-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
~ The Skinny ~
Mike Quarry will travel across 'the pond' for the first time in his career, to take on former
British and Commonwealth Light-Heavyweight Champion - Chris Finnegan.
Mike is now being labeled a 'fringe contender', as he has slipped down in the ratings after
going {3-2-3} in his previous 8-Bouts.
Chris Finnegan, an experienced sharp-shouting 'southpaw' > will have height, reach and
power over his American opponent.
Chris last fought 5 1/2 Months earlier {May 22, 1973}, where he lost a 15-Round Decision
to John Conteh for the European Light-Heavyweight Championship.

~ Finnegan Easy Points Victory Over Quarry ~
~ Mike Quarry Bows To Brit In England ~
The 'slide' of Mike Quarry continues, as the American was handily beaten by British
Light-Heavyweight - Chris Finnegan over 10-Rounds at the Empire Pool in London, England.
The 'southpaw-stance' of Finnegan baffled Quarry all night, as the visiting American was
kept backing away all night.
In a 'hectic' Round 3, Finnegan 'jarred' Quarry with 'repeated' left-hand leads to the head.
Very late in the Round, Quarry attempted to come in low to tackle Finnegan, but the Brit slid
to his right, and pushed Quarry to the canvas.
This moved seemed to infuriate Quarry, who got up and went after Finnegan, as the Bell sounded
ending the Round. Quarry then hit Finnegan with '3-Punches after the Round ended.
Referee - Roland Dakin took a 'point' away from Quarry for the intentional foul.
Chris Finnegan continued to 'befuddle' Round after Round, by scoring with right-jabs and
'jarring' straight left-hands into Quarry's head.
Quarry also went down in Rounds 5 and 6, as a result of coming in low and getting both
hit-and-pushed, where they were considered 'flash-knockdowns'.
During both visits to the canvas, Quarry never looked like he was staying down for the
'full-count'.
Finnegan continued to give a 'fine display' of Boxing, as he kept Quarry backing up for
nearly all 30-Minutes, and looking to cover up.
Quarry's only success was during the second-half of Round 10, as he went after Finnegan
with several flurries, and opened a small-cut over Finnegan's right eye-brow when he caught
the Brit with a good left-hook.
Other than that, Finnegan was clearly dominant.
Sole Scoring Scorecard
Referee - Roland Dakin ...... 100-97 > {Chris Finnegan}

Mike Quarry >
"Maybe I better think about another profession. That southpaw-stance gave me problems
all night long. Chris is a sharp-puncher."
"The money was good, that's why I took the fight. It was too good to turn down. The Promoter
{Harry Levene} said that he still wants me back here, and that he has a couple of other fights
lined up for me."

Mike Quarry
Part 1
~ Discussing his Boxing Career when he was 'managed by' Gil Clancy ~
Gil Clancy took over my career on my 22nd Birthday {March 5, 1973}. At the time my
record was 36-1-1 {11 KO's}, and I was ranked as the #4 WBA Light-Heavyweight.
Gil said to me >
"Your father wants me to get you 'back' to a World Championhip caliber fighter.
I will have you back fighting for the Championship by the end of the year {1973}."
He sounded good, and I listed to everything he said, and never questioned a thing or
decision he made.
I had just gotten married {February 20, 1973}, and had a 10-Day Honeymoon in
Lake Tahoe, Nevada. When I got back to Anaheim California on March 3rd, my father
{Jack} said to me >
"OK Mike. The honeymoon is over. It's time to get back to Boxing. I'm hooking
you up with Gil Clancy."
My father {signed} a Managerial Contract with Gil Clancy. With Gil to take over starting
on April 10, 1973. It was a '6-Month' contract, with another '6-Month' renewal-option.
The deal was, I got 66.66% and Gil got {33.33%}, with Gil providing the Training and
'general expenses'. It sounded OK to me.
But first, I had a 'contract' with Pete Ashlock in Orlando, Florida - for a bout scheduled
for Wednesday- April 4th at the 'Sports Arena'.
On March 30th, I took a flight from Anaheim-to-Orlando. I was able to get in a couple of
days of light-sparring before my bout. Then on April 4th, I took on Tampa 'club-fighter'
Light-Heavyweight - Walter 'The Snake' White.
It was a relatively easy bout, and I won a 10-Round Decision going away. My Fight Purse
was only { $3012 }, but I got to keep all of it.
I stayed in Orlando for 5-Days to relax. Then on April 9th, I took a 'train' up to New York City
to start my 'managerial deal' with Gil Clancy.

Mike Quarry
Part 2
~ Discussing his Boxing Career when he was 'managed by' Gil Clancy ~
When I got New York City on April 10th, I had 13-days to get ready for my bout in the Felt Forum
on Monday Night - April 23rd.
Gil had set me up in a decent Hotel, but the 'air-circulation system' was defective, and within a few days
I had a 'chest infection'. Still, I went to Felt Forum in Madison Square Garden to work out with a
few of the sparring-partners that Gil had set up for me. I was hoping that by working out, my chest
would clear up. It didn't, as it got worse.
After a few-days, my chest was 'congested', and I wanted to pull-out of my bout with veteran
Hal 'TNT' Carroll. Hal was a tough guy, and a smart veteran who made you work. He was no walk in
the park. I didn't feel 100%, and I told Gil that maybe 'we should cancel' because of my chest condition.
Gil said to me 'sternly' >
"Bull shit Mike. You're taking this bout because you need to toughen up. Look, it's either 'Shit'
or get off the pot. I got you a purse guarantee of $6500. Are you nuts or something. You can take
this guy. He's tough, but he's slow and telegraph's his punches."
I immediately 'caved in' and said >
"All-right, you're the 'boss' Gil. I'll dig down and fight hard for you."
I went though with the bout. And just like I knew it, I stated to wheeze by the end of the 3rd-Round,
and my lungs were burning. I felt strong, but I had 'no zap' on my punches over the second-half of
the bout.
Hal, who was 'cagey-smart', took advantage of my lack of aggression, and rallied over the last-Rounds
to hold me to a Draw.
Yes, I got a fight purse of $6560. But I had to 'kick' Gil.......{ $2180 bucks. }... I walked away with { $4380 }.

