Re: Antonio Gomez ~ "El Leon de Cumana"
Hey Frankie,
In 1971,
Round 3 > between Shozo Saijo vs. Antonio Gomez >
Was 'miles' better than any Round of the Joe Frazier vs. Muhammad Ali bout.
Not a 'single' clinch, and non-stop punching.
Antonio Gomez 'floored' the Champion at {1:12} of Round 3, when he caught Shozo Saijo with a
'short' but vicious right-cross, and a follow-up left-hook as Shozo was going down.
But the WBA Featherweight Champion was 'not done', as he got up and literally beat the 'Hell' out of Antonio
for most of the rest of Round 3, until getting 'staggered' at the {2:59 Mark}.
Clearly, the 'Best Round of the Year' {1971}

~ Shozo Saijo vs. Antonio Gomez ~
After a 'wild' Round 3, which could easily be nominated for 'Round of the Year'
Round 4
Was relatively mild, as both fighters fought cautiously, and were now wary of each other's
power.
The Champion {Shozo Saijo} used a long left-jab, and movement.
https://encrypted-tbn2.gstatic.com/i...Ezy8c25Aqvverw
The Challenger {Antonio Gomez} was content to send out a left-jab while leaping forward,
and then going low to avoid any counters.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Round 5
Both come out to Center-Ring, and jab while circling each other. Antonio is up on his toes, and is
moving well.
Shozo is loading up, looking for 'one-punch'. Antonio sneaks in '2' left-jabs at the {0:13 Mark}.
Antonio is now bopping on his toes, and then bending low. Shozo flicks out '2' left-jabs at the {0:18 Mark}.
Both are still at Center-Ring. Shozo scores with a good left-jab at the {0:24 Mark}. Antonio continues to
'bob-and-weave'.
Antonio is short with a left-jab at the {0:36 Mark}. Shozo comes back with a sharp left-jab that snaps
Antonio's head back.
Antonio counters with a good left-hand at the {0:38 Mark}, but misses with a second jab. Both exchange
left-jabs at the {0:44 Mark}.
Antonio goes 'flat-footed' at the {0:47 Mark}, and is looking to drop in the right-hand.
Shozo stays outside and jabs. Antonio counters with his own left-jab at the {0:54 Mark}.
Both are still at Center-Ring at the {1:02 Mark}.
Both fighters still look 'fresh' and sharp.
At the {1:04 Mark}, Shozo comes in with a right-hand lead, and a wide left-hook, as Antonio
ducks to low to avoid them.
The Champion is still throwing good punches with power.
Both fighters circle 360* at Center-Ring at the {1:14 Mark}. Then the Champion comes in with
a right-hand lead.
Shozo misses with a follow-up wild right-hand.
Antonio catches the Champion with a counter right-hand to the belly at the {1:18 Mark}, then
comes back with a long left-jab to the head.
Both are look for an opening at the {1:24 Mark}, while at Center-Ring.
Antonio sends out a 'sharp' left-jab at the {1:26 Mark}.
Shozo makes his move, and comes forward with a left-jab, but has his right-hand too low.
At the {1:27 Mark}, Antonio times Shozo coming in, and unloads with a 'vicious' right-cross
to his chin. The Champion goes down hard at Center-Ring.
Shozo is 'dpwn' at Center-Ring at the {1:28 Mark}. At the '2-Count' he rolls on his back over
on his back and puts hjs gloves by the side of his head. At the'7-Count' he slowly gets up
as Referee - Alfredo Garzo continues to count.
At the '8-Count' {1:36 Mark} Shozo Saijo rises, but he is 'badly dazed'. But Shoz tells the
Referee > "I'm ready to go.".
At the {1:40 Mark}, Shozo steps forward, but his legs nearly give ot as he slightly stumbles.
Antonio, who was in the front-right 'Netraull-Corner' comes charging in, and starts firing
away with a right to the body, and a 'left-right' uppercut to the 'dazed' Champion's chin.
At the {1:43 Mark}, the Champion reels sideways to the back-center Ropes, as Antonio
slams in a right-hook to the head and short left-hook to the head.
Shozo is 'badly hurt' now.
Antonio then 'blasts' the Champion with a 'big' right-hand to the chin. Shozo 'crashes' to the
canvas 'and he is down again' along the back Ropes at the {1:46 Mark}.
http://cache.diomedia.com/170h/01/AT/7T/01AT-7TT7.jpg
Shozo has his left-hand over the middle Ropes strand, and pulls himself up at the '2-Count'
{1:48 Mark}.
Shozo walks over to the back-right Corner {his own Corner}, and takes the 'Mandatory 8-Count'.
At the {1:56 Mark} he is ready to go on.
Shozo moves out to Center-Ring as Antonio comes in 'winging' a left-hook to the head. At the
{2:00 Mark}, Shozo 'stumbles' backwards to the right-back Ring area and into the Ropes.
Antonio is relentless with his attack, and fires in a fast '6-Punch' combination with >
> a right to the body ~ a 'double' left to the head ~ a right to the head ~ a right uppercut to the head ~
and a left-hook to the chin.
The Champion - Shozo Saijo 'crashes to the canvas a '3rd-time' at the {2:07 Mark}.
The bout is over, as the '3 Knockdown Rule' is in effect.

