I guess "hero's" are a little like beauty, it's in the eye of the beholder. In my humble opinion Ali is a hero to many Americans, and just guessing, i'd say if you ask most black Americans if Ali was a hero, the overwhelming majority would say yes.
I agree that "hero" could mean many different things to many different people, like someone said, hero's don't have to be perfect and none ever are.
Good point on your possible definitions of "Hero." In the two suggested ideas you explained I would agree with you.
So sure he could be one or one billions "Hero"
BUT.............................
The Question Was......."American Hero" This he is not. Hero and American Hero are two different things
AMERICAN HEROS DIE EVERYDAY FOR OUR COUNTRY AND TO PROTECT US HERE.....MILITARY, POLICE, FIRE....
DON'T TWIST THE TERMS....IS IT AMERICAN HERO OR HERO? ANYONE CAN HAVE A HERO. SURE IT'S AN OPINION BUT ALI WAS ABOUT AS MUCH OF AN "AMERICAN HERO" AS AL SHARPTON
AND NO IT'S NOT ABOUT RACE...BECAUSE MLK WAS AFRICAN AMERICAN AND FOR SURE AN "AMERICAN HERO."

Re: Is Muhammad Ali an American Hero?
I have always regarded Ali as a charismatic man that stood up fro his rights and he did it legally. I did not feel that the black Muslims deserved to have Ali as part of their faith because they hung him out to dry. They used his name and names of other athletes to legitimize their cause? What I am saying is Ali acted within his rights as a human being he wanted no part of the war and blew his fortune to prove his point. I was one of those youths that did not have the money Ali blew for his principles but he paved the way for others that would face this problem in the future and America had racists in high places. Hero or man of principle? I went to war and all I learned was how to have a thick skin and see first hand a thousand ways a man can lose his soul and still walk the earth in an empty suit. Hero? Yes I think so for sparing himself what I learned. One day as I got off the chopper headed for my unit, I saw something written on a man's helmet that changed the way I feel about politics and hypocrites in general. "Never have so many been fucked by so few." Heroism or principle?
Re: Is Muhammad Ali an American Hero?
The question isn't if Muhammad Ali is an American hero, because you'd have to be crazy to argue otherwise.
The question is whether or not heshould be. I think he was overrated as a person.
