Re: Alright lets get our picks in now
I’m picking Kessler just because cheating is not allowed; my second option would be Ward.

I'll keep a list on this thread of who picked who.
And I don't know yet, I haven't thought about it, I'll make a pick by today or before the fights Saturday.
Andre Ward: Amat, OumaFan, Magnum, Majesty
Carl Froch: LBSCFC, Master
Mikkel Kessler: Youngblood, Skel, RyanMan89, Gest12645, Spicoli, CFH, Killersheep, Kirkland Laing
Arthur Abraham: Jon09, KingFrank
Jermain Taylor: JT Rock, ViolentDemise
Andre Dirrell- OumaFan
Kessler. No doubt.
But I'd love to be wrong and Jermain Taylor win the whole thing.

Re: Alright lets get our picks in now
I think Kessler is the best of these guys, but wouldn't mind if Froch could do well.
-
Re: Alright lets get our picks in now
Saturdays going to be HUGE.....any sign of Wacko and his RBR ??? Would be a great series to mark a return!
If Ward wins the super 6 I'll change my name to 'Twinkie' for a month

Arthur Abraham is my pick.
The punchers don't usually win in boxing though. I think a boxer will take it and Ward is the best.
Abraham won't make it out of the first round, he's the big disappointment of the tournament imo.
I know juzz because a boxer is a puncher it dnt mean his gonna win but this tournament is based on points...my point begn that the punches have higher chances of winnin by KO and KO wins are worth more points therefore gettin ahead in the tournament.
i dnt see what people see in Ward hes not that good ok so he can box and his a lil fast but hes hasnt been tested yet at least not with boxers lik the ones in the super six.
Abraham wont make it out of the first round? You gotta be kiddin me Bilbo.

I'll go with King Arthur (Abraham) on this one.

Ill be shouting for Jermain but Kessler will win it:cool:

I'll go with Abraham, even though I think Kessler would whup him, and the super six wont even finish.

Re: Alright lets get our picks in now
I can see alot of new fans being made for each fighter, this is the best thing to come out of boxing for a long time.
Froch: its going to prove if he really is an elite despite glaring weakness
Kessler: Is he the current legit king pin at 168 based on merit or did he slide in to fill the void left from Calzaghe?
Taylor: With this new life given, will he put his late fight demons to rest and gain the momentum and mojo back he once had on his way to fulfilling his true potential?
Abraham: Is the beast from Armenia/Germany going to invade this tournament and prove he is all that is advertised?
Dirrell/Ward: Will these 2 bright and exciting young men grow to superstardom before our eyes?
So many questions, outcomes and variables to be considered, all for the good ;)

Re: Alright lets get our picks in now
Good thread ...and I'm a little torn in the decision. I'm afraid I'm looking at the Europeans to actually prove the stronger, and I think it'll be Kessler coming out on top if it actually gets to a conclusion.
I'd still love to see Froch do well, but I think a direct Kessler will find it hard to miss that glaring gap in Froch's defence.
-
Re: Alright lets get our picks in now
I was thinking on the same lines as Fenster, say for instance Kessler blasts Ward out in quick style lets says three rounds, basically a total beatdown. Then somehow Ward makes it to the final to fight Kessler again???
Or maybe there is a bad beatdown and the guy stock falls in the event and is not getting as much money as he thought and decides he cant be arsed with the tournament anymore??
If there is no schedule either surely a fighter can just say nah im not doing that or something similar when they come to sitting down for the next rounds of fights.

The Ring offered to supply belts to the 1978 Don King US championship tournament that had a huge negative fallout.
Can't a Ring champion be filled with the winner of the number 1 and the number 3 fighters? If Froch beat Dirrell and only lost to Kessler in the tournament...couldn't a Froch v. Kessler fight be for the Ring belt especially if Andrade beat Bute?

That would be monstrous. Doubt it will happen, but I'd love to see it. In fact, I think a Kessler v. Taylor fight would be fought at an amazingly high level of boxing. I'd love to hear Manny's round-by-round on that one.

I not saying he's the most skilled boxer, or fastest or strongest. But he is the most overall solid in all categories combined.
He is the complete package. I agree. I'm also impressed that he is willing to go anywhere to fight anyone. He fought Calzaghe in Wales, Mundine in Australia, and now Ward in Oakland? Even in Denmark, hasn't he caught wind about the raucous Oaktown fans?

Here's a cool tale-of-the-tape on Taylor v. Abraham: Jermain Taylor vs Arthur Abraham: Tale Of The Tape
Everyone's picking their winner, but how about explaining the reasoning given the Showtime match and point structure. Each fighter faces three opponents over the next 18 months. The top four fighters advance to the semi-finals where it is single elimination. The fighters receive 2 points for winning a fight, 1 extra point for a knockout, 1 point for a draw, and 0 points for losing.
I could see Froch beating Dirrell, but he then faces Kessler and that is a bad match up for the Cobra. Or, Froch loses both matches. Thus, I don't see how Froch gets passed the first round.
I could see Kessler losing to Ward on points in Oakland, but beating Froch. Or, Kessler wins both fights. Either way he makes it to the next round.
Who do Dirrell, Ward, Taylor, and Abraham fight after the first round? I'm sure Abraham and Taylor fight in the US. That'll help me decide the rest.