Man! Tough business! I was thinking of myself at 22, I would have probably been just as gullible and easy to lead as Mike. Maybe not, but you never know.
Interesting and informative as always. Thanks, again.

Been Koed,
Take a look at Mike Quarry's {half-year} 1973 schedule that Gil Clancy set up for him.
* April 23, 1973 ............. Hal Carroll ............ Felt Forum, New York City
> Mike battles to a 10-Round Draw with a 'tough' and seasoned veteran.
> Mike fought with a 'chest infection'.
> Mike 'gassed out' down the stretch.
> Result > 'Draw 10'
> Fight Purse ....... $6560
* May 10, 1973 ............. Tom Bogs ............. Copenhagen, Denmark
> Only 17-Days after the tough bout with Hal Carroll, Gil books Mike in a bout against World-Class - Tom Bogs, in Denmark.
> Mike gets his left-eye 'sliced' in Round 5.
> Result > 'L Dec 10'
> Fight Purse ..... $18,000
* July 21, 1973 .............. Andy Kendall ........ Felt Forum, New York City
> Mike fights 'tough' Cleveland-slammer Andy Kendall in a 12-Round bout for the American Light-Heavyweight Championship.
> It was televised by ABC-TV 'Wide World of Sports'
> Again, Mike gets his left-eye sliced in Round 4.
> Mike requires '8-Stitches' on the left eye-brow.
> Result > 'Draw 12'
> Fight Purse .... $20,000
* October 3, 1973 .......... Billy Wagner ......... Orlando, Florida
> Mike is back in Florida, to take on 'faded' but tough veteran Billy Wagner.
> Mike gets 'lumped up' and has his left-eye sliced in Round 2.
> Mike in an 'upset' Decision Loss.
> Result > 'L Majority Dec 10'
> Fight Purse ..... $4610
* November 13, 1973 .... Chris Finnegan ...... London, United Kingdom
> Only 6-Weeks after the 'gruelling' bout with Billy Wagner, Gil books Mike for a bout in London, England.
> Mike is literally embarrassed out of the Ring by Chris Finnegan, and loses a 'one-sided' Decision.
> Result > 'L Dec 10'
> Fight Purse .... $12,000
* November 23, 1973
> Just 10-days after fighting Chris Finnegan in the United Kingdom
> Gil Clancy throws Mike in the Ring as a sparring-partner for older brother Jerry Quarry.
> Jerry is in New York City, preparing for his Friday Night ~ December 14, 1973 bout with Earnie Shavers.
> Gil Clancy was having a hard time getting decent 'sparring-partners' for Jerry, so he uses the younger Quarry as a sparring-mate.
> In the process, Mike gets his 'ribs' bruised up by Jerry's hooks to the body.
> Gil Clancy then tries to put Mike on the undercard of the Jerry Quarry - Earnie Shavers bout.
> Gil wants to match up Mike, with old nemesis - Andy Kendall, for a '3rd-Bout' between the two Light-Heavyweights.
> Mike Quarry has finally had enough, and tells Gil Clancy >
"What are trying to do me Gil. Get me 'killed' before my 23rd Birthday."
> Mike Quarry and Gil Clancy having a falling out, and their contract is terminated on November 30, 1972.
-
Re: Mike Quarry ~ Forced To Fight On By Father ~ 'Road To Palookaville'
Mike Quarry
After 'dumping' Manager - Gil Clancy on November 30th, Mike contacted his old friend
Pete Ashlock in Orlando, Florida.
Mike then 'signed' a deal with him, for Pete to get Mike some 'safe bouts' so that he
could get his name back after the 'disaster' 7-Month deal with Gil Clancy.
First thing Pete Ashlock did, was to tell Mike to unload the 'Irish Mike' moniker.
Pete Ashlock >
"I cant stand that nickname Mike. "Irish Mike" is finished. From now on you're going
by the name of .... 'Rock-n-Roll' Mike Quarry."
Mike Quarry >
"Oh no Pete. Oh Jesus Christ, when my Father {Jack} finds out about this, he's going to kill me."
Pete Ashlock >
"Don't worry about it kid. You're a 'Rock-n-Roll' guy now. Fast and loose. Stick with me, and
I'll make you a lot of money."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Immediately, Pete Ashlock got Mike a 'somewhat' safe bout right away, and for Tuesday -
December 18, 1973 > and in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
First, Mike wanted to stay in New York City to watch his brother Jerry take on the dangerous
punching Earnie Shavers on Friday Night - December 14th at Madison Square Garden.
Pete Ashlock made arrangements for Mike to get a flight out of New York City to Milwaukee
on Sunday ~ December 16th, so he could be in Milwaukee 2-Days before his bout.
Mike also wanted to stay in New York, to do light gym-work and to be ready for the bout
in 2-Weeks.
The deal between Mike and Pete Ashlock was simple. Mike got to keep {70%} and Pete
got {30%} on all bouts outside of Florida. Pete was the Manager, and he booked all the
deals and made the financial arrangements.
In bouts at Pete Ashlock's - Sports Arena in Orlando, Florida > there would be a different
arrangement, depending on the opponent.