~ The Skinny ~
This was supposed to be Antono Gomez' 1st-Title Defense, and his 'home-coming' bout
as a Champion from Venezuela, only 2-Months after defeating Shozo Saijo in Japan to
capture the Title.
This bout was originally scheduled for October 29th, but the bout was pushed back 1-Week.
It was also supposed to be for the WBA Featherweight Championship, but Jose Smecca could not
make weight, so it was changed to a 'non-title' bout.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
~ The Skinny II ~
Jose Smecca is the #10 WBA-ranked Featherweight. The 16-year veteran Argentinian, is a true
Professional, who is tall at {5' 7 1/2"} and brings with him a long 70" Reach.
Jose is a smooth boxing technician, with a good left jab and who is also a smart counter-puncher.
Jose has been the Argentinian Featherweight Champion since March 9, 1968 {3 1/2 years}, who has
gone 'unbeaten' {8-0-3} over his last 11-Bouts.
As a side note {Brotherly Love} > Jose fought Antonio's older brother {Pedro Gomez} to a 10-Round
'Draw' back on September 6, 1968 in Caracas, Venezuela.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
~ The Deal ~
Jose Smecca signed for this bout on October 22nd, so he has only had a 'short time' to prepare. Jose
who started to train while weighing in at 138 lbs., could only get down to 128 3/4 lbs.
So, the bout is a 'non-title' bout. Obviously if Jose wins, he will get a Championship Bout within
60-Days, and with ample time to get ready.

