He doesn't have the best track record when it comes to paying his trainers. Anybody know when his court case with Billy Graham is, it's supposed to be around now. The new guy trainer better make sure he gets a signed contract. You can tell Ricky is going to make it as a promoter, he's already trying to stiff everybody he can before he even stops fighting.
....and Hatton is damaged goods it's win win....if Ricky picks up one of them as a trainer the expectations for him to do well are lowered and one of those guys gets a shot at trying to prove themselves as good trainer. I admit Fenech is probably closer to what we'll see Ricky get rather than Rooney as Kev hasn't done much at all recently.
It is CRAZY to think someone like Roach would waste his time on Ricky right now especially considering Amir Khan may already be at a level where he can beat Hatton.
I actually think Hatton needs somebody who can do what McGirt did for Gatti - get him fucking boxing again. You could argue Gatti was even more damaged goods than what Hatton is now, given that Hatton has been knocked out reasonably quickly by Pac and only really took a good beating from Mayweather. Gatti was in WAR AFTER WAR.
And I'd wager that Ricky actually has better boxing skills than what Gatti did. If he can add another string to his bow he could fight and fight well for another two or three years. But as Apollo said to Rocky before the Clubber Lang rematch... It takes a helluva man to change.
Gatti was more malleable than I think Hatton is, Hatton is set in his ways and I just don't see him changing. Gatti never was the same fighter when he got in with McGirt, he was always fun to watch but he peaked vs De la Hoya.
I think Ricky's upperbody movement is too stiff and his defense has never impressed me much. He's a guy who bores in like a bull and fires off punches and the problem is elite fighters have shown you can catch him coming in EVERY SINGLE TIME
Yeah I suppose so... I mean, maybe I and others had an inflated view of Hatton's boxing ability following the Ben Tackie fight. Tackie is so slow, you'd be hard pressed not to outbox him. He's an opponent designed to make better boxers look good.
Still Hatton has skills - if he wants to change he can. Trouble is, he also has an awful lot of money. It's hard to spent hours getting in shape, quitting drinking and learning new skills when you're already a very rich man.
Shame though.
Anyone see a parallel between Hatton and Hamed? Both had great early success with Warren. Both had a great win against a long time champ (Tom 'Boom Boom' Johnson in Hamed's case). Both got rich, successful and fired their trainers. Both ending up getting owned by a future hall of famer (In Hatton's case two). Both are now awfully fat.