~ Mike Quarry Tops Karl Zurheide In Close Bout ~
Mike Quarry had to finish strong over the last 3-Rounds to earn a 'close' 10-Round Decision win
over veteran Karl Zurheide last night.
The 22 1/2 year-old Quarry got off to a slow start in the bout, as Karl Zurheide was effective as
he 'counter-punched' Quarry throughout the first 5-Rounds, as well as displaying a good defense.
But as Zurheide moved in close during the middle-Rounds, Quarry was able to take advantage of his
speed as he scored with quick-combinations into Zurheide's face, forcing the Wisconsin-based local
to cover up or hold.
Over the last 3-Rounds, Zurheide attempted to move inside and maul Quarry. But the quick boxer
was able to score with fast left-jabs and left hooks into Zurheide's head.

Mike Quarry >
"I wanted to pace myself early. I knew that I could handle Karl. He's a good defensive fighter,
but he sure hung on a lot. He should have punched more, if he wanted to win. You can't win on
defense alone."
"I was in control of the bout, as I landed the cleaner punches down the stretch when the bout
was on the line. I'll give him another shot. I'll come back here next year {1974}."
Karl Zurheide >
"I honestly thought that I won. I want another shot at him, Hell yes."
"He threw a lot of punches, but he missed with most of them. A lot of 'flash' and no power. The
punches that I landed were 'jolting' blows."
Matt Baulie {Manager for Karl Zurheide} >
"It was close. Quarry threw a lot of punches, but he had nothing on them. Karl had the edge during
the first-half, and Quarry had the edge in the second-half. It was a {1-Point} difference. Somebody
had to win I guess."

Mike Quarry
1974 ended on a good note, as I won my last fight {December 18th} over Karl Zurheide.
My record was 39-4-3 {12 KO's}, but I had fallen out of the Top 10, down to #16.
I was out to prove the 'Boxing Critics' wrong, and was set to be the best I could
in getting back to the Top.
My Manager {Pete Ashlock} said that we should pick up a few 'safe opponents' to
get on a winning-streak going, so we could get back into the Top 10.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
~ Mike Quarry Keeps Title Hope Alive ~
Mike Quarry was forced to work hard, to edge out tough-veteran Bobby Rascon over 10-Rounds
in winning a Unanimous Decision.
Rascon 'stalked' the clever-boxing Quarry over the early going, and forced the visitor to move
quickly and to stay on the perimeter over the first 4-Rounds.
Rascon, fighting from a 'crouch', came in low and pressed, making Quarry work. The New Mexico
veteran kept Quarry 'off-balance' during the first 4-Rounds by 'lashing' out with left-hooks to the head
and body.
Quarry was able to switch-gears in Round 5, and scored with several good left-hooks into Rascon's
head. Quarry picked up his pace and kept the momentum going in Round 6, as he was now landing
with hard left-jabs to the face, causing Rascon's nose to 'trickle-blood'.
Coming out for Round 7 {Quarry's Trainer- Frank Brazell} told his fighter to move inside.
In Round 7, Mike followed his Trainer's instruction, and moved inside, where he avoided Rascon's
wide hooks and countered with 'fast-combinations' to the body and head.
.
In Round 8, Quarry continued with his inside attack and did well. But half-way through the Round,
Rascon caught Quarry with a good 'left-hook' to the chin, and Quarry 'wobbled' to the Ropes.
But Quarry was able to hold on, and ride out the storm.
In Round 9, Quarry came back with a series of left-uppercuts and long-range hooks to stall Rascon's
attack.
In Round 10, Quarry had his 'best' Round, as he slammed Rascon with 'jolting-hooks', sending the
local veteran's mouthpiece skidding across the canvas.

Mike, who is now ranked as the #12 WBA Light-Heavyweight following '3-Straight' wins needs
this victory to get back into the Top 10.
According to 'Press Reports', this bout was billed as a 'WBA Elimination Bout', with the winner
to get a 'chance' at World Champion - Bob Foster in May 1974.
The South African - Pierre Fourie was a 'fast-handed' boxer, who employed an excellent
left-jab with 'quick' ring movement.

~ Quarry Beaten Loses In South Africa ~
~ Pierre Fourie Wins, Decisions Quarry In Spirited Bout ~
In a well-contested Light-Heavyweight bout, Pierre Fourie out-punched American - Mike Quarry
over 10 'spirited' Rounds.
The South African, fighting before 25,000 supporters, had the edge thru the first 3-Rounds, as he
scored with quick-combinations each time that Quarry moved in within range.
Fourie was the aggressor and scored with quick 'left-right' {one-two} punches into the American's
face, reddening it by the end of Round 3.
But Quarry made a 'good charge' during the middle-Rounds, as he landed with fast left-jabs and
left-hooks from outside, especially in Round 5 when he 'jarred' the South African with a 'hard'
left-hook to the jaw.
In heated exchanges during Rounds 7 and 8, it was Fourie who delivered the 'cleaner' punches,
as he tagged the American in the face with several 'sharp' right-hands, sending Quarry's hair flying.
In Round 9, Quarry moved inside and attempted to 'slug-it-out', but the South African smartly kept
a 'tight-defense', and was not caught with anything damaging.
In the 'Final Round', both fighters fought with caution for the first 2-Minutes. Then Fourie pressed
with a fast-attack, and caught Quarry by surprise, sending him back on his heels with a volley
of punches. Quarry took the punches and recovered, and then came back with his own 'flurry'
just before the Bell sounded ending the bout.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mke Quarry is now 'residing' in Orlando, Florida.
Fight Promoter/Manager ~ Pete Ashlock puts together an interesting bout for the NABF Championship.
Pete has brought in Canadian Light-Heavyweight Champion ~ Gary Summerhayes.
Summerhayes is a 'talented' boxer-puncher from Canada. Gary is durable and is an aggressive fighter
who likes to trade, as he take a good punch.
Gary had been riding a '13-Bout' unbeaten streak, until he was 'upset' in his previous bout, and lost
a 'controversial' 10-Round Split-Decision to Karl Zurheide in Milwaukee on January 21, 1974.

