It was inevitable, Quillen was getting sparked. Stoppage may have been a smidge early, but if it went on Jacobs was going to get him. Jacobs came out possessed. Impressive!
Jacobs shouldn't have walked away so fast, how Quillin stayed upright who knows
Two of the classiest in the biz right there, they need to rematch.
I would have gave him a standing 8 ...but it wouldn't have saved him. Just more punishment.
I thought it was ridiculous of the commentators resorting to the cliched "Jacobs needs to be careful of not punching himself out"
You have an opportunity, you seize it because you may not get it again.
Respect to Jacobs for catching Quillen and pouncing. Respect to Quillen for being a gracious loser. Hopefully Quillen finally learns the dangers/ evils of starting slow.
I previously liked Harvey Dock as a ref. I won't say that changed but I do have some issues with the way things went down. The first being after Jacobs buzzes Quillen and chases. then they lock ed up and dock steps in to separate and Jacobs clubs Quillen behind the ear over docks shoulder without a word from dock. The second is, if you're gonna step in and shoo a fighter off, the other guy deserves an count. If there's no standing 8, then stay the hell out of the way till someone goes down. Third being the stiffarm/forearm use by Jacobs.
Finally credit goes to Jacobs for doing what he had to do, but strangley my skepticism hasn't budged. Perhaps because it was too quick to evaluate. I don't know.. There's something else there that doesn't feel right...
Jacobs vs GGG anyone? Bombs away.
Yeah it looked a little hasty in real time but the slow mo showed just how lost Peter was. Had that look of being knocked out standing up with his eyes open. Usually guys are on their way down with thats look for example Paul Williams.
I doubt the fight is up yet but if you want to see a real cherry of a ref job, take a gander at Daws/Nieto. The guy should be relegated to potato sack races.
Boxing is going too soft.
Lots of pussified stoppages these days. In The Ring there is a great section of articles entitled "What If.."
Makes you think about Taylor vs. Pavlik I and what might have been if Smoger (Greatest Ref Ever) had stopped it early, that's a disturbing reminder of certain potentialities. Or how about Pac-Man Vs Marquez 1 ? Pac Man knocked Marquez down three times in the first round. Yet Marquez came back to get a draw. Imagine if Joe Cortez would have stopped it on the 3rd knockdown ? There would have been no more Pac-Marquez fights because no-one would have complained.
I don't give a F**K if Qullins legs were doing the Whip - Nae Nae, he should not have been stopped the fight. It's not like it was the 10th round of a gruelling fight.
This stoppage was up there with the Lewis v.s. McCall 1 stoppage, it wasn't quite on the Calzaghe/Manfredo level but it was up there. The ref didn't even give Qullin time to gain his facilities. He just waived it off.
The referees are given too much authority over ending fights that it becomes ridiculous sometimes. I recognize the fact that they have the best interest of the fighter inside the ring but they have to give the boxers the benefit of the doubt.
It has gotten to the point were I don't think I'll ever see a ref do a ten count again. They just wave it off without even counting.
Boxing has definitely become pussified generally but each questionable call should be looked at. This one was not as hasty as I first thought looking at Quillin.
Ten counts have gone the way of the dodo bird and rightly so. When someone is knocked cold on the tarmac there is no reason to count to ten. Doing so could actually risk his life. Sloppy things like what happened tonight are a tough call when looked at closely. Perhaps he should have given him an eight count but boxing cant seem to hand that out properly. I see fights all the time with a rule saying no standing 8 counts and yet you get them.
Anyone else warch that and think what pirog coulda been if not for bad back
Definitely agreed and on your prior point. The question is does quillen get a stop in the action from another ref for hitting on the break (or is it one of those things where people refer to the protect yourself at all times thing and disregard. Also if quillen gets a standing 8 (was there no standing 8?) when does it start?
- If it starts when the guy touches down and gets up and gets the standard 8 count anyway, quillen didn't hit the ground (a feat in itself)..
- if it starts after dock sends jacobs to a neutral corner that didn't happen either.
Jacobs swings, quillen wobbles and jacobs walks away seemingly without dock calling for a break, Dock steps into the vacant space between them like he just got back from the bathroom and wanted an update. I believe he directs jacobs to "somewhere over there" and jacobs stands what looks like to be against the ropes between two corners. Dock turns his attention to quillen whos just steadied his legs and without a count, waves it off because Quillen is off in space somewhere. And just as dock is waving it off, Jacobs comes charging toward quillen from behind dock. I'm not saying it would have changed the equation if quillen was allowed an 8 count somewhere in there (he didn't know what was going on)...
but from the way that evolved... to quillens "nah, thats ok.. i dont need a rematch.. i'd rather tell the danny jacobs story in my post fight interview" (and considering that quillen sat out and held the belt before at Haymon's request till the pbc contract came through... and then relinquished it. Something feels amiss to me...(Not to discredit Jacobs for his work tonight, of course)
Maybe because it was only the 1st round, the ref could've cut him a little slack, but I don't think it would've made a difference in the end.
