Re: Calzaghe - Hopkins Predictions, RD by RD, Results FREE FOR ALL CHAT
I give hopkins credit for his fighting ability.
I was worried when calzaghe went down, it was on his nose and not chin and he got up immeadiately but it was a great test for joe.
Hopkins showed that he is a great counter puncher with probably his best performance in a long time.
However the dirtyness from hopkins was a joke, the claiming of low blows was pathetic when everyone saw it wasnt a low blow. The use of the head was pathetic, immense clinching made for an ugly fight...he really did try everything in the book (or, not allowed in the book, to win). I didnt like this aspect of it AT ALL!
However as a true champ, calzaghes class came through at the end, bar the 9th, the last 6 rounds were all calzaghe, hopkins only took the 9th because of the rest he forced (by cheating) when it clearly was not a low blow.
I dont like cortez' referring though, it was too leanient towards hopkins who constantly broke the rules by use of the head. BUT I MUST SAY that i have respect for cortez in that he saw that hopkins was cheating and did not deduct a point for the 'pretend low blow'.
All in all on my scorecard it was as follows.
1. hop 10,8
2. hop
3. hop
4. calz
5. calz
6. calz
7. draw
8. calz
9. hop
10. calz
11. calz
12. calz
Giving the overall decission to calzaghe by 115, 113
The judges decissions were all over the place, only 1 got it right i thought, 115, 113 to calzaghe.
Dont know how the others gave it 114,113 bhop and 116,11 calzaghe.
In summary calzaghe showed his champ ability to work out hopkins (something very very difficult to do), he went down in first round from some great boxing by bernard but claz forced his way back into the fight by workrate and managing to plant the most punches on bhop that anyone has ever done before.
Of course there will be doubters but any legitimate boxing fan knows that calzaghe is the real deal, he got knocked down in the first only to come back and start dicatating against the great hopkins.
Respect to both fighters, but the champ won on the day. It was in the later rounds where i knew bhop was gone because calzaghe rocked him with a good combo, i thought bhop was gonna go down if joe hit him a few more times, probably stay down, but bhop managed to clinch (suprise suprise lol)...it was clear that whilst his philly style and defense/counter was top class, joe started dicatating the fight and adaopted later on to bring his game in, hopkins trid every dirty trick but calzaghe was just too good for him.
Calzaghe to fight jones next and beat him (either in millenium stadium, madison square or vegas), then in his final fight beat pavlik (in vegas) and then retire totally unbeaten 47, 0 A true cut above the rest:)

Sorry dude it doesn't work like that. Even if you hit someone hard and almost ko them like in this fight it doesn't matter. You have to land the KO to win. Otherwise like in this fight the guy who lands more clean punches wins.[/quote]
ok one guy hits 100 clean punches the other guy hits 2 punches and on knocks him out who wins? those 100 clean punch are worth what? ok very exaggerated but this is my point

There's no way Joe lost that fight. After the early rounds,Joe took over. B Hop was being backed up,against the ropes, against hiswill. Joe threw more, landed more and was the agressor.B Hop's game plan was to stay in the middle of the ring, when he did that,he did well. He stopped doing that, stopped throwing punches and lost.Period. And I thought B Hop going down from the phnatom low blow was a joke lol!

Well said. If it was a 4 rounder then, yes, BHop took it hands down. But it was over 12 and Joe adjusted well. Any lesser fighter could have crumbled after a start like that. I really dont get any of this nonsense talking about robberies here. Calzaghe came on as a champion should.

It was a close, sloppy fight on both sides, but I thought Joe won. Bernard did well for the first half, but his "clean, effective" punches were fewer and more far between as the fight went on. Frankly, I thought Bernard deserved to lose just for that phantom low blow BS. Way to act like a true champion Bernard. Somebody criticized Kellerman for taking him to task for that, but I think somebody had to do it. Why do people think that these dirty fighters shouldn't be held accountable for that crap?

Well said bro, that crap was disgraceful in my view, the shot was nowhere near the place down there where it really hurt, but i think Joe let his frustration with his shenanigans there too. Neither came out of that incident particularly well, but I agree that the question had to be asked.

Yup. If anything, Bernard should have given Joe a kiss after that "low blow" seeing as it was more like a tickle than a punch. I'll bet the Nard was secretly aroused. :o
After just watching the replay, I have to say that neither guy impressed me that much. I thought Joe barely squeaked out the W but he looked pretty bad doing it. He could have let his hands go a lot more to win decisively but he seemed a bit gunshy. Bernard was Bernard, he did what he does. As it is, I wouldn't call it a robbery, but I think a draw wouldn't have been inconceivable either.

Re: Calzaghe - Hopkins Predictions, RD by RD, Results FREE FOR ALL CHAT
I had Joe winning but I just don't like the pitty pat punches. The pro's score clean EFFECTIVE punches those didn't look effective to me. That is the thing about boxing it's all perception, I can see how someone scored it for B-Hop, his punches were fewer but by far more effective. Hopkins did himself in he could have won if he threw caution to the wind. Unless Joe's punches really were hurting him, which would be deceptive because it didn't look that way to me. RJJ may be a better fight to watch because Roy is more offensive minded.