~ Antonio Gomez Halts Argentinian In 7, In 'Non-Title' Bout ~
WBA Featherweight Champion - Antonio Gomez took apart veteran Argentinian
Jose Smecca and halted his opponent in Round 7 by a TKO.
Fighting in front of 12,000 Venezuelans at the Nuevo Circo, Gomez {127 1/4 lbs.}
battered the Smecca {128 3/4 lbs.} with a series of combinations, forcing the
Referee - Alex Bricenas to call a halt to bout at 2:02 of Round 7.
The bout got off to a slow start, as both fighter spent the first 3 Rounds circling, by
exhibiting an excellent defense, much like the {art of fencing}.
The Argentinian was the first to attack, and in Round 4 the taller Smecca scored with
his long left-jab, as Gomez did his 'bob-and-weave' to stay low.
But the Venezuelan opened up in the next Round {Round 5}, and put heavy-pressure
on his opponent by jabbing his way, and hitting the body with hooks while in close.
Gomez had a solid Round 6 as well, as he tagged Smecca with several right-hand leads
to send him backwards and covering up.
In Round 7, it was all Gomez, as he battered the Argentinian with left-hooks to the head
and right-crosses to the chin.
By the {1:00 Mark}, Smecca was bleeding from the mouth and was covering up along
the Ropes. At the {1:30 Mark} Gomez caught the Argentinian with a double left-hook to
the chin and a short right-cross to the jaw.
Smecca went down to one-knee, and took a '7-Count' before rising. But the Argentinian
wanted to continue.
But 20-Seconds later, the Argentinian was 'defenseless' on the Ropes, as Gomez was
sending in a barrage of punches on Smecca, when the Referee smartly called a halt to
the bout.
Antonio Gomez received a Fight Purse of { $20,000 } for his 'non-title' effort.
Jose Smecca received { $5000 } plus expenses.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
~ The Skinny ~
Antonio Gomez 'signed' for this 'non-title' bout on November 10th, with Mexican Promoter
Enrique Cessna.
Antonio signed for a Fight Purse of { $15,000 }, for what he expected was an 'easy' tune-up
against a 'little-known' Mexican Featherweight.
Antonio had last fought on Saturday - November 6th {only 2-Weeks earlier}, where he stopped
{TKO 7} Argentinian - Jose Smecca in a 'non-title' bout.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Raul Martinez Mora, who is from Mexico City, is a cagey 5' 6" boxer, with good movement. The
5 1/2 Year Professional is not a big-puncher, and relies on an 'annoying-style' of;
> Holding, Hitting and then Running.
Basically, Raul is 'a runner'. But despite that, Raul is rated as the #2 Mexican Featherweight.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
~ The Skinny II ~
The Antonio Gomez - Raul Martinez Mora bout is the 'Co-Main Event' along with >
A WBC Featherweight Eliminator between > Clemente Sanchez vs. Tarban Ben Hassen
* Oddly, the WBC is promoting and sponsoring this event, with the WBA Featherweight
Champion participating in a 'non-title' event.

~ Antonio Gomez Gets Shaken Down In Monterrey, Mexico ~
Antonio Gomez, the WBA Feathwerweght Champion engaged in a 10-Round 'non-title'
bout with Mexican Featherweight - Raul Martinez Mora.
After 10-Rounds of > 'chasing, hitting and holding' > the little-known Mexican was awarded
a Unanimous 10-Round Decision by the '3' Scoring Officials.
While the Decision was announced, a 'stunned' corner of Antonio Gomez put their hands
to the sides of their heads in disbelief.
Even the 'Sell-Out' crowd of { 13,800 } who were sitting in the Plaza de Toros were 'shocked'
at the Decision.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Antonio Gomez {130 lbs.} came in {+4 lbs.} over the featherweight limit, and appeared 'sluggish'
over the first 3-Rounds, as he pressed the ever-moving Raul Martinez Mora {128 1/4 lbs.}
The Mexican had his best early moments in Round 4, as he tagged the Venezuelan with several
chopping right-hand leads, and then 'grabbed-and-held', to prevent Gomez from following up with
a counter.
But Gomez used his vast-experience and strength to take the next 4-Rounds {5, 6, 7 and 8} by using
constant pressure and left-jabs with authority, to keep Mora on the outside-and-running.
In Round 9, Raul Martinez Mora was able to stall the Venezuelan by employing a tactic of >
* A double left-jab.
* Move in-close quickly.
* Then use his left-arm to grab Antonio's right-arm.
* Slam '2' right-hands into Antonio Gomez' left-side
* Then grab both of Gomez' arms.
* Wait for the Referee to call 'Break'
* Flee away fast, and run backwards.
Again in Round 10, the cagey 25 1/2 year-old Mexican used the same tactic as in Round 9, as
Antonio Gomez became frustrated with his opponents 'jab-and-stall' style.
At no time in the bout, was Antonio Gomez able to land his powerful right-cross on the 'cagey'
Mexican.
Scorecards
* 96-95 > {5-4-1 in Rounds} > Raul Martinez Mora

