I respect Joe but a win over Jones won't get much credit from me at this stage.
Jones is past his best.

Id say there is a lot to be respected there;)
It is a bit of a shame... He won my respect years ago but have never liked his style. He wins fights. I have seen many of his early fights after the fact and saw that he was a crisp puncher with pop but was forced to change his style after the repeated injurys...
That being said...
Years from now Joe will be remembered as a great champion and kingpin. He destroyed Lacy and Beat Bhop that CLEARLY... CLEARLY has more left in the tank then we thought when we saw him against Tarver, Wright and Calzaghe.
IMHO the Pavlik fight showed just how good Joe is and added alot of stock to that fight.
I don't really see a plethora of Calzaghe haters anymore. It's undeniable to brush off his accomplishments.
Joe Calzaghe is as great a champ in modern time as you can get...
Him beating Hopkins is debatable which makes using that as a plus for Calzaghe IMO wrong, You could say he had a close fight with Bernard either way, but saying he clearly won isn't correct.
Well, all due respect(you do hold the gay-off belt) I saw Calzaghe winning by a point... Close but none the less still a win... And even a close fight with Bernard is still a plus for Calzaghe seeing the highly touted(and one of my fav fighters) Pavlik was nearly of not totally(arguable) white washed by him... So yes, I disagree;)

Re: Ok Calzaghe Haters What Does He Need To Do In Jones Fight To Get Respect!
Whatever that gay-off thing was, it was gay in and of itself. Whoever feels that it is important to hold a popularity contest or unpopularity contest based on a forum is gay. I think you can give Calzaghe credit for how he did against Hopkins for sure, but saying he beat Hopkins clearly is wrong because he didn't, even having him win by 1 round doesn't overcome the fact that Hopkins is 43 all other acclompishments included. That fight helped Calzaghe's credentials for sure, but it also didn't because IMO it shows that Hopkins prime for prime was the better man, and this fight will be meaningless as well because of Roy even looks half decent IMO will show he would be the better man prime for prime, and if Roy wins then Calzaghe looks like a fool, which also doesn't give him due credit because he is a good fighter, but in terms of all time greatness he is more on Mosley or Dela HOya's level.

ha ha sorry man that came accross wrong, i meant that american fighters often never defend outta america, not that i think they should defend in briatain all the time. plus hatton & calzaghe get crowds off 55,000+ in britain, thats impressive dont u think?

suppose its more imporant RJJ respects JC than all the JC Haters, RJJ said he will be fighting the fastest puncher he ever met and Hopkins also respects JC. thats much more important!

yea its impressive but u must remember that hatton and JC are the only most popular fighters in all of Britian. so its much easier to draw a bigger when those are the most popular guys in the country. but america has alot of popular fighters but theres too many fights here.

Hey man... You won the gay-off be proud. ;D
All this prime for prime talk... It's a moot point... They were both different fighters in the beginning of their primes... TOTALLY different style for sure with Calzaghe cracking more and not slapping pitty pat flurries to astound the judges and Hopkins being a more agressive fighter who was a good finisher(Course Hop looked like his old self this fight).
Stating Hopkins is 43 is also moot at this point. We all know that a boxer is only as old as the amount of punishment he has sustained over the course of his or her career. Hopkins is not an "old" fighter and shouldn't be looked at that way as that was dispelled and blatantly apparent in this fight...
I think we'll have to agree to disagree.

True but america has so many fighters like, pavlik, bhop, taylor, shane mosley, roy jones, even tarver. but american cant all go to there fights because theres just to many. but when you have JC and hatton having 4-6 fights a year its much easier to support them since its not that many fights.

Think about the respective population sizes of the US and the UK and then think about the comparative numbers of notable fighters from each country. The numbers are pretty comparable really. There is a reason Pavlik and Hopkins didnt fight in a US stadium. Two top level fighters, but it wouldnt have sold out.
But (and this is an edit) of course, the UK is a tiny place in comparison. But I dont think American fighters generally have the same level of support in terms of going out and supporting their fighter.

