Some good questions for the Republican debate tonight. I'm sure it's going to be heavily focused on policy and not culture war stuff so these questions will all get asked at some point anyway.

When Rep. Gohmert tried to file a lawsuit arguing Eastman's theory of Pence's powers, Eastman lobbied against it."Eastman didn’t want it tested in court because he knew it would fail. He didn’t want a ruling on its legality, because he knew it was illegal," says

On the matter of honesty -- among Trump voters -- Trump leads 'religious leaders' by nearly 30 percentage points and 'friends and family' by 8 percentage points.
Trump leads among those say it's very important a nominee is honest & trustworthy.

CNN Senior Data Reporter Harry Enten outlined how the four criminal indictment against Donald Trump have impacted his chances in the 2024 presidential election against Joe Biden.
[..]
“The GOP base has made up its mind when it comes to these indictments,” Enten told Acosta after presenting polling that shows over 80% of the GOP disapprove of the Trump indictments. “They don’t believe that Trump should have been charged with a crime. The vast majority believe that. And the fact is, it just does not seem like there’s any changing of their minds on any of this, no matter how many indictments there are.”
[..]
When it came to a hypothetical general election between Trump and Biden, Enten showed that Trump is in a “stronger position” against Biden than he was in the entire 2020 election. Enten cited a poll from Quinnipiac which shows Biden and Trump statistically tied in a general election match up.
“The polling indicates that Trump is, in fact, in a stronger position at this point than he was during the entire 2020 campaign, according to the national polls. If we had state level polling, I wouldn’t even be surprised if Trump were ahead in the swing states that are most important,” the reporter concluded.

As we discussed
a couple of months ago, the former Republican president, while in office, spent much of his White House tenure trying to turn Justice Department prosecutors into his own personal attack dogs. The New York Times reported last year that Trump and his team “tried to turn the nation’s law enforcement apparatus into an instrument of political power” to carry out the Republican’s wishes. A Washington Post analysis published soon after highlighted the many instances in which Trump not only leaned on the Justice Department to follow his whims, but also Trump’s efforts to push federal law enforcement to validate the Big Lie in the wake of his election defeat.
The Republican’s weaponization efforts reached a truly amazing pinnacle less than a month before Election Day 2020, when Trump publicly called on federal prosecutors to go after Biden — at the time, the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee who was leading the Republican incumbent in the polls — accusing him of undefined crimes. The then-president added that his future successor shouldn’t be “allowed” to run against him.
On Oct. 7, 2020, with early voting underway across much of the country, Politico published an especially memorable headline: “‘Where are all of the arrests?’: Trump demands Barr lock up his foes.”
The next day, the Republican incumbent spoke to Fox Business' Maria Bartiromo and called on the Justice Department to "indict" his perceived Democratic foes — including Biden.

Seriously how do they expect this to be a vote winner anymore? It isn't even close to being true, not that that kind of thing matters in politics these days.

