Think I've heard him use it in about 6 -10 fights.

Ring inactivity: 294 days; 346 days; blah, blah......
I have yet to see a fighter suffer in fights because of this (with the exception Ali, but that's different)
As if boxers sit on their asses the entire time in between fights.

No.
To me, ruined is where the other fighter is never the same after that.
Usually a grueling, punishing fight, where the fighter suffers irreversible wear and tear.
Another is "cherry-picking".
It's overused for sure. Cherry picking occurs... but not every soft touch a fighter intermixes in between tough fights should be considered cherry-picking. Once a cherry-picker, always a cherry-picker. Meaning that fighters that become known for that tend to do so more often than everybody else. But not everybody is a cherry-picker.
How about "exposed"?
That's a really overused term. What is exposed, anyway? To me is where the fighter's record was built with smoke and mirrors (parade of tomato cans, for example). A bogus record just waiting to be exposed by the first good opponent a fighter faces. That is exposed. But it's overused. Every time a fighter loses, he's been exposed. B.S.
I'm as guilty of using these terms as anybody else, but usually try to reserve them for cases that truly merit their use.
Where to begin ?
There are so many things that people say in boxing that are over-used. The ones that come to mind :
"Styles make fights" (Like they are trying to sound enlightened without actually having to make any analysis whatsoever)
"Gunna bring my A game" (Yeah because he normally brings his C and D game to a fight)
Before The Fight : "Its been a perfect training camp, everything went to plan and I feel 100% coming into the fight."
After The fight : "Things didn't really go well in training. I injured my hand in sparring early on and didn't get the rounds in I should have. Also, I was attacked by a bear while I was out running, he mauled me pretty good. Thats why my performance was a bit off tonight"
"I just didn't have it tonight. I dont know what it is, I just didn't have it tonight." (Usually said by a fighter who thinks on anothe night he would have had him)
'im in the best shape of my career' (zzzzzzzzzzzz)
"I don't want to take anything away from (opponents name), but......" (This is a classic one)
''That wasn't the real (......) in there tonight'' (Using cliches and talking in the third person. Thats annoying)
"Once he hits you, you stay hit" (What does that even mean ? One of the commentators said it before the Deontay Wilder fight)
"I never watch tapes of my opponents" (Classic macho boxer talk where he's tryna act like a real bad ass)

My name is overused in boxing ? well that's nice to know.
I don't think even you could call me a boy , but if you think I have youthful looks then thank you for the compliment.

I hate the notion that a challenger has to 'take' the belt from the champion. Winning the fight on a round by round basis often doesn't appear to be enough. And that's wrong.

You can't just waltz back into my life and utter the words 'it's bollocks' and then disappear again 😄

Re: Most incorrectly and overused terms in boxing (by fans)
Ducking. It seems like people like to throw this out whenever their favorite fighters don't get the fight they want.
Shot. Someone has a bad loss and all of a sudden they are shot fighters. They then come back and have some good victories, go figure. Could it be they just weren't as good as you thought they were?

No they were "shop worn" or had "too many miles on their tires."

Re: Most incorrectly and overused terms in boxing (by fans)
I can't believe we've all missed this one:
"Ruined his legacy"
Honestly..... who the hell are we to proclaim such a damning statement? Once a legacy is made... it's made. A guy who wins several championships in different weights.... who wins several epic, classic battles that stick in our minds... who conducts himself with the utmost class and respect for the sport of boxing. How do you all of sudden "undo" that?
Let me clarify. There is a way to ruin your legacy. Say a fighter in addition to being a champion has conducted himself with class, the way Alexis Arguello used to do. All of a sudden he takes to cheating.... to taking drugs.... to disparaging his opponents.... to beating women. That, in my mind, is how you ruin your legacy. But the "W's" and "L's" already in your record are going to stay there, no matter what. So what if you fight a bit too long and get knocked out along the way? It may not be in your health's best interests, and it may damage your win percentage a bit. But does that really ruin your legacy? I say no.
It's an overused phrase in boxing by boxing fans.
-
Re: Most incorrectly and overused terms in boxing (by fans)
Yeah I never liked the "ruined his legacy" thing. If you want to evaluate a guy, you take him during his prime.

Another one that just fell out of the sky....... ;D
TBE
Not merely overused, but driven into the ground by Rocco, who probably uses it as a new substitute for "bestest".
As in.........
"Air Heads Berries Cap'n Crunch is TBE cereal."
"Play-Doh is TBE toy."
"SpongeBob SquarePants is TBE television program."

Re: Most incorrectly and overused terms in boxing (by fans)
This is for Dark Lord Al. Thanks for having the nerve to say that great is an overused term in sports and that can be the truth in any subject. Great according to Webster's dictionary is much more than ordinary size, extent, etc. (The great Lakes) We're talking much above the average. Then we talk about intense or great pain, a great power or a great writer. Something is eminent which simply means that it was meant to happen. Most important and excellent, skillful,a distinguished person. I think about this time Webster was playing with himself. The Thesaurus said and I'll paraphrase because I don't want to put anyone to sleep, Noble, grand, exalted, renowned ,celebrated, high, I'll bet Webster has been that way too, stately, imposing, OK so maybe at the stare down that's true Remember Sonny Liston and Floyd Patterson. There was much more bullshit and most of the announcers at fights with a lack of a real opinion or belief toss it our way and it is contagious. Well being a veteran of being punished by teachers in elementary school I was once punished by reading one of the dullest books in the world from cover to cover and I am going to stop here because where I acknowledged your opinion of great is the book I was punished with. Great is overused.