~ Antonio Gomez Still Upset With Scoring In Mexico ~
Antonio Gomez >
It was a 'bad' Decision by the Officials. He {Raul Martinez Mora} ran all night.
Each time that I moved in and threw a jab, he grabbed me {my left arm}, and
then hit me with a pitty-pat punch.
Then when the Referee called 'Break', he took off running like a Galloping Horse.
How does a Judge score a Round for a fighter like that.
All night he was throwing light left-jabs and running. Not once did he land a
good punch.
I am quite unhappy. I would say he 'stole the fight', as he spent the whole time
running and flicking out left-jabs while moving away from me.
Not once did I feel like a loser.
We watched the fight {Film} 3-Times, and we only scored 2-Rounds for Mora,
the 4th and the 10th.
I was doing all the work and made the fight. I easily won Rounds 5, 6, 7 and 8.
I will say, that the Mexican had a good defense, but he landed very few punches.
It was a 'surprise' Decision by the Mexican Officials. Everyone was shocked.
Every sports-writer at Ringside scored the bout for me. 'Ring Mundial' had it for
me by 3-Points {98-95}, that's 5-2-3 in Rounds.
And 'Gondel Publications' had it for me by a {98-96} score = 4-2-4 in Rounds.
I can agree with that.

That bout in Monterrey. An absolute embarrassment. That guy {Raul Martinez Mora}
ran all night.
The Promoter {Enrique Cessna} had promised me 'fair officials'. That was complete
'Bull Shit'.
It should have been ruled 'No Contest', as Mora did not come to fight, he came to hold
and run.
He's not a bad fighter, because he had '33' wins somewhere. {A record of 33-4-0}. He
had some skills, as he had an 'extraordinary-technique' of holding-and-hitting. But he
wouldn't exchange with Antonio, and he ran all night.
A fight is scored by who lands the effective 'punches', not by 'running'.
I wont say that the '3' Officials were corrupt, but I completely and 100% disagree with the
scoring and Decision. That kid didn't win '5' Rounds. The Judges all carded the same
Scorecard. I find that 'odd'.
The next time we fight Raul Martinez Mora, we should go to a 'Racetrack'.

Estaban left Puerto Rico for Venezuala in late-September 1971, and has been in Caracas for 2 1/2 months. During
that time, Esteban has had '3-Bouts', and has won all of them impressively, including defeating the 'talented'
Leonel Hernandez on October 6th by a well-fought 10-Round Decision.
Estaban last fought 6-Week ago {October 30th in Caracas}, and he was supposed to fight on the 'undercard' of
the Antonio Gomez - Jose Legra Championship bout.
So, Estaban is in shape at {130 1/2 lbs.}.
Esteban DeJesus >
"I was preparing for bout for this date anyway. So I'm ready. This will be a very difficult challenge, but I cannot
pass up the opportunity, both financially and for name recognition."
"If I win, I have been promised a World Championship bout for the {130 lb. ~ Super-Featherweight Title} against

Nuevo Circo ~ Caracas, Venezuela
~ Antonio Gomez Edges Puerto Rican Champ In 'Non-Title' Bout ~
~ Controversial Decision Goes Against Puerto Rican ~
WBA Featherweight Champion - Antonio Gomez edged out a controversial Decision
Decision over a 'pesky-and-frisky' Esteban Dejesus of Puerto Rico in a 10-Round
'non-title' bout in Caracas, Venezuela.
Fighting before a hometown crowd of { 8700 } at the Nuevo Circo, the hometown hero
rallied over the last 2-Rounds to win a 'close' 10-Round Decision.
The bout was not smooth sailing for Gomez {128 3/4 lbs.} over the first 4-Rounds, as
the 20 year-old DeJesus {131 lbs.} outworked the Champion with a busy attack of
left-hooks and straight right-hands.
But the patient Champion used his experience to put constant-pressure on the Puerto Rican
Lightweight Champion during the later-Rounds. Gomez used heavy left-jabs, and added
'left-and-right' hooks to the body, in an effort to slow the 'fast-and-quick' youngster down.
But the shorter Puerto Rican would not back down, and came back with a solid offense time
and again, as he landed his hard left-hook to Gomez' head several times, and rocked the
Champion's head several times throughout the bout.
But Gomez rallied back in Round 9, and 'jarred' DeJesus with a hard counter right-cross to the
jaw, as the punch went over the Puerto Rican's low left-hand and into his 'chin' at the {2:10 Mark}.
DeJesus was in some trouble late in the Round as Gomez unleashed with a 'barrage', but the
younger fighter worked his way out of danger by moving-and-backing away until the Bell.
With the bout on the line, Gomez proved to be 'stronger' during the 10th Round, as the 20 year-old
visitor faded, and was not as busy as he was during the first 7-Rounds of the bout.
Scorecards
* 97-96 = {4-3-3 in Rounds} > Antonio Gomez
* 98-97 = {3-2-5 in Rounds} > Antonio Gomez
* 97-96 = {4-3-3 in Rounds} > Antonio Gomez