"Defiant Trump seeks to gain advantage by using mugshot in fundraising push"
Headline from The Guardian.
Ever the snake oil salesman... ever the Pied Piper. Trump once infamously said he could shoot someone in the middle of 5th Avenue, and nothing would happen. It's the only truth he's ever uttered in more than six years.
He knows his Minions will be standing in line, wallets in hand.
Here's the article link:
https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/polit...27162fff&ei=18
It used to be a politician, or worse... a former President... would hide in shame from being accurately accused of breaking the law.
But these are strange times indeed.
Trump's mugshot is awful. You would have thought he would have chosen a better one when he was looking in the mirror practicing his pose.
Trump wins in 2024, not even close.
American elections tend to come down to how the economy performed, particularly in the last six months before the election. It's not impossible there's a recession in America starting anytime over the next year. The Fed are cranking interest rates with the express purpose of slowing the economy to flatten inflation and they may easily have already put them up enough to tip the economy into recession at some point.
Add on the fact that there's been a burst of inflation for the first time in forty years. A lot of voters have never experienced that and voters have zero understanding of economics so they're going to blame the person currently in office. Trying to explain to them it's been caused entirely* by disruptions to the supply of goods and services due to the pandemic, good luck with that. Trump will simply say if I get reelected you'll go back to zero inflation like it was when I was prez before and a lot of people will believe it.
Then add on interest rates the highest they've been this century and that feeding into peoples' mortgage and other monthly payments. Even though inflation is now under three percent monthly payments are up in a big way. Look what that's doing to the popularity of the conservative government in Britain. Trump can tell people he'll put interest rates to zero and people will believe him. Biden will be stuck trying to explain monetary policy and open market operations to the American electorate. Hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.
Forget the Republican party actually holding Trump to account. They wouldn't impeach him after he tried to overthrow the government saying it should be left to the courts. Now they're saying he shouldn't be tried in court over it. They won't respect any future guilty verdicts as just and they won't accept the results of any future elections they don't win. Trump could easily win again and if he doesn't he's radicalised the party to the extent that it's now an ongoing threat to democracy and it's only a matter of time until they manage to get some future fascist cult leader elected president.
*You would think at least some of the inflation would have come from increased government spending and some must have done at some point but a lot of countries who didn't spend a coin on any bailouts for individuals or businesses like Mexico had higher inflation than America. The numbers will eventually show government spending played some part in American inflation but who was president when that spending happened? Mostly it was Trump. The one big bailout bill passed under Biden was negotiated under Trump and Trump was pushing for even bigger cheques to be mailed out.

Just in case anyone could use a refresher, here are the most recent six "scandals" that have preoccupied Republicans during the last two Democratic administrations:
- Benghazi
- IRS tea party targeting
- Hillary's email
- Durham investigation
- Afghanistan withdrawal
- Hunter Biden
And here's how they turned out:

There was a lot of blather at the Republican debate last night about the need to supercharge our energy production, all of it centered on fossil fuels. (For some reason Republicans have no apparent interest in supercharging any other type of energy production.) This makes me think that a lot of people don't realize just how much US oil and gas production has skyrocketed over the past 20 years. It's more than doubled:
Here is annual growth in crude oil production by president:
- Bush: -1.4% per year
- Obama: +9.1% per year
- Trump: +6.2% per year
- Biden (so far): +5.9% per year
https://jabberwocking.com/us-fossil-...past-20-years/
It's now at a record level by the way.
Trump wins in a Landslide.

There is at the very least a 50% chance that trump will be assassinated. TPTB can simply not allow him to be elected president again. They will do anything to stop him.

