Yeah and save lives, educate kids in school. Yeah all fire fighters are pussys, never risk their health and don't do any good in the comunity. Well not as much good as a brainwashed troop whos only objective is kill or be killed. God I wish I could do that.
People forget. There is a fine line between bravery and stupidity. IMO you cross the line into stupidity as soon as you sign up for the army.

No you haven't touch a nerve, this thread isn't about American's foreign policy or it's wars, it's about a guy wanting opportunities in life, and he's getting advice from people and well wishers. But you on the other hand came in and start going off about wars, innocent dead, etc. You managed or attempting to derail this thread.
All you have done is serious trolling. I think it's pretty pathetic that someone's highlight of the day is troll around. BTW, I thought you said you're done with trolling? http://www.saddoboxing.com/boxingfor...-my-chest.html

I'm not trolling at all. And the fact you resort to saying I am says alot. This is something I feel strongly about. And what I'm saying is very very very very very very simple. EVEN you might get it.
DON'T JOIN THE ARMY YOU HAVE MORE GOING FOR YOU AND MORE OPPOTUNITIES THAN RESORTING TO THIS.
MR NO CONTEST YOU ARE BETTER THAN THIS AND MORE DESERVING THERE ARE OTHER MUCH MORE WORTH WHILE THINGS YOU CAN DO.

You could have just said:
I wouldn't personally join the Army, I think it's all about the control of others from the politicians right down through ranks then out onto the countries we move against, instead of for the protection of others at home or there.

No, you are trolling and it's what is allowed on this board for you and I seriously doubt you feel strongly about this subject. Whether it's some boxing thread to more serious issues like this thread, you come in and troll and derail the topic at hand. It's an obvious pattern.
Okay since you are saying you are not here to troll, then let's see you give some decent advice for this young man then? Besides just typing out, "Don't join army, there's lots of worthwhile things to do." Okay what are they? Let's hear the specifics? Go into the details of what they are.

Why did you stop being a Fire fighter?

Re: I am attempting to join the ARMY.
When topics like this come up, I think it's important to recognize that we all have different perspectives on contentious issues.
No Contest is a long-time member of the site and it's obvious that this is something he's thought about for a while prior to making his decision. Calling each other names and ridiculing each others beliefs/careers etc. doesn't do anything other than get people upset and it's sure as shit not going to change anyone's opinions, least of all the guy who's already decided to join the military. I think the best thing we can do is wish No Contest good luck and success in his new career.

I just want to add that, in the past, I have been guilty of saying some pretty assholish things on these sorts of topics as well, so I don't want anyone to think I'm trying to assume a position of moral superiority here because that is not my intention.
While my position on certain subjects has changed a bit over time, I still feel that we can all get together and share our opinions on whatever issues we're discussing, but I think we should try to do so in as respectful a manner as possible, especially when it's regarding the personal lives of our members. I've learned that that is the only real way any meaningful dialogue takes place.

Re: I am attempting to join the ARMY.
I look at the quality of life for most Americans, and then I look at the quality of life in some of these other countries and I dont think America is that tyranical. Just look at the amount of illegal immigrants trying to get into our country from Mexico. Is that because they want to be oppressed? I have the freedom to say all kinds of bullshit(i.e. hornfinger:p) and thats my right as an American. Do you think people in countries with dictatorships can do that?

That's nice. But before you leave tell your mom to buy herself a nice black dress and get ready for your funeral. Sorry to hear that buddy. Unfortunately my mother and father have already passed away. I will however be taking the 400,000 dollar life insurance, which would go to my sister. She can buy a nice black dress and handle the funeral if that were to happen. Sheesh I knew I was going to regret posting this thread. Watch with my luck I dont get accepted, and then the real funny shit is going happen.

And this is why my buddy joined the Navy instead. Don't have to be on the front lines, least likely to die, from what I've heard also lots of skills and trades to learn that gets you ready for real world, plus you also can get the GI bill too if you're thinking of education. My buddy that went to the art school didn't want to be on the front lines or have bullets fly over his head so he passed on joining the marines or army and went navy instead.
But anyways good luck to whatever branch of the armed forces you're joining Nocontest.

Re: I am attempting to join the ARMY.
Regret nothing about asking and delving into different perspectives. Rather hash it out prior then jump in clueless....or turn around 20 yrs from now and say woulda, coulda, shoulda. Be honest with yourself and family and the only thing worse then failure is not trying to succeed in the first place, and if that means joining or means you decide not to, its you who will have to live with it. Best of luck bud.
Got to say its not totally the case to think Navy doesn't see frontlines as today your front line could be just driving down the road. My Father went in Navy way back rather then Marine or Reg Army and next thing he knew was flying dust off with both off the ship as a door gunner. Sometimes they grab the pieces where they fit then and now. Not to mention the EOD techs

