Yes news of the Freitas fight was astonishing and reading about it put a smile on my face. I believe I was able to see some of it on youtube as well. Unbelievable. But, even faded world class fighters will put a beating on guys who are simply wannabees who lack 1/10th the natural talent of the older former champion.

Hopkins v Trinidad. What a great fight for Hopkins.

Re: Most one-sided upset of all time?
Barrera vs Prince Naseem is another one.

There seems to be a bit of rewriting of history with regards to Calzaghe's fight against Lacy. A mate of mine placed a bet the day of the fight that had Lacy as slight underdog. Must admit that I was the one who said that was worth a punt (I'm starting to believe that I have the ability to influence fights by predicting a winner. If you hear me waxing lyrical about a fighter on these boards, bet on the other guy).
Even the "experts decide" section run on the BBC website had Calzaghe to win, with Bunce, Woodhall and McGuigan all tipping Joe to win on points.
Fast forward a few years and in the eyes of his fans Joe overcame the very gods of Olympus.

Re: Most one-sided upset of all time?
Ishida dropping Kirkland 3 times in the first round for the KO xD
Couldn't of happened to a more deserving prick.

Re: Most one-sided upset of all time?
Lloyd Honeyghan / Donald Curry. Curry was never the same after this fight.
This was possibly the best performance from a British fighter on foreign soil.

Re: Most one-sided upset of all time?
Terry Norris over Ray Leonard has to be up there.

I'd say he was a clear favorite at the time.
I believe bookmakers had it 4/1 in favor of Bramble.

The british oddsmakers and experts may have had it more even, I think according to the american "experts" cal was shit n was getting spanked by lacy.

Re: Most one-sided upset of all time?
Pinckney/Jr Jones. Darryl was like 20-20-2 or something as was supposed to be a tune up. He almost took Juniors head off. Jones then went on to beat Mab twice.
Randall/Chavez. Frankie was like a 15 to 1 underdog and Sr was undefeated at least on paper in 90 contests. Randall was actually older then him.
Sanders/Wlad. Corrie was a 20 to 1 underdog and was dragged off the golf course.
Ali was an 8 to 1 underdog when he fought Liston.

I'm on my phone so I can't be bothered to check if these have been mentioned but ones that quickly spring to mind:
BHop whopping Tito
Raheem beating Morales

Re: Most one-sided upset of all time?
Bonecrusher Smith vs Tim Witherspoon 2
Philip Holiday vs Jeff Fenech
Vernon Forrest vs Shane Mosley 1
George Foreman vs Joe Frazier 1
Gaby Canizales vs Richie Sandoval
Corrie Sanders vs Wladimir Klitschko
-
Re: Most one-sided upset of all time?
Can't forget Roy Jones spanking James Toney.

Can Foreman-Frazier really be called an upset? I don't know who was favored in the betting... but Foreman had a reputation for being a badass, and was all wrong for Smokin' Joe.

I guess it was seen differently across the pond in the UK. I remember the majority sentiment being that Lacy was an absolute killer in his prime, and Calzaghe was an overhyped, protected UK slapper with brittle hands who was finally going to be exposed.
In fact I even remember a couple of big British boxing fans I chatted with on another forum who didn't have much hope for Calzaghe.

Salido beating Juanma in there 1st fight was a shock. Salido was about 10/1 if I remember correctly.
Balboa v Lang 1. I thought Rocky was unstoppable

Re: Most one-sided upset of all time?
Harry Greb / Gene Tunney. Greb the Middleweight gave Tunney a frightful beating.
the only lose of his career.

Thats a good one. One could also include half of the careers of Langford and Barbados Joe.

Thought about this one but really Rosario was still close to being Rosario. I'd go with his bulldozing of a streaking Loreto Garza yrs later and a weightclass removed. He looked like stale toast with Nazario in loss and Garza was in talks with JCC but it got delayed.
Fighting Harada coming in as a sub and ko'ing Pone Kingpetch comes to mind. Simon Browns ko over Terry Norris was great but honestly he shouldn't have been ruled as a massive underdog. Props to Terry for masterclass boxing in rematch though! Vic Toweel beating Manuel Ortiz makes the grade! J.C Rubio with 20 losses coming in and schooling pumped up HBO flavor of the month Francisco Bajado is a fav ;D Mayorga blitzing Six heads Lewis ??

Re: Most one-sided upset of all time?
Winky Wright against Shane Mosely, I am sure Shane was favourite and Winky out boxed him with ease twice. The second one was closer but Winky won.

Re: Most one-sided upset of all time?
I didn't think Oscar would cop such a beating by the Pacman, i really thought Pacquiao was in trouble before this fight. What i also didn't count on was Oscar's health and fitness team being so ridiculously stupid in the lead up to the fight! Oscar is guilty too, did he not know what was happening to his own body? It was still a shock to see DLH have the living suitcase belted out of him.
-
Re: Most one-sided upset of all time?
Ingemar Johansson/Floyd Patterson.
Patterson down 6 times.

Agreed I was surprised that Pac Man beat Oscar but that was Oscar’s fault and even if it was a light middle Pac Man would have won but on points. I also though Oscar would beat Floyd at light middle but he lost that one too.

Re: Most one-sided upset of all time?
Lacy getting exposed the way he did was a massive upset as no one except Joe seemed to know what was about to happen. I guess this was a case of boxers seeing more :othan we could.
I think Hopkins has done this the most (maybe more than any othet fighter) but I think Jeff getting exposed was the biggest one sided upset.

I was dead wrong about Lacy, thought he'd take Joe out. And British fans did not mind rubbing it in either ;D
But, thing that bothered me about that one was that A LOT of fans on here at the time were picking Robin Reid to beat Jeff Lacy, then when he got smashed they just pretended it never happened and went on to the next hope which was Joe.
Hopkins def has come through with a large amount of surprising victories. He's been very consistent over the years and made me happy to have picked him every time. Except last time out against Dawson, oh and his razor thin loss to Calzaghe. Fuckin Calzaghe....:-X;D