~ After Bout Comments ~
Antonio Gomez >
"I knew that it was going to be a tough fight, and it was. Esteban is a very, very good fighter. He gave
me a good tussle tonight. With a little more experience he will become a great fighter, and a World Champion."
Esteban Dejesus >
"I was doing great, until he caught me with that right-hand in Round 9. I didn't know where I was for the
last 2-Rounds. But I still thought that I had won. I carried the fight for the first 7-Rounds."
"He {Antonio Gomez} is very smart, and very strong. I will chalk this up as a learning experience. It will only
make me a more complete fighter down the road."

~ Antonio Gomez and Raul Martinez Mora Sign For Rematch ~
WBA Featherweight Champion - Antonio Gomez of Venezuela will make his 1st Title Defense
against Mexico's - Rail Martinez Mora.
The bout has been set for February 12th, in Maracay, Venezuela
Gomez fought and lost a 'disputed' 10-Round Decision to Mora on November 20, 1971 in
Monterrey, Mexico.
It was a 'non-title' bout, and the fight card was sponsored by the WBC. The 'controversy'
was in that Raul Martinez Mora 'ran all night' and was awarded the 10-Round Decision.
Yet, all '8' journalists at Ringside, and '3' Mexican Newspapers all called the bout for
Antonio Gomez.
Raul Martinez Mora, who was 'unranked' before that bout, is now ranked as the #10 WBA
Featherweight, and also #10 WBC Featherweight.
The little known Featherweight from Mexico City is now Mexico's newest 'boxing sensation'
following that 'upset win'.
The Mexican {Age 25 years, 11 months} has a record of 34-4-0 with {17 KO's}, and is known as 'The Spoiler'.
The WBA Champion - Antonio Gomez {Age; 26 years, 5 months} has a record of 37-3-0 {18 KO's].

~ WBA Featherweight Championship Bout Moved Up To February 5th in Maracay, Venezuela ~
The WBA Featherweight Championship bout between Champion - Antonio Gomez and
#10 WBA-ranked Challenger - Raul Martinez Mora has been moved up 1-Week to
Saturday - February 5th, from the original date of February 12th.
Venezuelan Promoter - Ramiro Machado stated that the bout had to be moved up, as to not
coincide with the Circus Festival being held that week in Maracay.
Raul Martinez Mora >
"I had to take 10-Days off because of Military Service {Raul Martinez Mora is Platoon Leader in
the Mexican Military}.
"I was out from January 12th -thru- January 22nd. But that is fine with me, because I always
stay in shape. I would have preferred to have those 10-Days in the Gym, but this is what happens
in Boxing when you are challenging for a World Title."
"Now they moved the bout up 7-Days, and I lose 10-Days from the Gym because of my
Military commitment."
"I will resume my training today, and plan to travel to Maracay later this week."
Antonio Gomez>
"It has been moved up 7-Days. That is all-right with me, as I have been in the Gym
since January 5th."
"I'm in much better condition now, than when I fought Raul Martinez Mora 2-Months
ago {November 20th}.

