But even if it was Holyfield,it would make more of a bump on anthing then sites like this.
Nobody in the real world really cares about Holyfield much anymore either,if Laila Ali decided that she really liked chicks it would get more play in the media.
Ah Trainer you really livinig in your own world, you think Evander Holyfiel could announce he was gay and the world wouldn't talk about it?
I agree that Laila Ali announcing she was a lesbian would certainly get into the media but this has nothing to do with the fact that she's a boxer but rather everything to do with who her dad was.
And even with Laila Ali, you are completely, utterly and hopelessly cluelessly wrong if you think Laila announcing herself a lesbian would gain more press attention that Holyfield announcing he is gay.
Actually you are, nobody cares about Holyfield anymore, they havent for years now.
It'll play on boxing boards, but it would barely be a hiccup on a mainstream news board like Yahoo
I see Fenster is on this thread, at least he'll speak some sense here.
Since when did Holyfield cease to be irrelevent as a huge global figure of sport? True most people don't care about his continued boxing career as he's far past his prime but he's still a bona fide A+ celebrity virtually the whole world over.
You really think if he, a boxing legend, a devout Christian, a man with more kids than even Katfights announced he was gay that it wouldn't even make the main page of news on yahoo?
If it is was anyone else on the board who said this I'd be in disbelief, but of course from you such a position is to be expected

It would show up,but it would be gone the next day, really Holyfields own fault,he cant seem to wait to find another way to tarnish his own legend, but it would be exactly the same with Ali,it would show up for the day of the announcement, and be gone the next day.

You think if Muhammad Ali announced he was gay it would be news that morning and then forgotten the next day?????:o:11fb8:
I can't even be bothered to explain.......
Re: How well would a Gay boxer do?
If Muhammad Ali turned out to be a homosexual after all these years and all those marriages it would be a sensational story. Most stories are pretty impermanent and don't tend to get serialised, but for it's time at the centre of things it would be pretty huge. No doubt about it.
Re: How well would a Gay boxer do?
To TM's credit Bilbo I think he was talking about Laila Ali.
Otherwise, he's crazy. It's REALLY stupid to reason with him and I assure you it's much more fun just to be straight up mean to him, but I won't for a minute.
Trainer, who had the bigger deal made when they came out, John Amaechi or Sheryl Swoopes? A hall of fame female basketball player or a journeyman center who played for like 5 years? It was Amaechi and if you want to argue that then you are wrong. That caused such a stir and people got fined/fired for what they said after hearing that because of the stir.
It would be so detrimental for everyone involved except maybe those at the top if there was an openly gay boxer. Maybe an opportunity to make some money but every sport has a great degree of homophobia. Athletes, guys in general are homophobic or at least not comfortable with competing against gays. It's not something you want to think about.
Could you imagine if Ricardo Mayorga fought an openly gay fighter? Those gay rights loons would literally turn up in the 1000's at a weigh in. Boxing is MORE susceptible to homophobia because there is no governing body to keep fighter's comments in check with fines/suspensions. In the NBA you can't say faggot to a reporter because David Stern will take a paycheck away or suspend you. The UFC probably would too. Who would in boxing?
Re: How well would a Gay boxer do?
I think it would be great to have a gay boxer mincing around at a press conference with Mayorga. He could be topless with his nipples painted blue and strutting around with a pink feather boa. The gay that is, not Mayorga. Meanwhile Mayorga would be beating on his chest with his arms like king kong, shouting "fuck you, creepy, gay, homo, gypsy girl.....you have sex with Oscar Delahoya! Raaaaghhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!". Etc.
Erm....hours of fun there.
Re: How well would a Gay boxer do?
IOn all seriousness I think their only problem would be securing fights...For some reason even to thins day there is a phobia about Gay males and the fact that every gay man wants to bang every man they see so any contact means it is a sexual advance....
Skill wise there is no difference either they can fight or they can't just like anyone else...If they were not better then average though it would be a social disaster
Re: How well would a Gay boxer do?
I can just see Michael Buffer minutes before the fight announcing....
"Lets get ready for Bumhole" ...!!!!!!
If i were a fighter and i managed to lose to a sausage jockey i swear i'd have to take my own life.
Wasn't Alan Mincer a merchant of the backdoor?
Re: How well would a Gay boxer do?
Holyfield is one of the few boxers to ever still be mentioned on sportscenter or other sports shows, him coming out would be news, its absurd to argue otherwise.
The worst thing possible for boxing would be Holyfield getting permanently injured or worse in a fight. That seems besides the point but the point is that's because he's still one of boxing's few big names.
Re: How well would a Gay boxer do?
Wasn't Emille Griffith a closet homosexual?

I actually think it will play LESS on boxing boards if Holyfield came out gay, then in the actual media..
If you ask a random person, that isn't a boxing fan, which is a huge majority of sports fans, to name 10 boxers.. i bet holyfield will be in there. Everyone knows Holy.. If Holy vs Tyson happened, the general public would be like OMG TYSON VS HOLYFIELD.. It's safe to say that people on this board would probably careless if that fight happened.

Yeah, I can confirm.
The movie - documantary driven by Griffith himself "Ring of Fire," deals with this....
Check it out:

Re: How well would a Gay boxer do?
lol
The world wouldn't care if Holyfield came out the closet? ;D TM you are different gravy mate.
Last year, on a European tour, to promote his book, Holyfield spent a week in Britain. He was on every major radio station, in every newspaper and did loads of TV appearances - sport and non-sport related.
He's done shows like "dancing with the stars" in America and Britain. The man is a star way beyond boxing.
Evander Holyfield is an iron would be headline news all over the world. Fact.
Re: How well would a Gay boxer do?
How about Trenton Titsworth? ;D
Seriously, any openly gay boxer would have to have some balls to be public about it, I think most would have to respect that. If he was good nobody would want to fight him though in fear of losing to a gay guy. Emile Griffith is one of my favorite boxers though if he was a openly gay black man in the 60s hed probably be a brave and dead guy.

Didn't bother going through the thread as I'm sure theirs a couple of Paulie jokes, along with a JMM joke and possibly a SSM.
To answer your question in short I think it would all depend on the how good the boxer was.
The ATG and living legend Emile Griffith was gay.
World Welteweight champ
WBC & WBA Welterweight champ (2 time champ)
World Light Middleweight champ (Recog. by 1 org.)
WBC & WBA Middleweight champ (2 time champ)
Fought the likes of "Kid Paret" (RIP), Ortega, Dupas, Moyer, Wright, Fernandez, Rodriguez, Carter, Curvis, Gonzalez, Tiger, Archer, Benvenutti, Napoles, Monzon, Mundine, Licata, Briscoe, Antuofurmo, Hamani, Minter. (losing to some of them)
So how can a gay boxer do... Well there it is.
Re: How well would a Gay boxer do?
Id happily admit to rather getting my ass kicked by a girl than letting a gay fella beat me up.
You`d spend the whole fight worrying whether he is actually getting aroused with every clinch!!!

Sounds gay enough.
Lesbians would obviously fight for the minge title.