Re: Ok Calzaghe Haters What Does He Need To Do In Jones Fight To Get Respect!
My thoughts on it:
He can never gain respect from the haters.
The haters are just that, HATERS! They will hate him whatever he does.
1. He fights lacy, the haters are screaming how lacy will bash him out the ring, he batters him.
2. He fights kessler, the haters are relishing the thought of kessler outboxing and overwhelming calzaghe, calzaghe nullifies him and finishes it with ease.
3. He fights hopkins (the same hopkins who bashed the sh1t out of pavlik, tarver and wright), the haters say he will get ko'd by hopkins, he has hopkins gassing for air after the 8th round and wins the fight.
Even if you take away his other career wins, take away the fact he is the longest champion in the history of the sport still boxing today, take away the fact hes a 2 weight champ, and just look at those 3 things...NORMALLY its enough for any true boxing fan to say 'yeah hes a wicked fighter.'
But the fact remains, they dont.
The reason for this is very sad.
Instead of being 'reasonable' and 'balanced' people and saying 'i dont like calzaghes style because he is too unorthadox and i dont like his swinging punches, but you have to give him respect for what hes achieved' (any true boxing fan would say this)...they just hate him.
Im relishing the prospect of seeing the haters sitting at home cursing their tv screens when they see calzaghe coming into the ring against jones, the haters praying from calzaghe to lose...but once again, like very single time he has ever been doubted, he'll win!
And then as predicted, we will have the same threads all over again and again, the same people saying how they still dont rate calzaghe (as predicted), over and over again lol.
To be honest, as for the way he fights, id much rather see him go all out against jones and drop him.
Everyone has said that theres a prospect that 'calzaghe could look good enough to maybe have done well against jones at his peak'...
HAHAHAAHAHAHAHA its as if even if calzaghe wins, it automatically still means that jones was better at his peak PMSL, JOKERS!
If calzaghe wins then it means that of course he couldve given a peak roy jones a run for his money.
If calzaghe easily wins then it means HE MIGHT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO BEAT A PEAK ROY JONES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!
But...it all means nothing, calzaghe will fight jones and win, then he might have one more fight...possibly a rematch against hopkins and win again.
But even if calzaghe beats jones and hopkins (twice) then the haters will still say that they are better than him...WHAT BACKWARDS WAY OF THINKING IS THAT? LOL!
The guy cant do anything to gain respect from haters. AND THATS EXACTLY WHY I SUPPORT HIM!
Because i love to see the same people get silenced time and time again, then come up with more excuses and arguments lol.
When you look at the facts they are plain and simple:
If calzaghe beats jones then the guy is 48,0,0 anyone who cant respect that is a bit of a muppet really arent they?
Hes beaten hopkins (THE SAME OLD HOPKINS WHO HAS HAD HIS BEST CAREER WINS EVER AT THIS AGE, BASHING UP WRIGHT, TARVER AND PAVLIK), eubank, lacy, reid and kessler...soon to be jones.
Undefeated champ for over 11 years.
2 weight champ.
People will keep hating him, but the bottom line is that he will go down in history as a legend, esspecially after he bashes roy jones, we will then know exactly WHY ROY JONES AVOIDED HIM!

You are entiltled to your average opinion , as for Calzaghe ever being on the level of a prime RJJ , dont make me laugh.
Stick to bodybuilding , and for the record i HATE calzaghe , but i respect him as a fighter , i just dont think hes ATG.

Jury is out on Roy Jones been an all time great LOL!;D ive heard it all now.

Re: Ok Calzaghe Haters What Does He Need To Do In Jones Fight To Get Respect!
Not have the Jones fight
This is not a slam on Joe
Roy's done, its more on Roy. If Joe hadnt been chasing him for 10 years now, this fight wouldnt be happening.
10 years ago, this would have been a really interesting fight.
But it isnt 10 years ago.
If Roy somehow finds a gear,I dont think he has anymore, then it will get compelling

How much credit he gets in MY book depends somewhat depends on how Jones looks and how he goes into the fight mentally. Jones has looked progressively better since Tarver 3, and he's improved some technical flaws that he used to mask with almost godlike reflexes. He still has his handspeed and some tools that could give Joe problems. If Jones looks good, and Calzaghe still beats him clearly, it'll give him credit. I think Jones actually has a chance in this fight, because I don't think he will go in afraid of getting hit and that will allow him to open up.
I echo this sentiment. Only to add, if RJJ looks good for the first 2/3 of the fight and then Calzaghe knocks him out, well, that would be definitely make me think twice.
Of course, like him or not, he deserves credit. He is a special talent.

I guess Joe Louis's bum of the month club and Marcianos beating of aging champions nolonger in their prime would have to rip them out of the ATG catagory as well:rolleyes:

We the fans supply all the funds to the fighters.
So basically the only thing that sickens us more than a fighter stepping through a hand picked opposition with one goal in mind ,is to then choose the correct timing to fight the ones you stepped over previously when they were hot and fireing.
All credit to all the fighters who go all out to fight the biggest threats, because personally they just have to know.
Those are the real warriors even if they lose a few.

Re: Ok Calzaghe Haters What Does He Need To Do In Jones Fight To Get Respect!
Teath did you say that Calzaghe was on the level of Oscar and Mosley but not that of Roy and Bernard but i say this to you dude. Oscar did just as much and fought way better competion then Roy and Bernard did. Even if you take his loses in to acount which were close he still has more wins over former champions and champs as Roy and Bernard do and has a better resume then both of them on who he has fought Shane Mosley is close as well he fought and beat just as good of fighter as well. So by saying Calzaghe is along the lines of Oscar saying better then Jones and Bernard because they are in the same boat as Oscar is.

this sums up JC. I give him respect for the kessler fight, but on hindsight I don't see lacy as anything other than another amir khan. which is to say green and waiting to be exposed. also the height disadvantage (something carl froch mentioned when questioned about the ashira fight) makes the win a foregone conclusion. against BH, he just manages to outlast him and gets knockdown in the fight. BH isn't even known as a puncher, which makes you wonder if JC wasn't so protected what his stats would look like.

The Hopkins Knockdown was a flash knockdown, caught him cold. Yeh it was a good shot and JC was sloppy, but he got straight up and was fine. Calzaghe has taken some huge shots in his career and although he has been down 3 times? (in 45 fights) he has never been in serious trouble. Can't really question his chin. And as for been protected, what fighters fighting at SMW between 1997 & 2006 was he protected from?

Ignore them you Calzaghe loving fools.

Bro, none of you guys get it... the answer is no one... Haters hate. That's what they do... People either like him or dislike him... that's it.
Had he fought Jones in his prime and beat him he'd be on another level and a star in the US as well as Britain but that's neither here nor there at this point cuz Jones would have cut him to ribbons in his prime IMHO.... But everytime I've bet against Joe I've been wrong so who am I to judge.
there will always be an excuse for the haters...
It's a losing battle, my friend
