Re: This day in boxing. A look back.
Ten years ago today............ one of my favorite fights of ALL TIME! ;D ;D
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=55uruqDyapg
I remember being in a hotel room watching this fight and jumping all over the room like a jackrabbit as Margacheato was getting the CRAP beat out of him. ;D ;D

Re: This day in boxing. A look back.
I was shocked at watching that beat down too. Very surprised to see Shane do what he did but kind of made sense when the news came out afterwards.

Re: This day in boxing. A look back.
Running random but ended up on the 'title' run of Bruce Curry and had no clue how near if not over the edge he was over last number of fights. In and out of the ring. Shot is a strong word but he was clearly running on heart and pure instinct as a champion! He got tossed in early and had some wars with Brooks, Benitez and was wrecked by Hearns but apparently was pretty mentally scarred with extreme paranoia and violent mood swings early on. Actually a messed up tale of two brothers and levels. After this one he tracked down his trainer Jessie Reid at a Vegas gym and tried to fight him..then he brought a gun and tried to shoot him :-X. Costello making his moment too http://youtu.be/SD5gpMBSCBs

Everyone was writing him off but man how great it was to watch him beat down that guy. Still remember that fight was a great night and a good through back for the old guy back then love boxing.

I think the rematch was better version of Holyfeild because he fought a smarter fight. Holyfeild rushing in won him a lot but he was a great boxer and could be very defensive when he needed to be.

The second fight gets forgotten and remembered more for "fan man". I think the interval as they "sorted out" fan man allowed Holyfield to have a breather and change his strategy in the fight and get that decision. I think people were telling Holyfield that he was behind during the rest.
Holyfield fought recklessly in the first fight when he was punched low which I think was a deliberate ploy by Bowe to take Evander off his game.

James Toney at his very best and he cut up the Blade and made a mess of his face. Beautiful skill yet so barbaric the beating.

Bowe was definitely not adverse to fouling a guy. I think that was the thing with Tyson gnawing on his ear too. It wasn't so much Mike 'snapping' as it was being completely out of ideas and panicking a bit. You could see immediately after, he tapped his gloves together and looked at Holyfield like 'yes please please rush in wide open into this right'. Bowe also went after the bell early in both fights and Holyfield swung right back.

True, Bowe was getting outboxed early by Evander in their first fight. Although Bowe's jab was giving Holyfield a lot of trouble. The fouling worked and Holyfield went crazy and fought dumb.
Second fight Holyfield had Manny in his corner and had the rhythm to outbox Bowe.

That first round was Holyfield boxing top notch, then I think Bowe went late (3rd or 4th) ? and both toppled in corner and poor Manny got caught up in it. But he got Holyfield back on track. Been awhile have to have another look.

I think this was one of Terrys most complete performances but forgot how fast Daniels started and even rocked Norris. Great year for boxing!

http://youtu.be/C9DMgBF9lV4 Duran in top form here. Lampkin was left in a bad way but would resume career briefly. Can you imagine guys traveling for 15 rounds and fighting in that heat today.
-
Re: This day in boxing. A look back.
That was one hell of a battle. Lampkin got the double whammy between the left hook on the button, and the exhaustion he must've been feeling by the 14th round.

He was the most gifted fighter to come from the island consider him to Sugar Ray best win because it put him on the map after words he just stayed in the game way to long.

Yeah he did. Some of those later knockout losses he suffered were sooooooo unnecessary. Pity he didn't have someone keeping him from doing that. Age-old story.

Well did not help he had been fighting top notch guys since he was 16 people say he was not old when he stopped but the miles had been there since he was 20 years of age pretty much.

Re: This day in boxing. A look back.
So Benitez lied about his age at 14 to fight in the amateurs, beat to exceptional world champions in his teens only lost to ATG Leonard and Hearns, knocks out Hope with that big right hand! What a great fighter.
I thought he was going to beat Hamsho but barely survived the 3rd round dropped 4 times. Good fight.

Re: This day in boxing. A look back.
I think i may well have posted this last August 18 in 2018. Anyway in case I did not here is the Nigel Benn v Iran Barkley fight from 18 AUGUST 1990
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RtKgZdT9JGQ

Re: This day in boxing. A look back.
That was a good video, showing a young Bob Arum.
That fight should have carried on if there was no 3 knock down rule as Iran was still ready.
Round 2 would have been good to see!
