A great Champion and a kind person. R.I.P.
He was a great champion, he was a 5 stars class man, gentleman and he was one of the best example you could display to convince any reluctant persons that Boxing wasn't only filled with dumbnuts with a lust for violence and blood. He will be missed by everyone, including the scene he did contribute so greatly toward the years.
Alexis, from the world down here, with our pints full and our arms raised up, we salute you.
shittiest week in a long time, RIP flaco
Sad news although to be honest I actually thought he had died years ago probably got him confused with Monzon.
But when I saw the news I was like wtf when he did he come back to life? :-\
This is sh*t! I just saw him... the flag bearer for his country in the last olympics, such an honor, and now this. This news is strange...unreal.
One of my favorite fighters, growing up, an all time great no less!
Goodbye champ! RIP. May you find peace in the hereafter...
I would not be surprised if indeed there is foul play at the bottom of this pile. Politics? I have seen too many instances with similar circumstances, to be totally naive and just take the initial reports at face value.
Why would he take his life? He gave up a personal life in the struggle to help his people, to alleviate their plight, the less fortunate, only to take his life with a bullet to the chest?
Was he afraid he will miss shooting his own head, so he chose a bigger target, his chest? Something's amiss...
This guy was renowned to be the most accurate puncher in his time! Go figure!
This is awful news:eek: RIP Champ
Aint been on in a couple of days. man this is s**t news. Condolences.
RIP, what a fighter....
Wow, that's depressing. There are no limits to the resect Arguello gets, one of the most accurate punchers I've ever seen he is awesome to watch no matter who he was in against. RIP Arguello, hopefully this brings Mick around he was a really big 'El Flaco Explosivo' fan.
Really shame to see him go like that, may he RIP.
damn this has been one messed up week :( RIP
What the hell is up with all these celebrities and legends dying!?!?!?!?! These last 4 weeks have been bothing but deaths :(
First David Carradine, the next week Misawa, the next week Ed McMahon, Farah Fawcett, Michael Jackson and Billy Mays, and now Alexis Arguello?!!??! What the hell!!
Great fighter to watch perfect punch technique, he really was one of the most complete boxers ever, really sad to hear this R.I.P.
Billy Mays not Willie ;)
great champ, even greater man, will be sorley missed
Well I mean there are thousands of famous people if you considered business moguls, athletes, actors, artists, kids of famous people and people who are famous for no good reason. So I mean it really is no surprise that many die and some in what seems succession.
They had the chance to touch millions and had wealth/fame for awhile.......more than most of us will get. Hopefully they didn't waste the chance to help others.
R.I.P. Champ One of boxing good guys
One of the finest fighters to grace the ring and a gentleman above all. Not at all convinced it was a suicide. RIP champ.
Due to the reports of Arguello's death as a suicide there are several things that point out reasons this may have happened. Years ago when the military government took over his country they confiscated most of his property and bank account. This led to a couple of comeback attempts. Then in the late 1980s and early 1990s he developed a crack problem that led him to talk of suicide. I always thought that he had gotten over the drug problems but if he never did or relapsed, that definitely could have triggered this, if it is determined to be a suicide. Just some thoughts from old news reports I read years ago in The Ring and in the mainstream press.

 El Flaco Explosivo
que en paz descanse..
thanks for the great fights...
have to agree, whatever your reason for the comment whether it's based on religion of confusion. As the saying goes unless you have walked a mile in anothers shoes...
having worked in the mental health business I know how easy it is for that switch to be hit for some, RIP Champ.
I am paying my respects to a popular and respected fighter. A class act in and outside of the ring.
Great fighter and classy guy out of the ring. But does anyone find it strange for a man to commit suicide by shooting himself in the chest as reported? Actually it's reported that he died from a gunshot wound to the chest.
Depression is an extremely complex set of emotions. I was there once in my life after a terrible accident. I hated life but wore a smile to all around me. The anxiety can be overwhelming to the point where you just want the pain to end. When caught up in a low enough place, you don't consider looking for help as this is "your pain" and nobody elses. The last thing you want to do is burden someone else with your issues. Much of the reason you want to go out is because you feel like a burden, so why punish people with more?
I got lucky (or unlucky I considered it at the time). People noticed something amiss with me even when I told them I was fine. I was in another place and people noticed because I was at the point where I had to be taken care of physically and I could not withdrawl from them as most with depression do. I was forced to live with my parents because I could not walk at the time. The only thing that prevented me from going ahead was not wanting my Mother or Father finding me dead, but I had a plan. They noticed beforehand and got our family doctor there to talk to me. She noticed it also and took it from there, I was actually resentful for a while, until I started slowly climbing back out of the deep hole I was in.
So calling out for help is something that only happens when you want it to happen. Most people who truly want to leave this world, succeed. The rest who do not succeed, are usually just in a bad enough place where they cry for help, but there are vastly different levels.
When the demons run deep enough, calling out for help is the last thing you want to do. It is the lonliest place on earth.
I gave a reason earlier why he might do that. And it's not really any stranger than someone wanting him dead and shooting him once in the chest.
I can't really see that the local media and police, would say suicide without some reason. It's hardly a more sensational story. Plus the death was reported by a relative who found him in his room at 3AM. Anyways, presumably there will be an investigation and we'll find out for sure one way or another.
As I posted in another thread, the news of Arguello's death has saddened me greatly. He was one of my all time favorite fighters. He was beloved here in Puerto Rico by many. Not only was he gracious in victory after his two defeats of hometown favorite Alfredo Escalera, but there was another connection as well.
Arguello just about every year paid homage to the late Roberto Clemente, the Puerto Rican baseball legend who died in a plane crash in 1972 while flying relief supplies to Managua, Nicaragua, after a devastating earthquake had killed many there.
Alexis, being the class act that he was, always paid his respects for a fellow great human being.
May you rest in peace.
RIP to a legend.
RIP to the nice guy of boxing and a tremendous fighter. One of the best ever.
Terrible, accident or not, good luck Champ.
Out of the ring, out of the circle of life, out into the spheres of eternity.
Condolences for those that are left.