WBA Championship bout to held in Maracay, Venezuela against home-country Hero
Antonio Gomez.
An expected turn out of over 10,000 is expected to cheer for Antonio Gomez, and
against the visiting Raul Martinez Mora.
Raul Martinez Mora >
"I am confident that I can defeat Antonio Gomez again. I did it once in my country,
{Monterrey, Mexico}, and I know that I can do it again."
"It is my style, that presents a problem for the Champion. I move too fast for him,
and do not allow him to set-up to throw is heavy-hands. I'm always moving and jabbing.
If he gets too close, I'll grab him, just like I did in Monterrey {November 20, 1971}."
The 26 year-old Mora does not look like much at 5' 6", but he knows how to fight and is
known as 'El Spoiler', as he has surprised many who had expected him to lose.

~ Antonio Gomez Retains Crown By KO In 7th ~
WBA Featherweight Champion - Antonio Gomez made the '1st' Title defense of his crown, and scored a
Knockout over 'pesky' Challenger - Raul Martinez Mora at {1:34} of Round 7.
Fighting in front of over { 12,000 } Venezuelans in Maracay {approximately 120 Miles away from Caracas},
the Champion bombarded his Challenger in Round 7.
The bout started off quietly, as neither fighter made an aggressive move during the first 2-Rounds, as each
feinted, and parried each others left-jabs.
But in Round 3 there was an explosion, as the Champion came out very aggressively and started bombing away,
as he sent the 'defensive stylist' Mora reeling to the Ropes.
Just past the {1:40 Mark}, the Champion caught the Mexican with a 'left-uppercut' and 'right-cross' to the chin,
dropping him to his knee's for a '4-Count'. But the gritty Challenger was up and came back swinging.
But again the Champion had too much power, and dropped Mora again at the {2:28 Mark} with a right-hook
to the chin. Still the Challenger got up at the '5-Count', and Referee - Luis Salbaran allowed the bout to continue.
In Round 4, the Champion came out looking to finish it, as the { 12,000 ] fans inside the 'Bull Ring' cheered
for their Hero to end it. But the 'cagey' Challenger got on the 'fast lane', and Mora 'circled-and-moved' while
staying outside and away from the powerful-swinging Champion while using a tight-defense.
In Round 5, the Mexican again stayed on the outside and used his 'tight-defense' to avoid the Champion's
heavy-hands. But very late in the Round, the Challenger got 'brazen' and actually traded with the Champion
at Center-Ring, and held his own throughout the last 30-Seconds of the session.
Again in Round 6, Mora decided to fight-back, rather than to jab-and-run. Again, The Challenger held his own
with the harder-hitting Venezuelan, as each traded good punches.
In Round 7, again the fighters 'stood-and-traded', as the action was 'fairly-even' over the first 1:00.
Just past the {1:00 Mark}, both fighters went 'toe-to-toe' at Center-Ring, then suddenly Raul Martinez Mora stopped
punching, and moved back to the Ropes after an 'interesting' exchange of blows.
The Champion then stepped in, and sent in some 'heavy-blows' on the Challenger, then came in with a 'tremendous'
right-hand into the 'belly' of the Challenger.
Raul Martinez Mora went down on his side, and stayed there as he was counted out at {1:34} of Round 7
by Referee - Luis Salbaran.

Antonio Gomez >
"It was a very emotional boxing match for me. People have been questioning my ability, by
stating that I was 'overrated'.
"Several of the Mexican Publications were writing that I was afraid to fight any of the
top Mexican Featherweights {ie; Clemente Sanchez, Vicente Saldivar and Enrique Garcia}."
"Well, I was given a 'bad decision' in Monterrey last year {November 20, 1971}, and I am
not sure if I will ever go back to Mexico for a bout, even a 'non-title' bout."
"That being said, Raul Martinez Mora is a great boxer. He takes a good punch, and he has
a very difficult style. He is always moving, and never presents an opening. Tonight, I was
just too sharp for him."
Raul Martinez Mora >
"Antonio is great Champion. He punched too hard for me tonight."
"I was coming back and doing well in Round 7, but he caught me with a right-hand that 'stunned me'
at Center-Ring. I had to back up to the Ropes to clear my head, but he was right on top of me."

