rumor is derrick james will be aj's new trainer
AJ needs to go back to basics and get back with Robert McCracken. No harm in trying different trainers and methods whilst he is on a sabbatical but preparation for a fight he needs to be comfortable. AJ seems to be confusing himself and overthinking his strategy for his opponents. Whilst his last performance against Usyk was better he still fell for the little tricks and feints from Ukrainian. His mental breakdown and rant exposed his emotional limitations and insecurities.
Anthony Joshua looks set to return against unbeaten heavyweight Demsey McKean in April, according to reports.
Joshua last fought in August, suffering a second straight decision defeat by Oleksandr Usyk, as the Briton failed to regain the world titles that he lost to the unbeaten Ukrainian in 2021.
Joshua, 33, had been rumoured to face old rival Dillian Whyte next, but Talksport and Fight Disciples have now reported that McKean is the likeliest next opponent for “AJ”.
Australian McKean is undefeated at 22-0, with 14 of his wins having come via knockout. Most recently the 32-year-old stopped Patrick Korte in the third round in October.
That victory saw McKean claim the vacant IBF Intercontinental heavyweight title.
Meanwhile, Joshua is seeking a first win since December 2020, when he knocked out Kubrat Pulev in Round 9.
Joshua then suffered back-to-back losses to Usyk, which marked the second and third defeats of the Briton’s professional career. AJ was stopped by Andy Ruiz Jr in June 2019 for a first pro loss, before he avenged the defeat by outpointing the Mexican-American at the end of that year.
Joshua vs McKean could reportedly take place in April, after AJ’s promoter Eddie Hearn said the ‘ultimate 2023’ for his fighter would entail three fights, with a clash against Tyson Fury or Deontay Wilder ‘nailed on’.

Australian heavyweight Demsey McKean confirmed talks have taken place to be Anthony Joshua's next opponent, insisting he can "retire" the Briton.
"We are one of the frontrunners for a possible opponent for Anthony Joshua," he told Sky Sports.
"I could be (the man to retire Joshua) and I am very confident I can do that. But don't get me wrong, there is still more fights for AJ. If he loses to me, a top-10 heavyweight as well, that shouldn't be the end.
"People probably don't give him the credit he deserves, what he has done for the heavyweight game. He has brought a lot of eyes and money into the heavyweight division.
"He is probably the biggest name in boxing, everyone is after him, including me. It is the name to have on your resume. There are still fights to be made and people are still going to pay to watch those fights. But three losses in a row, does he need to keep doing this, he is well set up now?
"He probably still has his doubts, he still doubts himself a lot, I know that. But who wouldn't when they are at the top, in the limelight and cop a lot of criticism. There are a lot of factors but I have the skills to do that (retire him) for sure."
"I feel confident if that fight goes through," he said. "The only doubt I have is that he doesn't want to fight a southpaw.
"It would be a shame. I have been on the brink of some very big fights myself. I have come close to fighting Dillian Whyte as well. I think it is sad that some of the elite boxers in the world pick and choose who they fight. We would not have had this back in the old days.
"Even with Tyson Fury a few years ago, when his fight fell through with Deontay Wilder and he was looking for a last-minute replacement. And again it came down to not wanting to fight a southpaw.
"The world has gone mad, and all these so-called champion boxers don't want to fight a southpaw. Let's hope he (Joshua mans up) and fights this time.
"I have been sparing with him for years, I have been in his camp twice. He knows it is going to be a hard fight, by the rounds I give these guys.
"He is a smooth operator, there aren't too many who move like him. His size is an advantage and disadvantage for him."
Commenting on a potential fight between Joshua and McKean, the Australian's promoter, Angelo Di Carlo, told Sky Sports: "We are in discussion with our promotional partner Eddie Hearn regarding Demsey's next fight.
"We have made it clear that we are ready for the big fights and are more than willing to take on AJ in Australia or England.
"Demsey is now No 10 in the WBO and No 11 in the IBF. So whether it's AJ or another, he is well positioned for a big fight in 2023."