~ Quarry Grabs Unpopular Nod ~
~ Quarry Wins, Keeps NABF Title ~
~ Quarry Wins, Fans Boo Decision ~
Mike Quarry was given a rough going-over by Canadian - Gary Summerhayes. But the former
World Title Challenger used his experience and 'crisp-combinations to escape with a 12-Round
Majority Decision.
Quarry started off strong, as he used his speed and footwork to out-hit the strong but 'slow-starting'
Summerhayes.
But starting in Round 4, the Canadian showed his strength, as he slammed Quarry with solid left-hands
to the face.
Quarry bounced back to take Round 5 by tossing in continuous left-jabs and short left-hooks, as he
kept the Canadian on the defensive.
In Round 6, both fighters 'neutralized' each other, as each connected with left-jabs and by landing
with quick counter right-hands.
But the Canadian showed his durability, and made his mark during Rounds {7, 8 and 9} as jolted Quarry
with left-hands to the head, and 'cut' Quarry around both his eyes, as well as bruising up his forehead.
But Quarry showed his experience, and rallied during Rounds {10 and 11} by scoring with 'crisp-combinations'
to his opponents head, and then moved outside to the perimeter and circled away.
In the 'Final Round' > Summerhayes attacked with ferocity, and went after Quarry with everything he had,
driving Quarry around the Ring. As Summerhayes chased, the Sports Arena fans {2837} erupted while cheering
for the Canadian visitor.
The Canadian scored with 'lefts-and-rights' to the head, as Quarry was on the complete defensive for the first
2-Minutes. But Quarry showed his experience, and came back with his own series of punches, and tagged
the aggressive Summerhayes with several 'solid' left-hooks over the last 25-Seconds of the 12-Round bout.
At the 'Bell' > Gary Summerhayes' corner rushed into the Ring and lifted their fighter up in the air, while walking
him around the Ring, as the Sports Arena fans cheered for what they thought was the 'new' NABF Light-Heavyweight
Champion.
Mike Quarry, with 'cuts' over both eyes and a bruised forehead > slowly walked back to his corner, but raised both
hands in the air claiming victory.
Scorecards
* Judge - Jack DeFranco ...... 117-115 = {5-3-4 in Rounds} > Mike Quarry
* Judge - Bob Burns ............ 117-117 = {3-3-6 in Rounds} > 'Even'
* Judge - Mick Garry ........... 117-114 = {6-3-6 in Rounds} > Mike Quarry
After the Decision was announced >
The fans went wild, and tossed 'seat cushions' and 'popcorn boxes' into the Ring. Other items were sent into the
Ring as well, as the Ring Announcer, Boxing Officials and both Boxers {and handlers} ducked for cover.
After 5-Minutes, the Ring was littered with debris.
~ After Bout Comments ~
Mike Quarry >
"I can understand that the fans are upset. Gary fought hard, and had a great '12th Round'. But you can't award
a fight on 'one round' only."
"It was a good fight, but I landed a lot more punches. He landed some hard ones, but I was the one that landed
with more volume."
Gary Summerhayes >
"I don't question the Judges decision. They call what they see, and I fight in the Ring. But I'm not so sure that
Mike won this fight."
"Look at me, I'm 'unmarked'. Look at Mike. He's got 'facial-cuts', a bruised face, and a 'knot' on his forehead.
Who looks like the winner to you."

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
~ Quarry Wins Over Karl Zurheide ~
'Rock-n-Roll' Mike Quarry breezed to a 10-Round Decision over veteran Karl Zurheide. The young Quarry
took control from the Opening Bell, and 'carried' the fight all the way.
Quarry used 'sharp' left-jabs, and swift-combinations, while moving around the perimeter of the Ring.
Karl Zurheide tried to get inside, but he was seldom able to reach Quarry with any of his heavy-hooks,
and was beaten to the punch in nearly every exchange.
Though he won by a wide-margin, Mike Quarry had his left eye-brow 'sliced open' in Round 9, when he
got caught by a right-hook from Karl Zurheide. It was the 'only' Round that the veteran won on the

What About Mike ?
* Mike Quarry ~ 'This Is Rough Work, When You Get It' *
For Mike Quarry, the 'Boxing Road' has been grueling for the past 18-Months.
Since December 1972, Mike Quarry {the younger brother of Jerry Quarry} has been
involved in '15-Bouts', while posting a record of 8-4-3.
The 23 year-old Quarry has seen himself go from the #2 World-Ranked Light-Heavyweight
in June 1972, down to the #15 position in the World Rankings.
Along the way, Mike has gone through '3' Managers, and numerous cuts to his left eye-brow.
And Mike went from 'Irish Mike', to 'Rock-N-Roll' Mike. Mike said the new nickname was the
idea of his Manager - Pete Ashlock, who likens it to a fast-mover.
Now it's time for a rest, as Mike plans to take '4-to-5 Months' off, and will return in November.
Mike Quarry >
"It's been a grueling 18-Months. I'm only 23, but I feel older. I need to take a break, because
I will need surgery on my left-eye brow, to repair some scar-tissue. I got the eye-brow 'sliced up',
and the only way to prevent it from opening up again is surgery."
"I shouldn't complain though, as I did very well financially during these 18-Months. I got to fight
in > Denmark - London, England - South Africa - New York City. In those bouts, I made some
real good money."
"When I come back, I will move to Houston, Texas - because my Manager- Pete Ashlock will
set up a few tune-up bouts for me there. After that, I will be seeking to get back into the Top 10,
and will try to get a bout with one of the ranked fighters."

