Puerto Rico survives a major scare against the Netherlands to pull out a 4-3 win in extra innings!!!!
World Baseball Classic 2017: USA vs. Japan semifinal start time, TV channel, live stream info - CBSSports.com
Ok... another big night tonight!
Team USA squares off against Japan in the other semifinal game, for the right to meet Puerto Rico in the Championship Game tomorrow night.
Last night's game was beyond close and exciting, going to 11 innings before Puerto Rico pulled off the squeaker.
Netherlands proved more than a formidable opponent, as I myself didn't know how many Major Leaguers they have in their roster.
They have some great young talent, and will be a force in the WBC for many years to come.
I guess if one had to pick the European nation with the most baseball talent, that team is Netherlands.
Tonight's game figures to attract another huge crowd to Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.
As I may have stated before, I'm hoping for a USA win... so the interest can be double in intensity tomorrow night.
A USA win will ratchet up interest in the WBC even more.
It's a fact of life that US interest in a sport has a lot to do with its popularity.... again... I exclude the giant football/ soccer from that, as it's humongous all over the globe with or without US interest.
But it does help to have the USA interested in a team sport.
Puerto Rico and Japan are the only teams to have gone undefeated so far in this Classic, with the USA having dropped games to the Dominican Republic (Round 1) and Puerto Rico (Round 2) and yet still qualified for the Semifinal Round.
Games are starting at 9 pm local time, which means a midnight to 1 am bedtime for me..... but last night's game went extra innings and NO WAY I was going to bed.
Looking forward to the fireworks tonight!!!!
Some of my favorite plays so far in this incredibly exciting World Baseball Classic:
Javier Baez "no-look" tag against the Dominican Republic

Adam Jones robbing Manny Machado (DR) of a home run
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8zw182AEIAM
Eddie Rosario's laser throw to nail Dominican runner at the plate

It's 2-1 USA in the middle of the 8th under a steady but light rain.
If the score holds, it's PR - USA for all the marbles tomorrow night.

Final: USA over Japan 3-1
Tomorrow's Championship Game: Puerto Rico vs. USA
Yanks will win it then?
Ok........ it's game time between..............
USA
vs.
Puerto Rico
Playball!!!!!!!
Well............. very anticlimactic thus far. :(
Puerto Rico getting a no-hitter thrown at them in the 7th inning. Things don't look good for us. :(
USA leading 4-0 and threatening to score more.
Well..... not the result I wanted, as the USA beats Puerto Rico 8-0 to win the World Baseball Classic. But all credit in the world to the USA team which came out pumped up and ready to take the title. Their starting pitcher Marcus Stroman was just superb, shutting down the high-powered Puerto Rican offense for the first time in the tournament. Puerto Rico now finishes 2nd for the second straight Classic, having lost the Championship Game to the Dominican Republic back in 2013.
By all measures, the Classic was a roaring success... and with the USA having won, hopefully that will stoke even more interest in future Classics, and tone down Major League Baseball's objections that they've had in the past.
Puerto Rico celebrated the return of its World Baseball Classic team a couple of days back. Although we lost in the Final to the U.S. team, the Puerto Rico team broke all sorts of records and had quite a run, going undefeated until that Finals loss. I was happy, but not surprised, to see the results of the All-Star WBC 2017 team, a veritable Who's Who of baseball stars from the Major Leagues. Puerto Rico had five players on that "Dream Team".
