I'm an objective boxing fan....
sadly, Philippine boxing will never get its place if corrupt managers and promoters will feed promising fighters to the lions. Eversince Pacmania occured, each promising prospect is rushed on to something dangerous. I am not saying this as an excuse. But take a look at Montiel Vs. Ciso Morales. The kid was visibly unfit and not ready to fight a veteran.
On the other hand, other young fighters are pitted against Thai veterans and get this, they are scheduling fights in Thailand even without sufficient permits from GAB (the Philippines' governing body in all sports). In order to compete with the world, we Filipinos should not only focus on Pacquiao alone. We should focus on developing the sport and setting aside personal greed..
I'm definitely a 0% 'Business Fan'
I am a nostalgic boxing fan, missing the great heavyweight fights of the 90's, a peak RJJ and the punching power of Julian Jackson. :)
Going back to this thread, I earlier categorized myself as 25% nationalistic fan, higher than just about everyone else that has posted on here (although I'm sure if everyone was 100% honest, there'd be a few people over the 25% mark). But I got to cut myself some slack. Even though our (Puerto Rico) biggest rivalry is with Mexico, I've always had a handful of Mexican fighters that I've been a fan of throughout their careers. This comes to mind mostly because of recent threads about Juan Manuel Marquez, of whom I've always been a big fan. To name some prominent Mexican fighters (or of Mexican descent) and whether I'm a fan or not, I'd list the following:
Big fan: Ricardo "Finito" Lopez, MAB, JMM
Lukewarm: Salvador Sanchez, Erik Morales
NOT a fan: JCC (or Junior), DLH, Vargas (although I've softened on him a bit)
20% Nationalistic
10% Hater
40% Objective
30% Underdog, I made this up. I always seem to pull for the heavy dogs, or if someone is getting beat bad I want them to turn it around.
Saw the "patriotic fan" thread and thought I'd bump this up. "Patriotic fan" is basically among the popular types of fans. I myself have a lot of that (in an objective, knowledgeable sort of way ;) ).
I think most people have some "patriotic fan" in them to some extent, although with some it could be very little. It may depend on where you're from. If your country is rich in boxing tradition, well then it makes sense that you'd have a considerable amount of "patriotic fan" in you. The converse is also true. If your country hasn't produced much in the way of boxing champions, but you're still a boxing fan, you might not have too much "patriotic fan" in you. Of course as in all generalities, I'm sure there are exceptions.