~ Frankie Evans' Title Goes On The Line Tuesday Night ~
~ Texas Light-Heavyweight Championship ~
Texas Champion - Frankie Evans and Challenger - Mike Quarry will battle in a 12-Rounder
at the Coliseum in Houston on Tuesday - November 19th.
26 year-old Frankie Evans will put his Texas State Title on the line Tuesday. Evans who caused a
'stir' 2 years ago {December 1972} when held Mike Quarry to a 10-Round Draw in Miami Beach, Florida.
The result was 'controversial', as both fighters claimed they had won. Mike Quarry took the result much
harder, and was 'crying' uncontrollably in his locker room after the bout, threatening to quit the sport.
Frankie Evans >
"Mike knows that I won that fight, that is why he was behaving the way he was. He was embarrassed
that he got man-handled by an 'unknown' like me. I was supposed to be a set-up opponent, and was
supposed to lose. But I tricked them up, and fought like Hell."
"Now I want him bad for this rematch. I'm ready to defend my Title. I'm going to whip Quarry , and
then go back after Lonnie Bennett who has beaten me twice."

There deal was somewhat fragmented, as the Fight Contract was always modified. In some bouts, Mike would
get $4000, and others he would receive a % of the Gate. Sometimes as high as {35%}, and other times as
low as {22%}.
One good thing for Mike, was that Pete covered all of Mike's expenses {Hotel and Travel} as well as providing
Mike with 'living arrangements' when he moved from California to Orlando and then Houston.
Mike had to pay his Trainer {Frank Brazell} out of his own pocket, which was usually {10%} of his Fight Purse,
unless it was an important bout, where Frank Brazell received {15%}.

Mike Quarry came out quickly in '1st-Round' and immediately went to work, as he went on to pound

Mike opened up by using 'looping punches' {Ray 'Windmill' White style} in easily taking the first

~ Quarry Wins, Felt Forum Fans Unhappy ~
Young teenage Puerto Rican 'sensation' Pedro Soto took it to Mike Quarry during the first 2-Rounds,
as he pummeled his more experienced opponents body, and drove him from 'pillar-to-pillar'.
Though both fighters were listed as the exact same weight {Announced Weight; 180 lbs.} Pedro Soto
looked bigger and much stronger than Mike Quarry.
The young Puerto Rican also opened a 'small-cut' over Quarry's left-eye at the end of Round 2, which
sent the 4000+ crowd of 'pro' Pedro Soto fans into a 'frenzy'.
Soto continued with his attack in Round 3, but Quarry started to counter-back well by landing left-hooks
underneath and into the mid-section during the last minute of the Round.
Both fighters went toe-to-toe during a 'fast-paced' Round 4, and the crowd went 'wild' as Soto slammed
in a 'big' right-hook to the head that sent Quarry reeling into the Ropes.
The 'fast-handed' Puerto Rican moved in quickly, and hammered Quarry with lefts-and-right, and opened
up the cut over Quarry's left-eye.
But starting in Round 5, Quarry showed his experience, as he let his young and inexperienced opponent
punch himself out. At the {2:00 Mark}, Quarry moved in close on the arm-weary Soto, and slammed
away on the inside with left-hooks and right-uppercuts.
Quarry continued with his good work on the inside in a 'fast-paced' Round 6, as he had the teenager
Soto looking to hold on by the end of the Round.
In Round 7, both fighters landed with good left-hands during the first-half of the Round, but again
Quarry showed his experienced and 'stalled' Soto's attack, by firing in a steady-flow of left-jabs over
the last 'minute-and-a-half' of the Round.
With the bout on-the-line coming out for the Final Round {Round 8} > both fighters met at Center-Ring
and traded blows. But Mike Quarry was better at 'in-fighting', as he out-landed Pedro Soto {2-to-1} down
the stretch.

Mike Quarry >
"I can understand the fans being upset, especially the Puerto Rican fans. He's their Hero, and was
the Spanish Amateur Champion. He had a big following here tonight, and they wanted him to win."
"Pedro was very strong, and I was worried during Round 4 when really opened up the cut over my
left-eye. I had to turn it around in Round 5, and when I started hitting him in the mid-section,
his attitude changed."

No sooner had the Felt Forum - 'Ring Announcer' - Johhn Condon maded the announcement that the
Officials had awarded an 8-Round Unanimous Decision to Mike Quarry over local hero Pedro Soto,
unruly fans voiced their displeasure.
Within minutes, bottles were thrown into the Ring, along with other 'sharp objects'. Then approximately
'100' fans got into brawls, and the 'fists started flying'.
The 'mini-riot' then spread out through the stands, and windows at the Felt Forum were broken, as
the 'mob' threw chairs at the windows in the 'promenade area'.
The action did not stop there, as the 'wild rampage' grew and spread out into the street on 8th Avenue as

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
~ Double Skinny ~
Mike Quarry is still the #9 World-ranked Light-Heavyweight. This will be Mike's '3rd-Bout' in
6-Weeks, since returning on November 26th.
Jose 'King' Roman, who is managed by Al Braverman, is a former Heavyweight World Title
Challenger > {L KO1} to George Foreman on September 11, 1973.
But since that horrific beating, 'King' Roman has gone 3-1-1 in has last 5-Bouts, which includes;
a {Draw 8} with dangerous Spaniard - Jose Luis 'Ibar' Urtain, and an 'upset' {TKO 2} over former
WBA Light-Heavyweight Champion - Vicente Rondon on June 6, 1974.
This is an interesting match-up, as both fighters have quick-hands, and are equal in stature.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
~ Quarry Edges 'King' Roman In Fast-Paced Bout ~
Mike Quarry used his quick-footwork and fast-combinations to edge out 'Jose 'King' Roman in a
fast-paced 10-Round 'Junior Heavyweight Bout'.
The bout was fought over 'even terms' during the first 4-Rounds, as both fighters played a
'cat-and-mouse' game.
But Quarry's hand-speed came into play during the middle-Rounds {5, 6 and 7}, as he continually beat
the Puerto Rican Heavyweight to the punch with 'left-right' combinations to both the head and body.
In the best Rounds of the night {8 and 9}, 'King' Roman pressed hard, and battered Quarry with
'left-right' one-two's to the head, driving his opponent back into the Ropes, while Quarry countered
with left-hooks while inside.
In the 'Final Round', Quarry was fast-and-quick, as he landed with repeated left-jabs and right-hand
leads in a fine display of boxing skills, as 'King' Roman's previous charge stalled.