Yes, I kind of think the same way these days.
Of course, I totally agree with Hornfingers arguments and that is one of the reasons I abstained from this thread. Diz started a thread like this a while back and I wasn't very nice about the military and I don't really want to rain on another persons parade again. I also started a thread a while back asking if the army was only for idiots. In the later thread I had every right to stomp my views all over the place as it was my thread and I had fire in my belly, so in this thread I think it right to stay cool.
I would certainly never pursue the work that No Contest is for obvious political, moral and ideological reasons, but each man to their own. I like the chap and wish him well in life. I'm sure I will rail against the military at some point in the future, but not now. :p
As for America being a great country, I happen to think so too in many regards. But though it doesn't impose tyranny at home (economic tyranny is currently expanding), it certainly has imposed both military and economic tyranny upon far too many nations world wide. It isn't wise to stick ones head in the sand about the many and obvious wrongs commited by the US government/military. I always get labelled an American hater and I can see where that view comes from and in some of my more outspoken moments I have been particularly harsh, but my concerns are valid. I am going to leave it at that though. If I have a bee in my bonnet I will start my own threads like I have always done. I seem to have lost all my fire though, I am just feeling far too nice these days. Must be the lack of friends.

Re: I am attempting to join the ARMY.
I think there some perceptions of Soldiers on here that aren't necessarily true. Most of the Soldiers I know didn't join or stay in b/c they endorse the current or past nation's foreign policy. Most people I know joined b/c they wanted money for college, job training, they wanted to get out of the ghetto/backwoods town they grew up in or they simply didn't know what they wanted to do in life and figured the military would give them some life skills. Very few Soldiers have or will every use deadly force. I'd guess less than 15% of current active duty have ever needed to pull the trigger and spend most of their time genuinely helping their fellow man. For most military service is just a job that they happen to wear a uniform to. I'm sure I come across as an alpha male type a personality and cowboy American and while lots of Infantryman fit that mold most Soldiers are very regular family folks that simply aren't that informed about American foreign policy. They do their job and deploy when and where they are told. I joined out of a desire to serve but I stayed b/c I was good at my job and most importantly I truly love training, leading, mentoring and generally just hanging out with Soldiers. It is not a career for everyone but for certain people it will be a very rewarding 4, 10, 20 or 30 years.

Specifics, really?
Join the abulence service, hard to get into it's a challenge, you help people.
Join the fireservice, see above even more relevant than the above if you want that military type disciplin aspect.
Find the thing you really love doing and then think of /find a way of making money out of it. To extend that become a teacher.... which brings me onto...
go back into education
Learn a trade and start your own business be your own boss.
-plumbing
-electrician
-gass fitter
-construction
Suck a dick. Yes be a prostitute. Still a more worth while job than doing a bombing campeign in afghanistan you'll earn more money and you can choose your own hours.
There you go some (I could write a hell of alot more) specifics all more worth while than joining the army.

It's called Respect. Respect for other people feelings and Respect for other peoples choices in life (be they right or wrong)
"Freedom of Speech" is a basic right we all are given in our countries (Not all have it) given by the government and protected by the military.
In your opinion, you are not trolling. In my opinion, you are shitting on mine and every one else's family who has every fought in a war, served in the military or died, to help protect your right/freedom(s) to say what every fancies your thoughts on the day.
Respect cost you nothing to give to some one but can cost you plenty when you lose it.

People forget. There is a fine line between bravery and stupidity. IMO you cross the line into stupidity as soon as you sign up for the army.
Yeah no one should join the army that way other countries who have people join there army can take advantage of you. Have some respect people are risking there lives to keep you me and everyone of this forum safe from threats like terrorism. Would you rather wake up to bombs going of where you live? Because i know i sure as hell am glad there are soldiers keeping that threat away from my home and country. I'd say the real stupidity can be seen in a man who sits behind his computer saying every soldier is a murderer fighting for oil. Talk about brainwashed you must have repeated it about 3/4 times and these men and women who chose to fight are the brainwashed ones...

If everyone in every country refused to be in the army would we have to worry?
Especially us in the west as no one has the missile capability to hit us from there country. And even if they did you'd litterally see the missile coming from a mile a way and would be able to intercept it.
In the west we don't have wars now anyway, they are bombing campeigns. when was the last time that during 'war time' any western country was bombed/invaded by a foreign enemy?
Terrorism threat? what terrorism threat? It is an undeniable statistical fact that more people die each year getting stung by bees than they do getting killed in 'terrorist' attacks. So if you really want to save people in your country it might be a more worth while cause to become a bug exterminator. You'll be saving alot more people in your country that way.