Antonio last fought back on February 5, 1972 {4 1/2 months ago}, and Co-Manager
Willie Ketchum wants his fighter back in the Ring.
His opponent, is 'tough-nosed' Mexican Featherweight - Enrique 'Negro' Garcia.
Enrique is managed by; Lupe Sanchez. The {6 1/2 year} Professional has won '5-Straight'
and is World-ranked as the #17 WBC Featherweight.
Both Antonio Gomez and Enrique Garcia were supposed to face each 2-Years earlier, back

~ Antonio Gomez Sails By Enrique Garcia In 'Non-Title' Go In Maracay, Venezuela ~
WBA Champion - Antonio Gomez fighting in a 'non-title' bout in front of { 9200 } fans scored a
'workman-like' 10-Round Decision over a tough but limited opponent in Mexican Featherweight
Enrique Garcia.
Gomez {129 1 /4 lbs.} looked a bit heavy, and was not as quick as he normally is. Instead, the
Venezuelan used his 'strength-and-power' to man-handle his opponent throughout the bout.
The WBA Champion had Garcia a bit 'wobbly' in Rounds 6 and 9 > but was unable to floor
the 'tough-nosed' Mexican.
The Mexican was a 'game fighter' who had an excellent defense. But Enrique Garcia {128 lbs.}
displayed very little quality boxing.
Besides being a bit heavy, Antonio Gomez was somewhat 'vague' in his attack, and was not able
to deliver his vaunted right-cross with any regularity.

This bout will be Antonio's '2nd' Title Defense, since winning the WBA Championship on September 2, 1971.
Antonio has been experiencing problems with his quadrilaterals and lower-back, and has been taking it easy
in sparring-sessions.
The 'word' is, that Antonio has been sliding, and that he is no longer the quick-puncher that he once was.
The early Betting-Line had favored Antonio at {5-3}, but the odds have 'dropped', and now it is an 'Even Money'
bout.
Antonio Gomez >
"I will win by a Knockout by Round 12. He is fast, but eventually I will catch the Panamanian. My right-hand
is still the best punch in the division."
"He is very quick, but he can be hit."
"I have been experiencing pains in my legs {quadrilaterals}, and in my lower-back. I 've had to take it easy for a
few days. But I will ready the 'day of the fight'. It will get better, as it is something that I have experienced before.
I am used to it."

Ernesto Marcel wil be challenging for a World Title for a 2nd time. Back on November 11, 1971 > Ernesto travelled
to Japan to take on WBC Champion - Kuniaki Shibata.
In that bout, which was one of the 'Best' ever at Featherweight, Ernesto gave the Champion a battering thru
12-Rounds. But Shibata put forth an amazing late-rally to 'save' his Championship by a 'Draw'. But many
Sportswriters had Ernesto winning, and the Decision was 'justly disputed'.
'Ring Magazine' has listed Ernesto Marcel as the #1 Featherweight, ahead of Champion - Antonio Gomez
who has 'slipped' to #4 despite being the WBA Champion.

Antonio Gomez vs. Ernesto Marcel
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Challenger - Ernesto Marcel
Ernesto 'Nato' Marcel is a talented boxer, with the quickest-hands and feet in boxing.
The Panamanian {Age; 24 years, 4 months} is at his peak physically, and is a superior
boxer and Ring General.
A Professional for {6 years, 4 months} since April 1966, the young Panamanian is well
experienced in '38-Bouts.'
Ernesto is a 'punches-in-bunches' machine, and seems to have immense amounts of
non-stop energy.
Since fighting to a 'controversial' Draw 15 with WBC Champion - Kuniaki Shibata on
November 11, 1971 > Ernesto has scored back-to-back 'blistering' 1st-Round Knockouts
over quality opponents.
* June 10, 1972 ...... {KO 1} over Jose Luis Lopez
* February 5, 1972 .. {KO 1} over Jose Smecca
Ernesto has also been called the 'Venezuelan Smasher', as he has defeated '4' quality Venezuelan
opponents in hs career, including former WBA Super-Featherweight Champion - Alfredo Marcano
'twice' earlier in his career, back on October 31, 1970 and again on May 4, 1971.
Ernesto 'Nato' Marcel >
"I will win by a clear victory, maybe by Knockout, if it comes. I do not pick the Round, as I am
not Cassius Clay."
"I have put in 100 Rounds of sparring in 4-weeks. I am in 'perfect' physical condition."
"I know what I have to do to win. Constant pressure and movement. You cannot stand in front
of Antonio and let him get set. He has problems with boxers who move, as his footwork is not
his strong suit."