i thnk derrick will have a say on who aj fights next & i doubt it's demsey. i think they might go with otto wallin
demsey & wallin will both be somewhat easy for aj
why doesnt he fight ortiz
Wallin's promoter Dmitry Salita maintains that Joshua must come back against a credible opponent.
"We will see how serious Joshua is about returning to an elite heavyweight level by the level of the opponent he selects. He can beat the likes of McKean in an impressive fashion training by himself," Salita told Sky Sports.
"So a fight with such an opponent will not prove anything as an elite boxer and will not be able to see actual improvements from a new trainer.
"Joshua has been associated with lots of big names. Is it real? I don't know. Not if he fights a no-name with a glossy record."
"After Wilder lost to Fury he fought a bone fide, world-rated, legitimate top 10 heavyweight. And is now in play to fight the best, based on his improvement with his new trainer Malik Scott. I have a lot of respect for the work that Malik did with Wilder and he was confident to take on a serious fighter after that brutal loss," Salita said.
Wallin is available to box Joshua in his comeback bout.
"Otto is willing and ready to come to the UK on April 1 to fight Anthony Joshua. That would be a massive fight!" his promoter declared.
"Otto is interested in fighting Joshua and that is the fight that seems to make sense especially if Fury fights Usyk in March. Otto believes he will beat Joshua and with that deserve the Fury rematch.
"Even if it's not Otto, the level of opponent will tell us where Joshua is at now," Salita concluded.
"Joshua is a very accomplished fighter and was one of the best heavyweights of this generation. As a fan if he's still got it, I would love to see him fight the big fights."

Anthony Joshua set to fight Jermaine Franklin on April 1 in comeback bout
https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/21043...leksandr-usyk/
sounds like it's jermaine franklin on april first
"My next fight is scheduled for December. Not ideal but everything is part of a bigger picture," Joshua confirmed on his Instagram story.

more inactivity from aj
It does not make any sense. These are his prime years and AJ should be active, as he originally wanted to after the Franklin fight to fight in 3 months. If he is working with his trainer and improving his technique that makes sense and does not want to risk a fight in between but he would surely want a fight before December?
AJ may have other business dealing in which case he is semi retired and has one foot out of the ring.
Simon Jordan says he has had heard rumours that Saudi Arabia are planning to a stage a three-fight tournament involving Anthony Joshua, Tyson Fury, Oleksandr Usyk and Deontay Wilder. The idea is that Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk and Anthony Joshua vs Deontay Wilder take place in December, with the winners set to meet further down the line in a battle for heavyweight supremacy.
Joshua was expected to return to the ring in the summer but in a shocking twist, the Watford powerhouse revealed he would instead be boxing in December. "My next fight is scheduled for December," Joshua told his 15.2million followers on Instagram earlier this week. "Not ideal but everything is part of a bigger picture."
Jordan says he has heard that Joshua's next fight will be against Wilder over in the middle east at the same time that Usyk and Fury square off for their long-awaited four-belt shoot-out. Both parties were unable to thrash out a deal for April after a disagreement over the purse split for the rematch.
But if what Jordan is hearing is true then a new undisputed champion could be crowned before the end of the year.

The idea sounds terrific (other than the "waiting until December" part).
Not to be the one throwing the wet towel here but... why on Earth would Fury all of a sudden agree to fight Usyk when it hasn't happened so far, and Fury seems to be doing everything in his power to avoid it?
Also Joshua facing Wilder. You mean the same Wilder that Hearn is saying AJ isn't ready for yet... and first AJ needs a "tuneup"?
I mean hell... I like this fantasy as much as the next guy (would still like it sooner, though).
But I'm not gonna hold my breath waiting for it.
Retire... there is no way he is beating Fury, Wilder or Usyk. lolol...
Whyte accuses Joshua of lying about not fighting again until December.
'That’s lie, it’s a lie. Joshua isn’t going to wait until December to fight. If he’s not injured then why would he wait until December to fight?' Whyte said on iFL TV.
'Joshua is trying to create some mystery, he thinks he’s some kind of mystery man these days. No one believes it. Why would he not fight until December if he can potentially have three fights this year?
'He’s just trying to create some sort of mystery, he’s a strange guy and he’s doing some strange stuff. He’s definitely going to fight before December, 100%.'

