It's pretty damn clear that his opposition was less than mediocre in his prime, that is NOT even debatable..
Jones and Hopkins CLEARLY had much better opposition in their prime.. without even going through names, they had a LOT more exciting careers as far as big fights..
This is Hopkins Prime opposition during his reign at Middleweight. Care to revise that statement?
Robert Allen THREE TIMES
William Joppy
Morrade Hakkar
Carl Daniels
Keith Holmes
Antwon Echols TWICE
Syd Vanderpool
Simon Brown
Andrrew Council
John David Jackson
William Bo James
Joe Lipsey
Glen Johnson
Steve Frank
Segundo Mercado
That list is better then what Calzaghe faced.
Antwon Echols was a dangerous fighter in his prime, Council was a good fighter, John David Jackson was a good fighter, Glen Johnson was and is a very good fighter thats when he was still the undefeated version of Glen Johnson.
Big H, why didn't you list Trinidad in that list? Just curious..
In his prime, he faced better opposition, no doubt..
Even past his prime, in the last few years, he's fought De la hoya, Taylor twice (two close decisions), Tarver, Winky, and an up and comer in Pavlik..
Compared to, Lacy, Kessler, Bika, Manfredo, Roy Jones of late for Calzaghe..
There is no comparison.
Re: As of right now, who could beat Calzaghe?
Kelly Pavlik and Carl Froch IMO

Johnson was never anything special until he beat Jones. Back in the day Johnson lost to guys like Omar Sheika

Re: As of right now, who could beat Calzaghe?
Lol maybe he got robbed against Omar Sheika. Besides in he taking boxing seriously for a bit, since then he has been very solid, but he has been robbed numourous times.
Re: As of right now, who could beat Calzaghe?
Carl Froch has the tools to give Calzaghe real trouble.Froch has raw power in both hands and has the youth too.
Re: As of right now, who could beat Calzaghe?
Excuse me while I throw up here but how in the hell is Tavoris being even mentioned here?
Love the kid and he's def. opened up some eyes but come on people.
Why would Joe or for that matter any of the top guys bother with Cloud?
The kids only beat Julio G. whos at best a good/decent fighter.
I mean boxers like Erdei, Glen or even the winner of Brahemer-Garay would deserve could have a better shot at beating Joe.
Lets not go crazy here... Next thing you'll know people will also list Diaconu as someone who Joe should fight.
IMO if it's not BCD or a rematch with Hopkins he shouldn't fight at all.

I never said Joe Calzaghe should fight Tavoris Cloud, the question was who could beat Joe Calzaghe. And i give Tavoris Cloud a decent shot, although he needs more experience against the top names. Im very impressed with him so far, Julio Cesar Gonzalez had never been stopped.
Re: As of right now, who could beat Calzaghe?
Anyone else think Cloud resembles an up & coming Lacy a bit ?In a good way

You've gotta be kidding ICB, your honestly telling me you'd give Tavoris a chance at beating Joe?
ICB, I don't want to offend you but chances are you've only seen Tavoris fight 4 times. vs. Herrera vs. Rodriguez vs. Wood and vs. Gonzalez which are his only fights that are up on YouTube and coincidentally are his last 4 fights and even more coincidentally Herrera, Wood & Julio are the best names on his resume.
I've been watching Tavoris since he was showcased in a fight vs. Hicks. I've often said depending on the quality of opposition I think all prospects should have at least 20-25 fights before anyone starts calling him the next best thing or even before he's matched up vs. top champs.
Tavoris fits that catagory right now I would not have him fight any of the champs.
Tavoris is still raw and relies solely on his power, he's shown signs of skill but again the opposition has been limited and boxing vs. someone like Julio and moving and looking fast vs. him is not hard to do.
Tavoris best opponent is a waaaaaaaay past his best Julio who again even at his best was good/decent fighter. I can't even begin to understand where someone would even think that Tavoris has a shot at beating Joe.
Tavoris is too green right now and I def. can't see him causing an elite fighter like Joe any problems. The kid would be so fucken struck at seeing thousands of fans cheering for Joe he'd probably piss his shorts during the announcements.

Actually in a bad way...
Cloud has relied too much on just his power just like Lacy, he needs to be set up vs. someone whos gonna move around a bit to see how he handles them a Shaun George or a Elvir Muriqui just to test it out...
Thus far his opponents have all been the type to stand and trade none of them have been boxers that move and or used the ring.
Re: As of right now, who could beat Calzaghe?
I think that only options are B-hop & BCD (not that i think they could beat him) but cant see joe fighting anyone else.
I think he will fight one more time at millenium stadium as a send off & it will prob be b-hop 2 as he has said he will travel over & its defo a fight that sells what with b-hops trash talkin.
I personally think he should retire, as there will always be another challenge it never ends, do what lennox did get out & stay out.

Ok, when has Froch proved he has power?
Youth!! Youth!!! Dont make me fuucking laugh, he may be younger than Joe but he isnt young at 31;D;D
Whats even more ridiculous is people mentioning his name alongside Joe as a possible superstar opponent;D;D
Froch means nothing on the world stage, he has no belt, he hasnt even fought for one yet:rolleyes:
Joe should bullshiit the mothy prick and tell him and Kessler a winner between the two of them gets a match with Joe, see how eager Froch is then, Kessler would deffo be up for it, he sees an inexperienced old man who gets hit easy, an easy route back to a title shot;D

I do think he has a snappier jab and punches straight better but thats a goodpoint.Gonzalez was a "name" but at that point,on more occasions,he soaked up punches and moved in slow motion....literally.George is a good pick. He's riding high now and is a boisterous one. When they started sliding/moving on Lacy, the kinks in the armor showed.