Mike Quarry spent 1/3 of the bout 'dancing', 1/3 of the bout 'fighting', and the other 1/3 of the bout 'clowning'.
In the end, Mike Quarry won a 'lackluster' 10-Round Decision over a 'thin-legged' and flabby 33 year-old Bobby Rascon.
Quarry cane out quickly and boxed well over the first 3-Rounds, as he was effective with left-jabs and right-hand leads
into his slow-plodding opponent from Arizona.
But during Rounds 4 and 5 , Quarry started 'dancing-and-clowning' to the crowd of { 3533 }, who started to boo
Quarry's antics.
A now motivated Rascon came out aggressively in Round 6, and had his best moments in the bout when he nailed
Quarry with '2' hard right-hands to the ribs, that drove Quarry into the Ropes. Rascon then moved in and 'raked'
his opponent over with a series of left-hooks and right-hands to the body. But that was the only effective session
for the veteran.
Quarry came back strong in Round 7 > by jabbing-and-moving, and scored with left-jabs to the face, and several
right-uppercuts from long-range that 'jarred' Rascon.
In Round 8, Quarry was back to 'clowning' and was even 'yelling' at the crowd {ie; Cassius Clay style}.
At the end of Round 8 > Referee - Humberto Barrera went into Mike Quarry's corner and warned the fighter of
his antics, and threated to 'take-a-point' away from the 'brash-and-cocky' boxer if he behaved like that again.
In Round 9, Quarry got down to business, and was again effective with left-jabs and quick right-hand leads,
but the punches lacked power. But still, Rascon was now just a punching-bag, and was doing little other than
blocking punches or holding.
The 'Final Round' was dull, as Quarry pecked away with left-jabs and stayed on the perimeter for the first-half
of the Round as Rascon did little but take the glancing-blows.
At the {1:30 Mark} and with the bout well-in-hand, Quarry went back to his 'clowning', by dropping his guard and
taunting his opponent. Mike again started yelling at the crowd, and literally backed around the Ring at 'full-speed'
while waving to his opponent and the crowd with both hands in the air.

Melvin Mott {Dallas, Texas} is a good 'club-fighting' Light-Heavyweight. Melvin has won
'12-Straight' bouts, and 17-of-18.
But, Melvin has been 'idle' for the past 9-Months due to a broken 'right-hand', which is his

~ Mike Quarry Masters Mott ~
Mike Quarry cruised to a 'convincing' 12-Round Decision over Melvin Mott to capture the Texas
Light-Heavyweight Championship.
Quarry using fast-combinations and left-hooks, built up a large points lead thru 9-Rounds, and then
eased down the stretch to win a Unanimous Decision.
Melvin Mott who came into the Ring with a reputation as a big right-hand swinger, was 'hampered'
by an injured right-hand, and only threw his right-hand sporadically throughout the early Rounds.
Quarry sensing that Mott was favoring his right-hand, moved in close starting in Round 3, and
dominated the bout with excellent infighting.
Quarry had a solid Rounds in the {3rd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 8th and 9th}, as he tore into Mott who was limited to
throwing left-jabs and pawing rights.
Mott made an attempt to get back into the bout late, but he could never put solid 'back-to-back' punches
together.

without any force, I moved in close and worked his body over pretty good."
Melvin Mott >

As of May 1975
'Rock-N-Roll' Mike Quarry {Age; 24} had posted a record of > 47-5-3 with {12 KO's}.
Mike was now in the midst of a '7-Bout' winning streak, and with a run of winning 10-of-11.
Mike who had fallen as low as #16 in the World Rankings in late-1973, had re-entered
the World Ratings at #8.
Mike, who was already a seasoned veteran at a young age, as he had been fighting as
a Professional since April 1969 {6-Years}.
In total Mike had been involved in '55-Bouts', and had put in an incredible amount of
'Ring Rounds' {443} in a short period of time.
Not including sparring, the heavy work-load of his 'Road-Tour' was wearing him down.
Not physically big as a Light-Heavyweight {5' 11" @ 175 lbs.}, Mike was almost always the
smaller fighter when in the Ring against his opponent.
And since Mike was far from a hard-puncher, it was common-knowledge that the bout was
likely going the distance, where Mike would take punches.
Mike, who was now Managed by Pete Ashlock {since December 1973}, was mostly campaigning
in the South {in the small-circuit}, where he had been re-building his career for past 18-Months.

~ 'Yaqui' Lopez Defeats Mike Quarry ~ Scores 17th Straight Win ~
~ 'Indian' Lopez Beats Mike Quarry ~
Lanky and tall - Alvaro 'Yaqui' Lopez used a slow-and-steady attack by slamming 'light-hitting'
Mike Quarry with left-hooks and straight right hands to score a 10-Round Unanimous Decision.
The action was 'heated' during the first 4-Rounds, as both fighters landed with crisp punches.
But by Round 5, 'Yaqui' started to take command, as he was hitting harder and moving Quarry
with his right-hand punches.
In Round 6 > 'Yaqui' Lopez, fighting before a 'packed house' of supporters, turned over a 'slashing'
right-hand and follow-up left-hook to the jaw which 'dropped' Quarry to his knee's for a '4-Count'.
The 'knockdown' had the 3000+ spectators in the Civic Auditorium 'jumping'.
But the 'clever-boxing' Quarry would not quit, and rallied back in Rounds 7 and 8 by moving
inside and 'surprisingly' out-working the stronger Lopez with punches to the mid-section.
In a 'torrid' Round 9, both Lopez and Quarry met at Center-Ring and attacked each other with
body punches.
But several of Quarry's went 'low', and Referee - Henry Elesperu penalized the visitor and deducted
{1-Point} from Quarry.
In the 'Final Round', a desperate Quarry did score with repeated left-jabs and had a 'plodding'
Lopez missing badly throughout.

