easier for Cotto to see the punches coming.


So.. if Margarito wants to win this fight, he needs to go to the body and go there often. I don't think Cotto has a good belly, no one's really tested it yet. So if Im Margarito, I go straight for his gut and his ribs, and then go upstairs later. Cotto has the ability to outlast someone and finish them late, take out his body early and he won't have that second gear, so when Margarito's kicks in, Cotto would be in for it.

but if Margarito doesn't go to the body we'll get a normal somewhat mediocre match with some exciting spots that will have the HBO crew reaching the point but not being THAT memorable with Cotto winning a decision.

Cotto looked great when when Mosley was pressuring, Cotto was fghting in the back foot and doing a hell of a job

I've changed my mind slightly(Cotto can definitely win this fight), but I'm still rooting for Margarito simply because I think he deserves some success. Guy has been toiling away at 147 fighting guys no-one else wanted to,7/8 RING top 10 fighters and only now are peeps taking notice. I think his reach and height will cause Cotto problems. Close fight,as long as it's a war,I don't mind but I favour Tony.

I agree. If the Tony that fought Clottey and Williams shows up, I think Cotto will have a field day, but if the Tony that fought Cintron and Johnson shows up, I think he has an excellent chance. He just seems much more energized and determined since the Williams loss. In his defense though, against Clottey he was coming off of only one round in the ring in the previous 20 months, and I would also argue that Clottey is quicker than Cotto, with better defense as well. Williams overwhelmed him with volume of punches which we know Cotto isn't going to do. Anyways, I'll be rooting for Tony all the way, but he definitely has an upward hill to climb here.

Cotto can win this fight doing what he does best, combining his boxing skills with his power. I believe that Cotto will need to do a lot of boxing in this fight taking advantage of his speed over Margarito. But, also he has to claim for respect and be aggressor at some points. I think Margarito will not be able to manage this type of fight from Cotto. Cotto needs to be careful with Margarito's upper, followed by the right hand (if Cotto steps back), but I see Cotto wining by UD.

Although I admit to voting mostly with my heart, I do think Cotto can win this fight... IF he uses the right tactics. He needs to avoid getting into a headhunting war with Tony... use his considerable boxing skills and newly unveiled speed and jab... and work Tony's body. I personally don't see the fight ending in a decision.

The thing with Margarito is that he manages to drag people to fight his fight. Santos started their fight well but once Tony started tagging him, Santos became stationary. And if anyone wants to see how to attack the body, watch some ruonds of that fight. Margarito beat Santos body up bad. Point being, Margarito is no slouch with bodyshots and Cotto, as showed against Torres, can become ebroiled in a tit for tat war. And that's EXACTLY what I want to see!:D:D:D

To me Cotto has never been pressured, the way Tony brings it and I think we know about Tony's will and mental makeup, to me the jury is still out on Cotto. Miguel threw it in reverse when he couldnt break Shane down and boxed off the backfoot well, but Margarito comes at you with a differnt kind of pressure, he has excellent punch selection and everyone is nasty. Cotto needs to stay away from the ropes

Margarito was knocked down by Danny Perez in 1999 but i see your point, Cotto was surperior boxing skills plus he can box on the back foot very well, plus because his hooks are much shorter he can win exchanges just some the ponder about.

Margarito was badly hurt by a body shot by Juan Soberanes now Margarito was a teenager at the time but has anyone really tested Margarito to the body since ?? i think it will be interesting to see how Margarito copes with Cotto's body attack.

I voted Cotto. He is clearly the better boxer with more speed, better defence, speed etc....

That being said, I think Tony can definitely win this fight if Cotto is not in the shape of his life and/or he doesn't fight smart and take his time breaking him down.

I thing this fight will play out as follows:

1)Cotto wins widw UD by outboxing Tony and cutting down his punch output with hard clean shots.

2)Cotto realizing Tony's chin in not one usually given to a human and possibly landing enough hard shots to the body to get a late stoppage.

And for the most likely scenario IMO....

3)We all know Cotto is well known for rearranging faces and I think with Tonys defence or lack thereof, this fight will be no different. Tony will likely get cut badly and Cotto will capitalize and possibly get the fight stopped on cuts.

I think "Spicoli Surfs Nawlin's" is gonna owe me 1000 rep and be walking around with a goofy name for a bit. :)