Here's hoping for once you are right Brock. ;)
I stopped watching as soon as I saw it was Tucker Carlson.
Two things:
- I refuse to listen to ANYTHING Tucker Carlson has to say. He could be reciting the Declaration of Independence and I wouldn't listen to him.
- I don't wish for anyone's assassination. I only wish for Trump to be prevented from running for President again. AND... to get whatever just punishment he deserves for having incited the Jan 6th riots.
... AND for trying to steal the election by coercing election officials.
... AND for having manipulated and hidden the facts during the course of the COVID pandemic.
... AND for whatever else can be proven in a criminal aspect.
“Cannot allow him to be elected President again” ;D yeh he’s doing a damn fine job off of loss and repeated failed endorsements State to State. The man will never come close to fifty percent. Math just doesn’t add up. Keep rootin for the grifting traitor stuck on rewind at the detriment of Republic. Man so tough and rehearsed mean mugging :lolhaha: that he literally phoned it in and avoided confrontation. Just hope he didn’t lie about his foot size too those shower shoes need to be comfy!
Yup.
I saw Carlson 14 seconds in and shut it off.
I can't help it at this point. It's a hardwired reflex.
Putin’s puppets gonna puppet.
He doesn't have to come anywhere near close to fifty percent to win. He needs 270 electoral college votes to win and because of the fact that GOP voters are more evenly distributed amongst the states he can win with 46%.
Or with even substantially less. The reason? Third, fourth or fifth party votes.
Cornell West is running against him. This guy is a radical left academic who has been a talking head on various channels including Fox when they want a looney lefty over the years. The only thing West hates more than the GOP is the Democratic party who he considers corporate sellouts. He has a massive tax bill and like Jill Stein back in 2016 (whose vote totals in WI PA and MI handed the presidency to Trump) is being funded by dark money. He has apparently managed to run up a tax bill and I'm guessing this will be wiped out for him as part of the deal. West, a black man, only needs to sttract a tiny percentage of the lefty/socialist black vote and that could easily be enough. See here from a former GOP political strategist:
This is deceiving. A Biden +4 or +5 nationally is effectively an electoral vote tie. The entire race comes down to if fewer than 250k voters across PA, MI, WI, and AZ who voted for Biden in 2020 do so again. If they sit it out or vote for a third candidate, Trump wins.
https://twitter.com/jefftimmer/statu...21577251074048
Then there's RFK Junior. I don't think he'll go third party but he's got the requisite Trump-like levels of narcissism and spite to run as a Trump booster. There's a huge chunk of the Democratic base open to antivax and endless other conspiracy theories and this is virgin territory due to the Democratic party being basically sane and not exploiting this shit. Junior could cause some voters to stay at home at the very least.
By far the biggest threat is No Labels. If they do what they seem to be planning to do and recruit a plausible figurehead like Manchin that would effectively hand the election to Trump no matter how badly he does. They've already raised nearly a hundred million and one of the big donors is Clarence Thomas's sugar daddy. You might wonder why GOP billionaires who've spent decades funding GOP candidates might suddenly simultaneously support a third party candidate eh:
https://www.msnbc.com/opinion/msnbc-...bels-rcna96723
Lots more out there to read about these fuckers. Bottom line is political strategists on both sides think Trump wins easily if they put up a credible candidate and of course they only seem to be trying to get on the ballot in blue and purple states. How about that.
More generally I think you're whistling past the graveyard here a little bit. The old GOP is no more. Nearly eighty percent of GOP voters are voting Trump or Ron in the primaries and Ron is running to the right of Trump on every issue. They're a full blown fascist cult now and that isn't going to reverse. Look at the ties for fuck's sake:
Attachment 6188
It's only a matter of time until circumstances conspire to get either Trump or a future fascist cult leader elected and you can work out how it's going to go from there without too much effort. America is in big trouble sooner or later.

Great to read that the Proud Boys' former leader Enrique Tarrio has been jailed for 22 years for orchestrating the attack on the US Capitol on 6 January 2021.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-66712589
Like all strongmen, Trump thinks big and is unencumbered by moral precepts or other checks on behavior. Such leaders specialize in getting others to do things that were previously unthinkable, like planning an assault on the U.S. Capitol, and they lead their enablers to think that they will get away with everything as long as they stay loyal.
Meadows is at the center of this story of authoritarian corruption and violence. Every coup has a central figure who has privileged access to the individual or individuals leading the takeover and acts as the liaison of the co-conspirators. Here that person was Meadows. His desperate attempt
to get his case moved to federal court from Georgia by claiming that he acted as a federal officer out to safeguard "free and fair elections" is belied by a mountain of evidence, not least the chilling texts Meadows exchanged with GOP lawmakers Chip Roy and Mike Lee between Nov. 2020 and Jan. 6, 2021.

You’ve probably already forgotten about Aaron Van Landevelde. You shouldn’t, though. He was one of that small band of brothers and sisters who actually stopped the steal in 2020 and ended the Trump presidency. Tim Alberta told his story in Politico:In the end, it wasn’t a senator or a judge or a general who stood up to the leader of the free world. There was no dramatic, made-for-Hollywood collision of cosmic egos. Rather, the death knell of Trump’s presidency was sounded by a baby-faced lawyer, looking over his glasses on a grainy Zoom feed on a gloomy Monday afternoon, reading from a statement that reflected a courage and moral clarity that has gone AWOL from his party, pleading with the tens of thousands of people watching online to understand that some lines can never be uncrossed.Van Langevelde was a member of Michigan’s board of state canvassers, the ministerial body with the sole authority under state law to make Joe Biden’s victory over Trump official.
Republicans were heavily pressuring the young lawyer to block the certification of Biden’s victory. He refused.
[...]
As a result of his stand, Van Langevelde was later removed from the board, even as the Michigan GOP quadrupled down on election denialism. On Monday, the NYT’s Nick Corasaniti documented the party’s extraordinary crazification and collapse.