But what it does show is what the fuck has happened to Quillin? This potential "all American Dream" fighter of a few years back. A draw with Lee (not exactly a great fighter with respect) after coming in unprofessionally heavy and out of shape, and now this. His days are numbered surely if he can't be dedicated enough.
Just watched the fight that was a bad stoppage sure quillin was in big trouble but it was a big fight and ref should of gave quillin that chance to go on
I can see where people feel the stoppage was premature. That being said, I thought it was a fair stoppage. The fact that Peter didn't protest much and didn't seem eager for rematch tells me he was buzzed significantly.
Read a post earlier discussing GGG vs Jacobs. I like Jacob and Quillen but GGG destroys both of those guys. Guess each have a punchers chance and some athleticism but I see GGG stopping both early.
I agree, Quillin did not seem eager for a rematch.
As far as I'm concerned, Quillin is finished as a top Boxer.
No problem with the stoppage. If the fighter getting stopped thinks it's OK then it's absolutely ridiculous for fans to argue it's not (by the way, there is no standing 8 count in title fights).
After staggering across the ring from the final temple shot, Quillin was bopping on the spot like a drunk grandad at a wedding. He didn't even react to the ref grabbing him.
Yea. I was just saying that he was pretty much done. To me, he was out of it from when he ducked Korobov to fight Lee. That didn't work out well for him at all. And now, Jacobs was calling him out for a hot minute or two....and now we see why?! Jacobs had a feeling he had a chalk on Quillin, and so he did.
To be fair, I would have let Quillin continue for about another ten seconds. But, as the rules state, if the ref has any reason to administer any time outside of a foul, when the standing 8 count is not in effect, then the fight has to be stopped.
Watching a replay now, expecting to see a controversial stoppage! A little early, but not controversial. In my opinion, of course!;D
I hate first round knockouts in fights like this because it could have been a fluke by Quillin getting caught cold. Maybe if that wouldn't have happened in the first round, Quillin would have easily won. I'm not saying he would have necessarily, but maybe. First round knockouts at this level are usually flukes more than one fighter being really good.
I would like to see a rematch but if Quillin doesn't want one then whatever. I think Jacobs needs one more big fight like against the lee-saunders winner and if he wins, I fight with GGG would be big. As of now though, Jacobs would still be a massive under dog.
I don't see the problem. Quillin took like 20 unanswered punches. He didn't want any more.
Although it was hugely disappointing to watch the fight end in the first round, it's hard to criticize the ref for the stoppage. Ironically, had Quillin been knocked down, he would've gotten a few more seconds to clear his head..... then the right thing to do would've been for the ref to count until he got up, and then make a judgment on Quillin's condition to continue fighting. The usual is for the ref to ask the fighter to put his gloves up and walk to him.
Classy display by both fighters after the fight. I didn't realize they knew each other from way back. Type of fight where a rematch would make sense.
No problem with stoppage either. Quillin got caught early by a big punch. Happens. It makes you wonder whether it has anything to do with his weight. He seems huge for a middleweight.
Quillen was slightly over sold. He is a good fighter.. Andy Lee and now jacobs proved Quillen is limited. They didn't expose him rather they showed Quillen isn't a potential great.
Quillin was in trouble right from the beginning, that temple shot sent him into another world. The ref saved him from further punishment and it would've been severe, he should've taken a knee, but it was quite obvious he didn't know where his knees were at that time. He didn't complain about the stoppage and was extremely gracious in defeat, both men showed great sportsmanship. I think Quillin is done, he wasn't that forthcoming when a rematch was discussed?
That was a perfect stoppage by Harvey Dock. Quillin would have got splattered if he'd let it continue. Nice job by Jacobs but he'll be lucky to see round seven against Golovkin. Not sure that fight happens even though they both currently rent one of the twenty seven available WBA middleweight belts. Haymon will want him headlining cards and filling that Barclays Centre rather than purse bids against HBO and having to pay Golovkin a fortune to watch him batter the house fighter. I'm sure he can work something out with the WBA.