Unless you like killing poor, weaker people than yourself to rob their country of their natural recourses of course.
This is your 1st post in this thread no? It definitely sounds like 1 is trolling here or attempting to be as insulting as possible to the op of this thread. Even Miles who definitely is against ideas like this, refrained from coming into this thread insulting people on what they want to do with their life.
Said it all already

It's called Respect. Respect for other people feelings and Respect for other peoples choices in life (be they right or wrong)
"Freedom of Speech" is a basic right we all are given in our countries (Not all have it) given by the government and protected by the military.
In your opinion, you are not trolling. In my opinion, you are shitting on mine and every one else's family who has every fought in a war, served in the military or died, to help protect your right/freedom(s) to say what every fancies your thoughts on the day.
Respect cost you nothing to give to some one but can cost you plenty when you lose it.
Both my grand parents fought in WW2. And I know that one of them (who actually got medals for being a war hero) was far from proud of his service.
Bombing afghanistan and iraq is not protecting my freedom, my freedom was never in danger from either of those countries. The faulklands didn't protect my freedom, Vietnam didn't protect my freedom. All were pointless and just cost lives very very needlessly, and were all put into operation on a lie. The sooner people realize this and stop encouraging each other to go out and do these stupid things the sooner we can stop the pointless loss of our loved ones.
In my life time I'm not greatful to the army for anything. NOT ONE THING!
The only thing I am pro war about, is it is the last line of natural selection we have. Although that is not really true anymore when you look at the statistics of troops from the west who died in afghanistan/iraq compared to the number they anhiliated.
Seeing as this is in the 'let's get it on' section of this forum I am breaking no rules by EXPRESSING MY OPINION on this topic.

What about SALT II?

Re: I am attempting to join the ARMY.
SALT II?
Please enlighten me. This is obviously something I've missed and have no clue about and could be the thing that makes me change my mind on this whole issue.

Strategic Arms Limitation Talks - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I have no idea how this could be relevant to the current discussion.

If we did that this forum would cease to function.

Re: I am attempting to join the ARMY.
I'm just sitting here wearing a monocle and eating the popcorn. Hornfinger is quite right, but Boozeboxer has truly altered the course of the thread through the old fashioned SALT 2 diversion tactic.

Not stopping you from expressing your opinion, Far from it.
And you are not breaking any rules in this section of the forum. And thank you for pointing out witch section we are in as any thing goes down. (Forgot that for a moment)
Don't know about your grandparents, but if you were my kid, you would not be walking for a month. Don't give 2 shits where you are from, where your grand parents fought or in witch war. Common courtesy is some thing most kids were taught some years ago. You young fuck wits seem to have lost that training or your parents forgot what it meant. No problem, I can come down to your level and converse in child speak.
Your opinion means jack to me.Could careless what you think about the army, the government or even me. You are so low on my to do list that it might be a year before I even think about you again.
Or in other words, talking about pond scum would be more interesting than listening to the dribble that pours out of your mouth.

You would beat your kid for expressing an entirely valid viewpoint?
Hornfinger has said nothing particularly controversial. Sure, he could have said it with more tact, but ultimately he is quite right. The Vietnam war WAS built upon a deception. The Iraq war was again based upon deception. How dare Hornfinger suggest that those that went there to serve were in some way complicit in the deception and ultimately helped to kill many millions of people. Sure, they may have been ignorant or else just didn't care about the politics, but they still partook in a dishonest war effort. Are you suggesting that he is making that up and is out of line for suggesting that this was the case?
But sure, whip off the belt and beat the kid who reads between the lines. Gotta make those darn kids learn some respect!

You do not listen miles, you see the word beating and you get all rightist.
The words "Disrespect" and "Common Courtesy" just slip by or having no meaning in this thread. There are no valid reasons for "Disrespect", do not care how old you are. Hiding under "My Opinion" is nothing more than a cope out (Excuse's are like ass holes, every one has one and they use it often). But that's ok, he's young. So are the whole Generation Y, you know, the give it to me, do not deserve it but I want it and I want now generation. Fuck every one else so long as my opinion is heard generation.
What ever happen to family values? Not here, not now. Not in this time.
I am glad I am getting to age when my back on all the excuse's people throw out there and just walk away from it. The ignore button works find here, and I'm getting good use out of it.
BTW, miles, nothing personal in there towards you. ;D

That's not the point, and you're being bias and dismissing the man's words because it doesn't fall in line with yours. The point he and I was talking about earlier was the word RESPECT. You and Hornfinger do know what that word means right?
In this thread take a guess on which member(s) comes in with blatant disrespect insulting the OP? Just take a guess? Yeah you have freedom of speech and all that jazz. And no one is stopping you guys from expressing it. But where is the respect? And the op is a long time member. All he is asking for forum members here is to wish him good luck and that he feels that this is the best option for him in terms of career and money for college.
You and Hornfinger seriously have a problem with that? I've been here on this forum for almost 2 years and almost every single one of the guy's post is a windup to get under the skin of other people. We all do it from time to time. But the guy does it constantly and this thread isn't for that.

You don't see the blatant disrespect in this 1st post of your buddy in this thread? And Ghost is right, this generation has a major problem with the words respect and common courtesy.
With your way of thinking and reasoning I can go tell my neighbor right in her face that I don't like her and think she's a disgusting old hag and say, "Hey I'm just expressing my opinion, nothing controversial about my view." But you know what? It's rude, disrespectful, crass, and lacks any sense of decency or courtesy as a neighbor.