~ The Skinny ~
Just 20-days after having an extremely tough battle with 'Yaqui' Lopez in California, Mike is back on
the East Coast in his home-base of Orlando.
His opponent is Miami Beach Light-Heavyweight - Vernon 'The Sledgehammer' McIntosh.
Vernon is a very popular club-fighter from Southern Florida, and one who has a big following, due to
his exciting 'bombs-away' style.
Vernon is strictly a 'One-Punch Knockout Artist' who has no fear of throwing 'right-hand' haymakers
as he moves forward with little defense.
Approximately 350 of Vernon's supporters from Miami Beach have ventured North, to support Vernon
in this Florida bout.
Before this bout Vernon McIntosh has been both bold and 'chirping', stating that he is going to end
Mike Quarry's career, by flattening him within 5-Rounds.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
~ Quarry Edges 'Sledgehammer' McIntosh In Orlando ~
~ Quarry Almost Gets Nailed, Barely Holds Off 'Sledgehammer' McIntosh ~
#10 World-Rated Light-Heavyweight- Mike Quarry was 'wobbled' several times early in the bout,
and withstood a bad moment in Round 8, but rallied late to just barely edge out 'wild-swinging'
Vernon McIntosh in a rough 10-Round bout.
Mike Quarry the World-Class boxer had his hands full over the first 3-Rounds, as 'Knockout Artist'
Vernon McIntosh came out bombing, as he 'tagged' Quarry with right-hands repeatedly in the
early going, and had Quarry in bad-shape and 'wobbling', in each of the first 3-Rounds.
But Quarry was able to ride out the early 'Sledgehammers', and started to come back in Rounds
4 and 5, as he landed with a variety of combinations on McIntosh who barely had a defense.
Quarry had his best moments in Rounds 6 and 7, when he landed hard left-hooks into McIntosh's
mid-section, and had the Miami Beach slugger bending to avoid further punishment.
But in Round 8, Quarry almost 'crumbled'. After controlling the first {1:25} of the Round, Quarry
dropped his guard, and was caught by a vicious 'over-hand' right from the wild-swinging McIntosh.
Mike was 'staggered' and badly hurt as he skidded backwards into the Ropes. McIntosh then came
in with 'wild' right-hand haymakers, while trying to land the 'finisher'. But somehow, Quarry was able
to withstand the incoming barrage, and just barely made it out of the Round.
Coming out for Round 9, McIntosh was arm-weary {from the previous Round's offense output}, and the
Miami Beach 'star' was exhausted by the mid-way point in the session.
At this point in the Round, Mike Quarry was able to clear the 'cob-webs' to out his head, and put
together a strong-charge over the second-half of the session to take the Round.
With the bout-on-the-line {Round 10} > McIntosh came out with a brief attack of 'hard' right-hands aimed
at Quarry's head, but by the {0:40 Mark}, Vernon was completely 'gassed-out'.
Quarry re-grouped, and then came on like 'gangbusters' over the last {1:10} of the Round, as he 'drilled'
McIntosh with left-hooks and straight right-hands to the head, and having Vernon nearly out-on-his-feet
at the Bell.

This was a complete turn-around from their previous bout 5-Weeks earlier, where McIntosh

scored a 10-Round Majority Decision over #9 World-Rated - Mike Quarry.
In what was supposed to be a Boxing Match between two young Light-Heavyweights,
turned into a 'Pier-Six Brawl', with frequent low-blows and flying elbows.
Young 20-year-old Pedro Soto came out quickly, and used his strength to maul and
swarm Mike Quarry with 'rough-house' tactics from the Opening Bell.
In Round 2, Soto landed a 'vicious' left-hook to Quarry's jaw 'dropping' the Orlando-based
fighter to the canvas. After rising, Quarry was met by a 'rampaging' Soto who came at
him with 'arms-and-elbows' flailing.
Soto continued with aggressive attack in Round 3, and used his strength in pounding
Quarry, who could not keep the strong Puerto Rican off of him. In this Round, Quarry
was 'warned' for low-blows.
But Quarry was able to take advantage of his speed in the Round 4, as Soto began
to slow down his pace. Quarry scored with rapid-fire left jabs to the head, and left-hooks
to the body on his slowing opponent. Again, Quarry was 'warned' for low-blows.
In a 'rough' Round 5, Soto went after Quarry with a host of 'illegal tactics', by elbowing
him in the face, and hitting low several times, bringing several 'warnings' from Referee
- Mills Lane.
At the end of Round 5, the Referee deducted {1-Point} from Pedro Soto for continuous
fouling.
During Rounds 6 and 7, Mike Quarry was able to score with good left-jabs while he stayed
outside and on the perimeter. But, each time that Pedro Soto moved in close, he would
maul Quarry and rough-house him into the Ropes, by using his head, shoulders and elbows.
This action, caused cuts around both of Quarry's eyes, and drew 'harsh' complaints from
Mike Quarry's corner.
In Round 8, Quarry got off to a good start, as he scored with a series of combinations to Soto's
head and then landed '2' good left-hooks to the body. But again Soto came in flailing forward with both
with fists-and-elbows.
As Soto was using his strength to maul Quarry, he slammed in an elbow that opened up a 'gash'
under Quarry's right-eye. In retaliation, Quarry 'intentionally' slammed in several left-hooks iow
and under Soto's belt-line.
Referee-Mills Lane had no choice but to penalize Quarry {1-Point}, and permit Pedro Soto a
2-minute rest period.
The 'point deduction' seemed to take the edge away from Mike Quarry, who then went to staying
way outside and away from the action as Pedro Soto aggressively pursued.
Soto was the stronger of the two during Rounds 9 and 10, as he continued to 'bull' his way forward
and inside, and 'rough-punched' Quarry during these '2' sessions.