Deontay Wilder’s trainer Malik Scott has confirmed that negotiations are taking place for major heavyweight fights to be staged in Saudi Arabia this year.
The speculation suggested that Anthony Joshua is finally lining up a showdown with Wilder in December.
The rumour also claimed that the Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk undisputed world title fight is now being eyed for the same month in the same part of the world, which was already expected to be the case.
The winners would then meet in an ultimate heavyweight showdown in 2024.
Asked about this on Monday, Wilder’s trainer Scott told iFL TV: “I’m on the inside of the meetings, Deontay has me sitting right to him when we’re doing these meetings.
“What I can say is the things people are hearing are not fibs.
“The negotiations have begun, not with certain fighters or certain things, but the negotiations are definitely in tact…
“Everything is getting together, we’re gonna see what fighters really wanna fight at that level.
“The ones that do, Deontay is gonna knock out and he’s gonna become two-time heavyweight champion of the world.
“I can say that those rumours are true, negotiations are going on and big fights are gonna be happening.
“Not just with us, with a lot of top fighters out there in the heavyweight division in Saudi Arabia.”
Asked directly about Anthony Joshua, Scott replied: “If you ask me, that’s the only fight I want for Deontay.
“If we could get Usyk, of course, because he’s got the belts. I’m fully with that.
“But I’m very, very big on Deontay fighting Anthony Joshua.
“I think it’s good not just for boxing, I think it’s good for so many reasons…
“Every time someone comes to me and says, ‘What’s next for Deontay?’ I always say, ‘I’m hoping for Joshua.’
“Deontay wants the fight, I want the fight, Shelly Finkel wants the fight. This whole side over here wants the fight.
“We’re gonna see what AJ does now, the ball is kind of in his court, so we’re gonna see how he’s gonna take advantage of it.
“We’re ready.”

yawn...nothing in the HW will ever happen. Tyson retires in August. Joshua goes into showbiz. Usyk falls on his sword in Ukraine when Putin takes that whole place over by late-May maximum. And Deontay is left shouting bomb squad at the wall.
;D ;D
For the first time in recent memory you've actually come up with a fairly believable prediction. ;D
Although if I may... I'd put in a few personal tweaks of my own.
Tyson retires in August AND... goes into showbiz.
Joshua cleans out the lower echelons of the division... THEN retires to go into showbiz, only to find Tyson has already beat him to it, which prompts AJ to go into politics.
Usyk collects all the belts of an already forgettable division... then retires in glory to his restored homeland in Ukraine. Zelenskyy rewards him with an honorary position in his Cabinet.
Deontay retires in frustration, but gets drawn into a career in rap by his buddies.
Sadly I think you guys are right

In the US years ago people moved towards 'amatuer' sports on TV, like college football etc. this may be the way to see proper showbiz-less boxing, trouble is its been almost as bent as the pro scene
“So we spoke last night to his team and this morning," Hearn told iFL TV. "We made an offer, and they felt that offer was unacceptable. We may be too far out on the money to make that fight. We’re looking at two other opponents for August 12. The key for us, if we can’t make the Deontay Wilder fight it’s not that it has to be Dillian. AJ wants it, that’s the fight AJ wanted."
There is a massive money offer in the Middle East for Wilder and Joshua to fight, with Hearn recently returning from a trip to Riyadh where he met with officials from Saudi Arabia. The American is keen on the bout, as is Joshua, but nothing is absolutely signed of today.
"If we’ve got the Wilder fight done, we can fight someone else from the top 15 on August 12," Hearn added. "We still want a decent, proper fight to prepare yourself for Deontay Wilder. But if we can’t get the Wilder fight done, then we need a much bigger fight on August 12, or we look at Tyson Fury in September.
"But I believe, and Frank spoke to the guys at Skills Challenge last night, that we’re going to get that fight made with Wilder. “So once we do that August 12th, if we can’t make a Dillian Whyte fight, then we take someone else in the top 15. AJ’s desire to fight Dillian Whyte.
“For me, I think if you’ve got Deontay Wilder locked in for December, fighting Dillian Whyte on August 12th is risky, bear in mind the amount of money you’re about to fight Deontay Wilder for, but he and Derrick James specifically requested Dillian Whyte. The issue is the money Dillian Whyte wants and the money AJ wants.
"The market is starting to change a little bit in general for boxing, and I don’t think we can get to the number that Dillian wants for that fight, in all honesty. I think Dillian wants to fight, and I think AJ wants to fight, but we may well run out of time."

