I couldn't imagine any other candidate, taken in context.. Amazed that noone else replied with this. I kind of took the thread to mean fights that COULD have gone the other way though, like just the decision.... Can't really think of one that would have changed a whole lot. Whittaker Chavez is probably the most notorious bad decision in recent decades for such a high profile fight... But would anything have gone differently if Sweet Pea got the nod? Dunno.

Surely the most dramatic night in the sports history. Sure thriller in manilla, rumble in jungle are the 2 biggest fights in the sport but for sheer history tyson-douglas has to rank up their as number 1
Tyson just turned up assuming all he had to do was step in the ring and blow out just another fighter which he did for the best part of 4 rounds. All of a sudden this complete nobody was actually hurting the unbeatable force and nobody but nobody would of gone on to predict what actually happened!!
Great shout.
You cannot look beyond Tyson -v- Douglas.;)

Tua's problem was that he was so one dimensional, it was embarrassing to watch.
I was actually feeling sorry for him after 6 rounds.:o
Re: What Fight Would Have Changed History The Most, If It Went The Other Way?
Ali - Cooper or Ali liston.considering Ali's part in civil rights movement and the veitnam war.
Re: What Fight Would Have Changed History The Most, If It Went The Other Way?
It is very difficult to answer to that question; That would change history in general or history of boxing? I've heard a lot of good calling there; Tyson-Duglas, Ali-Liston, Ali-Frasier III, Personally, I think that I would go with Foreman-Ali with rumble in the Jungle;
BEcause it is one of the most important fights that did catapult Ali's career and because this fight was the one that did throw forward the career of Don King in the skies.. and we all know how that old fat bastard just by himself changed the history of boxing and I can't imagine how it would be now if it would have taken all another direction.
Re: What Fight Would Have Changed History The Most, If It Went The Other Way?
Jones v tarver 2...there wouldn't have been need fot three and Roy might have tried his hand at Tyson...
Re: What Fight Would Have Changed History The Most, If It Went The Other Way?
Ali-Foreman. Had Foreman blown Ali out he would not have disappeared and remade himself. He would have been a right bastard for years and perhaps not had his rebirth in the late 80s, early 90s and would not have knocked out Michael Moorer. And Hulk Hogan would have gotten the grills.
Re: What Fight Would Have Changed History The Most, If It Went The Other Way?
Holyfield-Moorer 1. if Holyfield would have won that match, then there wouldn't have been Moorer-Foreman and Holyfield-Lewis would have happen a lot sooner. Instead they met in '99 and I believe that version of Holyfield was seriously on the decline from having his 3rd fight with Bowe and his 2 subsequent wars with Tyson, too many ring wars for Holy at that point.
Re: What Fight Would Have Changed History The Most, If It Went The Other Way?
I think everyone will agree when I say that Joe vs. Max could have potentially changed the world. So in those terms aside from Jeffries vs. Jackson I can't see any other fight doing so.
As for the history of the sport any one fight can change the history drastically when you think about it. But for the sheer impact I think Tyson vs. Douglas is the biggest.
Sanchez vs. Gomez
Arguello vs. Olivares
JCC vs. Martinez
Lopez vs. Rosendo 1
SRR vs. Maxim
Re: What Fight Would Have Changed History The Most, If It Went The Other Way?
There were alot of good ones that would have had huge cultural impacts such as...(mentioned prior)
Jeffreys Johnson
Schmelling Louis II
Ali Foreman... Just think about if he had walked out the winner... We may not know this loveable guy who sells grills today. Would he have ever adopted that personality?
There's so many... But a few that got me really thinking that have happened recently were...
Hopkins Taylor I... There probably never would have been a two and then what reason would bernard have had to move up? He was still fairly comfortable at MW and had Pavlik come along down there, I'm still pretty sure he'd box just as well. He may still have been champion today at MW.
Gatti Ward I: Had Ward lost he would have retired... Think about it...
This is a fun topic. Well done.
Re: What Fight Would Have Changed History The Most, If It Went The Other Way?
Henry Armstrong-Ceferino Garcia.
This was a controversial draw. But if it had officially went in Armstrong's favor, would he be regarded as the greatest p4p fighter and not Sugar Ray Robinson? If he had won this fight, this would mean he was the lineal champion of 4 of the original 8 weight classes.

In retrospect as i posted above SRR vs. Maxim...
Re: What Fight Would Have Changed History The Most, If It Went The Other Way?
Great thread Mick.
I've often wondered what would have happened if Marquez had gotten the decision many believed he deserved in the 2nd Pac fight. If Pac hadn't have won, he sure as shit wouldn't have gotten the opportunity to shock the world by stopping Oscar. Then look what Pac has gone on to do since. He would never have received these opportunities to do what he has done and us fans wouldn't be pissing our pants at the thought of Pac vs. Mayweather it what will be one of the most highly anticipated fights in boxing's history.