Damn this to me just about sums up the fight. Abraham has more power in those leg's than the chicken legged Taylor.Taylor the bigger man up top than the chicken chested Abraham. I think both guy's have good skill but I am going with Taylor for a UD.

Although we dont agree on much, in principle I'm with you on this but the reality is, Taylor has to pitch a shutout with at least 3 knockdowns to earn a draw in Germany with a Sauerland event..
Unfortunately if its a booger decision I can see Sauerland ruining this whole tournament. If AA or Taylor dont knock the other out and Taylor dominates the fight legitimately, I'll sure as hell be cringing when they go to the cards. With that many promoters involved each one isint going to want to see his fighter screwed like that...

I already went on record and stated do due the magnitude and talent involved I'm not even going to take a stab at mapping out a course for a favorite since the whole thing is so wide open, anything can happen and believe me it will.
Taylor is my feel good favorite and I am rooting for him 100%, my 2nd would be Abraham but its a bit of a conflict seeing their squared off for the 1st fight..
When the dust settles at tournament end and 1 of the 2 is standing I'll be satisfied. If it's Taylor than I'll be pretty damned pleased, I feel no one expects much from Jermain given his last few fights and has been pretty much written off as an elite fighter. The lack of pressure and expectation will prove beneficial for him as he flys under the radar. if he could put AA away than BAM!!! He's riding a wave of confidence coupled with his skill, athleticism and potential as he advances.. Thats the most basic way to explain my feel good pick;)

I honestly think we do agree on alot of thing's except David Haye. Anyway I hope Jermain gets a fair shake if he does well. It would suck if he looked good and finished strong only to find out it was a blowout on the cards.

Re: Alright lets get our picks in now
Put me down for Taylor. I'm such a big fan, my vote does to him even with my heavy doubt he can pull it off!hehe
-
Re: Alright lets get our picks in now
im going with JT on this one, hopefully he does come in with bad intention. When he does thats when his at his best.
-
Re: Alright lets get our picks in now
Man this would be easier the other way around cause I'd pick Taylor to loose for sure (at the same time I'll admit I'm a little shady and will root for the poor guy), but I pick either Abraham or ward. If I can only choose one put it on ward.

I am going with Ward, I believe he will have a loss if he has to fight Direll , other than that He wins.

Re: Alright lets get our picks in now
It's a tough choice.
I don't think it will be any of Froch, Ward or Taylor.
Froch because he doesn't have the skillset to get him through this tournament of five fights relying on power & heart. It dug him out of a hole against Taylor, but you can't rely on that every fight & I feel that's all he's got.
Ward still struggles to convince me. He has a questionable power & chin. Yes he may outbox more than a few fighters along the way, but I just think he's liable to drop too many rounds & I'm not sure he could deal with the bigger punchers in this.
Taylor is either already on the slide or will be as the tournament progresses. 18 months is a long time in boxing & I just don't see JT having enough to carry him to the finish.
The 3 that I'm obviously torn between are Kessler, Abraham & Dirrell.
Kessler appears to be the most exceptional fighter in the bunch, I find it hard to really see anything that he does poorly. However, I think he can struggle with speed a bit, I felt he dropped rounds to Mundine on this basis & it obviously affected him against Calzaghe. I think he's the best, but I can also see him losing one along the way, maybe at the semi-final stage.
Abraham I think is a guy who doesn't look as good as he is. We all see the flaws & yet he seems to find a way to win even if he's having an off-night. I think this tournament could be his motivation to really step it up. He's also very good at boxing the bigger man & has enough that I would fancy him to beat the vast majority of fighters. His defence is very good & I expect him to beat Taylor similar to how I believe Winky Wright did. Still, one key problem is that apart from his win over Miranda he's as unproven at SMW as Dirrell or Ward. It's hard to bank on him when we don't know how he'll deal with these bigger guys.
Dirrell really shouldn't be near the discussion. He's the least experienced, hasn't always looked great & there are questions over his chin. But, I just feel his natural gifts exceed that of every other fighter in the tournament. A lot relys on the Froch fight. If he wins that than I think he will start to have the necessary experience to win the whole thing.
A lot of that is due to the length of the tournament. If the final was next summer I'd favour Abraham or Kessler. However, it's almost a year after that & I feel Dirrell & Ward are the only 2 fighters with no wear & tear on them. As I said, I don't rate Ward that much, so I think that if Dirrell can get past Froch, he will start to peak as a fighter as the tournament goes on, whilst I suspect the others might start to slip a bit. Also the fact no one else picked him made me want to give him a pity vote. So despite the fact, a lot tells me it will be Abraham or Kessler, I'm gonna go with Andre Dirrell. :-X

He was knocked down in 05, turns out he wasnt knocked down in the amateur fights. Still don't buy that he has a questionable chin. He took a few solid shots from Miranda and looked fine.