After Bout Comments
Referee - Mills Lane >
"It was by far, the 'dirtiest' fight that I have ever been involved in. I felt bad for Mike in Round 8, as
Soto really did him 'dirty' by elbowing him under the right-eye. I don't blame Mike for going after Soto
with all those low-punches. But I had to penalize him a {point}.
Mike Quarry >
"Every time that I threw a punch, he threw an elbow. What are you going to do. The Judges said he
won, and that's it. He won, and I lost. That's the verdict."
"As for a 3rd-Bout with him {Pedro Soto}. I would do it, but I don't think the Promoters or Television
people would want it. I sure as Hell wouldn't want it if I were them."

~ Mike Quarry - Burning Himself Out ~
Mike Quarry, the #9 WBA ranked Light-Heavyweight is on a pace to burn himself
out by the age of 25.
Now, with a record of 50-7-3, Mike {Age; 24 years, 5 months} has '60-Bouts' under his
belt, nearly enough for '2' full careers as a Professional boxer.
In the past 9-Months {since November 26, 1974} > Mike has had '9' rough bouts in
compiling record of 7-2-0.
Along the way, Mike has been 'floored' twice in those bouts, but has also been 'staggered'
numerous times, and cut badly over his 'problematic' left-eye in several of these bouts.
Just 3-days after fighting {and losing} to Pedro Soto Las Vegas last month {July 25th}, Mike
agreed to face another 'young Tiger' in Mike Rossman, in a bout set for September 5th
in Las Vegas.
Mike Quarry, who at times wanted to quit boxing, has been encouraged to march on by
his Father - Jack Quarry.
Jack Quarry >
"I will not allow any of my sons to quit. There is no quit in the Quarry family. My boys are
fighters."
"Jerry's career is winding down, but Mike can still be a World Champion. He just needs to
catch a break or two, then he'll get that Title."

~ The Skinny ~
Mike is now ranked as the #8 WBA Light-Heavyweight.
Mike Quarry was supposed to battle New Jersey Middleweight - Mike Rossman on
Friday Night ~ September 5th, and in Las Vegas in a Televised bout thru Madison Square
Garden.
But, 7-Days before the bout, Mike Rossman pulled out due to a hand-injury.
In a quick 'fill-in', Fight Promoter/Boxing Manager - Pete Ashlock put together a decent
match-up between his fighter - Mike Quarry, and Puerto Rican Middleweight Champion
Tony 'Tani' Santiago.
Tony Santiago is a tall and lanky, 'hard-hitting' fighter from Puerto Rico, where he claims
to be the Middleweight Champion.
Santiago has won '11-Straight' bouts with {9 KO's} over the past 16-Months. 'Tani' is a
big 'right-hand' swinger, and can take you out with one-punch.

~ Quarry Rallies To Win Split-Decision Over Santiago ~
~ Quarry Floored, Comes Back To Win 10-Round Scrap ~
World-ranked Mike Quarry and 'little-known' Tony 'Tani' Santiago engaged in an 'action-packed'
10-Round bout last night in front of a sparse crowd of {1685} at the Sports Arena, where Quarry
rallied late to score a Split-Decision over a 'surprisingly' tough opponent.
After a 'listless' 1st-Round > Santiago exploded in Round 2, and tore into Quarry with a barrage
of right-hands, eventually flooring the 'favored' Quarry with a double right-hand to the jaw at the
{1:45 Mark}.
Quarry was up quickly at the '2-Count', but was now cautious of the lanky Puerto Rican's power.
A now confident Santiago charged forward in Rounds 3 and 4, and swung with heavy-hands as
Quarry stayed on the perimeter and relied on 'quick-footwork' to stay out of harm's way, while
he waited for an opening to counter.
Quarry started to make his comeback-charge in Round 5, as he 'rattled' Santiago with left-hooks
and right-hand leads to the head.
Quarry continued with his successful rally in Rounds 6 and 7, as he beat Santiago to the punch
while at Center-Ring, while primarily working over the thin-body of the Puerto Rican.
Both fighters laid back in Round 8, as both looked to catch their '2nd-Wind'. But Quarry came on
with a 'quick-attack' over the last 30-Seconds which caught Santiago off guard, and had him
backing away fast.
Over the last 2-Rounds, both fighters exchanged at Center-Ring, and each got in their 'licks' as
both were 'jarred' from punches to the jaw and head. But Quarry was the better in-fighter, as he
landed with more volume.
Scorecards
* Referee - Al Aldrich ........ 99-93 > Mike Quarry
* Judge - Mick Andrews .... 96-95 > Tony Santiago
* Judge - Bob Burns ......... 98-95 > Mike Quarry

Mike Quarry >
"Boy oh boy. Where do they find these guys. This guy {Tony Santiago} was one hard-puncher,
especially with the right-hand. In Round 2, all of a sudden I'm looking up at the Roof from the
canvas floor. He hit me hard and fast."
"He made me work, but I was the better-puncher down the stretch. I won the last 6-Rounds,
as I stayed busy, and he was only 'one-punching' me."

Mike Quarry vs. Mike Rossman
The 'Beginning of the Trilogy'.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
These 'two' fighters truly despised each other.
Mike Quarry was the original 'Schoolboy' Light-Heavyweight. But now, Mike was the experienced Professional
with a World Title Challenge under his belt, despite the brutal loss by {L TKO 4} back in June 1972.
Mike Rossman, was the 'new' Schoolboy, and competing in the Middleweight Division. It was Rossman who was
now the 'highly-touted' future Star.
'Rock-N-Roll' Mike Quarry ......... vs. ..........'The Jewish Bomber' Mike Rossman