ANTHONY JOSHUA could look to face former sparring partner Agit Kabayel after his rematch with Dillian Whyte collapsed.
AJ and Whyte were in negotiations to fight on August 12 but Eddie Hearn came out to say the deal broke down.
And now the promoter has named European champion Kabayel - who sparred AJ in 2018 - as a potential replacement.
Hearn said on Boxing Social: “Kabayel was the European champion, he’s top 15.
"He’s on a list of four or five that it could be, but we need to close it out this weekend really if he's going to fight on August 12."
Kabayel, 30, is unbeaten at 23-0 and fought as recently in March, beating Agron Smakici.
Joshua, 33, returned with a victory in April against Jermiane Franklin, 29, his first under coach Derrick James.
So Hearn wants the pair to have one more bout together before the proposed Saudi Arabia blockbuster with Deontay Wilder, 37, in December.
He claimed Whyte, 35, turned down an offer to fight Joshua in a rematch of the grudge match he lost in 2015.
But the fuming former world title challenger hit back to set the record straight.
Whyte told SunSport: "They’re talking rubbish. I haven’t turned down the fight.
"All I got, after Eddie talked publicly and often about making me an offer to fight AJ, was a very short email late in the evening on Friday 2 June.
"I absolutely 100 per cent want to fight AJ and called Eddie to discuss the offer but couldn’t get hold of him.
"I messaged him too. I didn’t hear back from him so I sent him an email to confirm I wanted the fight.
"I didn’t turn down the offer or propose a counter-offer. All I did was ask normal questions on his three-line email so-called offer.
"Even before I emailed, Eddie was already saying publicly that his offer was unacceptable. So, why make it in the first place?
"It is out of order to use me to boost AJ’s value in negotiations for the Wilder fight, without any intention to fight me.
"Heavyweight boxing is in an absolute mess at the moment and bulls*** like this doesn’t help."

Anthony Joshua's team have inserted a one-way rematch clause in his favour in a late addition to the contractual terms which has complicated negotiations for a heavyweight fight with Dillian Whyte.
Whyte resumed negotiations last week after he had verbally challenged promoter Eddie Hearn over a breakdown in communication regarding what would be a hotly-anticipated rematch, which it is hoped will be staged at The O2 on August 12.
The Brixton man has indicated he would take the proposed bout against his British rival - and is open to a "winner-takes-all and moves on" fight.
"I've been up for fighting Joshua since the day I lost to him in 2015," Whyte previously told Sky Sports.
"The score is 1-1 so far. He's won one. I beat him in the amateurs, he beat me in the pros so I want to get even."
"I would love nothing more than to have a chance to avenge my defeat," he added.
"I'll just go to war. I want to go to war because I think that's a good way to fight him, pressure him, back him up and start getting him on the back foot as early as possible and I'm strong enough, I'm big enough to do that.
"I carry enough power obviously to back him up and to knock him out."
https://www.msn.com/en-gb/sport/boxi...f4daf32&ei=347
Hearn has now told Boxing Social: "Against my advice, Joshua came back last night and said, 'I don't give a f*** about the rematch clause, I'm gonna knock him out, so just tell him to sign the contract.'
"Dillian Whyte had replied to us and said, 'I'm not gonna do any promotion around the event, I don't want a rematch clause, blah, blah, blah.'
"So we've just gone back now and given him [a young contender's] promotional requirements, no rematch clause, August 12, done."

Can't help thinking that AJ will not be in boxing for much longer. He was never as good as the hype made him out to be earlier on (good though he was) and he has certainly lost that 'eye of the tiger' nowadays?