Champion ~ Antonio Gomez
* Promoter/Manager ........ Ramiro Machado
* Trainer ......................... Hely 'Ely' Montes
* Trainer/Co-Manager ...... Willie Ketchum
Fight Purse .................... { $75,000 }
To put 'steady-pressure' on Ernesto Marcel, and force him to back-up. Do not try to match
boxing-skills with the fast-handed boxer early.
Keep a steady-pace, but do not waste energy chasing the fleet-footed Panamanian. You may
have to give away a few Rounds over the first half-of-the-bout.
Start to work the body during the middle-Rounds {6 -thru- 9}, in an attempt to slow him down.
Start the big-punch attack in Round 10.
Challenger ~ Ernesto Marcel
Promoter ........ Carlos Eleta
Manager ......... Harmodio Icaza
Trainer ........... Ramon 'Curro' Dossman
Fight Purse ........ { $15,000 } > Plus an additional { $5000 } 'ancillary fee' for Central America Television rights.
To keep moving and utilize the hand-speed advantage. Stay on the attack early over the 'slow-starting'
Champion, to build up a points-lead over the first-half of the bout.
Attack with combinations, to keep the Champion on the defensive during the middle-Rounds {7, 8 and 9}.
Cruise in Rounds {9, 10 and 11}, and to catch a 'second-wind'.
Come on strong in Rounds 12, 13 and 14.
Play Round 15 'by ear' depending on the situation.

~ Ernesto Marcel Takes WBA Title From Antonio Gomez ~
Young Panamanian Challenger - Ernesto Marcel battered WBA Feathwerweight Champion - Antonio Gomez
from the 'opening bell', and throughout in a one-sided 15-Round bout.
The 24 year-old Panamanina used lightning hand-speed with quick combinations, as well as fast right-hand
leads, as he gave the 27 year-old Champion from Venezuela a bad-beating in nearly every Round.
Ernesto Marcel 'shook up' the Champion in Rounds {6, 7, 8, and 9}, and had Gomez on the Ropes while
dishing out flurries to the head and face.
By the 10th Round, Antonio Gomez was bleeding from the mouth, nose and right-eye brow, as well as
having puffy eye-lids. At no time did the Champion look like a winner, as he was unable to deliver
his vaunted right-hand, except for a few brief times during Rounds {4, 5 and 10}.
The Challenger was unable to floor the Champion, despite having him in serious trouble several times
during the 11th Round.
The fast-handed and fleet-footed Panamanian cruised over the last 4-Rounds, and won a one-sided and
convincing Decision, despite {1} Official having an absurd Scorecard, by calling the bout a 'Draw'.
Scorecards
* Judge - Carlos R. Cataya ...... 146-146 > 'Even'
* Judge - Santos Arizmendi ..... 148-141 > Ernesto Marcel
* Referee - Luis Salbaran ........ 148-144 > Ernesto Marcel
The Associated Press scored the bout > 148-139 for Ernesto Marcel.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Antonio Gomez >
"My opponent beat me. He clearly won. I just couldn't get going tonight, and I want to say that I'm sorry
to my supporters here in Caracas."
Ernesto Marcel >
"I knew that Antonio could not match me in speed. So I just kept throwing punches and I prevented
him from getting set to throw his powerful right-hand.
"If he wants a rematch, I will give him one. He was a good Champion, and he gave me an opportunity
to fight for the WBA Championship when I asked for one. I'll always respect him for that. He didn't
make excuses."

"I will take some time off, to rest. I am {Age; 27 years-old} now, and it is more
difficult to prepare for fights now. When I was younger, it was much easier."
"I will most likely not box for the rest of the year, as I have been experiencing
problems with my back and 'quadrilaterals'. I will return in 1973, and will get my
Title back."
